Low blood glucose HOW TO RECOGNIZE IT AND WHAT DO TO L ipoglicemia
What is low blood glucose? Low blood glucose, or hypoglycemia, occurs when the level of sugar in the blood is 70mg/dl or less. Low blood glucose is always manageable; you should stay calm and get treatment promptly. In some cases, if the blood glucose level is very low you may need other people to help you. ACCEPTABLE BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS IN PEOPLE WITH DIABETES: mg/dl LOW BLOOD GLUCOSE FASTING BLOOD GLUCOSE mg/dl BLOOD GLUCOSE 2 HOURS AFTER A MEAL Less than 180 mg/dl American Diabetes Association. Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes Diabetes Care 2012; 35 (supll. 1)
What causes low blood glucose? There may be different reasons for low blood glucose: DOING UNPLANNED EXERCISE or doing it for longer than usual DELAYED MEAL TIMES or insufficient meal INSULIN OR MEDICATION OVERDOSE DRINKING ALCOHOL or super alcoholic drinks
How to recognize low blood glucose PAY ATTENTION TO THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS If your blood glucose is low, you may feel WOBBLY ON YOUR LEGS, DIZZY OR NAUSEOUS NERVOUS, IRRITABLE, ANXIOUS CONFUSED, UNABLE TO CONCENTRATE HUNGRY
FAST HEART RATE PERSPIRATION AND/OR HEADACHE WEAK, TIRED NUMBNESS OR TINGLING OF THE TONGUE OR LIPS
How to correct low blood glucose 1 As soon as you feel your blood glucose may be low, check your levels with a stick, if possible. If you don t have blood glucose monitoring instruments with you and you are sure about the symptoms, you should start treatment immediately.
Follow the RULE OF 2 Eat or drink fast-acting carbohydrates (15g); you may choose between: 3 SUGAR LUMPS (5g of sugar each) 1/2 A GLASS OF FRUIT JUICE OR SUGARED DRINK (E.G. SOFT DRINK) 5-6 CANDIES (not sugar-free) 1 TABLESPOON OF SUGAR OR HONEY AMD SID, Standard italiana per la cura del diabete mellito , edizione 2009 pag American Diabetes Association. Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes Diabetes Care 2012; 35 (supl. 1)
3 If your glycaemia has not risen after 15 minutes (to above 70 mg/dl), take another 15g dose of sugar, until it rises above 100 mg/dl. AMD SID, Standard italiana per la cura del diabete mellito , edizione 2009 pag American Diabetes Association. Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes Diabetes Care 2012; 35 (supl. 1)
4 Eat other complex carbohydrates as well, to prevent your blood glucose from dropping again. For example: bread crackers breadsticks French crisp toast biscuits Do not use chocolate or diet drinks to correct low blood glucose. American Diabetes Association. Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes Diabetes Care 2012; 35 (supl. 1)
What if I have seriously low blood glucose? In some cases, the blood glucose may drop to a dangerously low level, which in particularly serious cases may lead to LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS or SEIZURES. If you have these symptoms, you should not be left alone and you should receive immediate care. It is useful to have an ID card with you, so that people around you can give you proper help.
Remember: sugared drinks should only be administered when the person is conscious and alert; if you are unconscious, you should not be given anything to eat or drink, as liquids or solids may go down your airways and cause suffocation. In these cases, call 118. In case of loss of consciousness, you can be given an intramuscular injection of glucagon, if immediately available. Before you drive, think about your possible low blood glucose. Monitor your blood glucose levels, and stop for a check if you don t feel well.
