3 Marc Leonardus Johannes was born on May 12th 1978 in Berghem, the Netherlands. After graduation at the Atheneum at the Titus Brandsma Lyceum in Oss in 1997, he moved to Amstelveen and started with his master study on Human Movement Science at the Free University in Amsterdam with specific interest on human health care and rehabilitation. During his study years, he was a student assistant in the course Revalidatie II and assisted in a study on patients with chronic lower back pain. In his spare time, he was active as a keyboard player in several cover bands, which mainly played at student parties and in bars, and he worked at the cultural centre of the Free University De Griffioen as light and sound engineer. After graduation in 2005 he was one of the staff members to organize the VU-parade, a 4-day cultural festival which was held at the university campus to celebrate the 125-year lustrum of the Free University. In the meantime he volunteered as a research assistant at the Jan van Breemen Instituut (now Reade ) in a study to wearing behavior of custommade footwear for patient with rheumatic arthritis. From 2005 to 2007, he was employed in the Lab houding en beweging, mainly doing plantar pressure measurements and patient intakes for chronic pain treatment. In 2006, he started as part-time researcher at the Slotervaart Hospital in Amsterdam to evaluate patient s satisfaction with health care among patients with a transient ischemic attack or a minor stroke. His interest for footwear and the diabetic foot developed while writing his master thesis, in which he reviewed the literature about the offloading effectiveness of rocker/roller bars and high shafts. In March 2007 he started with his PhD-project on the effectiveness of improved offloading on recurrent foot ulcer in patients with diabetes at the Academic Medical Center of the University of Amsterdam. Marc lives in Amsterdam with his wife and daughter. During the final procedures of his thesis he started with his new job as lecturer and project coordinator at the department of Health Innovations & Technology of the Fontys Paramedisch Hogeschool in Eindhoven. 174
