1 NUTR Therapeutic Nutrition Practicum C O U R S E I N F O R M A T I O N Course Title: Therapeutic Nutrition Practicum Code: NUTR 407. Hours: Lec 0 Hrs. Lab-12Hr. Cln 0Hr. Cr.Hr. 4. Prerequisite: NUTR 308. Level/Semester : 4 th level - Fall. Department offering the course: Nutrition and Dietetics Faculty of Health sciences. C O U R S E D E S C R I P T I O N This course involves several sessions whereby the students will solve theoretical case studies for specific disease conditions. Each case study will provide the needed basic assessment data and laboratory values needed to apply the nutrition care process. The student will also develop a nutrition counseling plan aiming at modifying the dietary and life style habits to promote disease prevention and healthy living. C O U R S E A I M This course builds the skills in medical nutrition therapy of different diseases through exposing the students to various theoretical cases. This will be achieved through solving several cases. These cases involve diabetes mellitus, renal diseases, cardiovascular diseases, pregnancy, breastfeeding, gastrointestinal diseases, hepatic diseases, pancreatic diseases, critical illness... under close supervision of the instructor of the course. I N T E N D E D L E A R N I N G O U T C O M E S O F T H E C O U R S E ( I L O s ) In the end of the course, the student will be able to: Professional and Practical Skills P.1- Analyze and interpret the nutrition assessment data to develop a nutrition diagnosis in real presented cases. P.2- Formulate a nutrition diagnosis based on assessment data. P.3- Develop the goals and objectives of the management plan

2 P.4- Practice to calculate energy needs and divide it between protein, carbohydrate and fat according to each case. P.5- Prepare a meal plan for diverse of cases using food exchange system to develop a meal plan. P.6- Design therapeutic diets for different type of diseases based on the pathophysiological changes underlying the disease. P.7- Execute an individualised nutrition care plan for proposed case studies at work place. General and Transferable Skills G.1- Assemble information from a variety of sources[ library, electronic, and online resources] G.2- Practice verbalcommunication skills G.3- Use effectively the Microsoft office package, professional nutritional databases, electronic library and IT resources in studying and preparing course activities. G.4- Participate effectively in group discussions (Different opinions). G.5- Use self learning techniques C O U R S E O U T L I N E Week Number 1: Introduction, nutritional care process applications, how to explore the patient history, exchange list, case study ( weight loss) Exchange list: meals content, calories counting, pregnancy case study Week Number 2: Documentation of nutritional care, Modified diets, Metabolic stress Estimation of physical activity, estimation of nutrient needs, breast feeding case study. Week Number 3: Metabolic stress, burn injury case study, fracture injury case study, Enteral & parenteral nutrition, case study. Peptic Ulcer case study, diet low in uric acid. Calculation of saturated, monounsaturated & polyunsaturated fat in meals. Week Number 4: Ulcer diet, diet low in uric acid Renal failure, case study. Gout, Diet low in uric acid Enteral and parenteral case study

3 Week Number 5: Diabetes type 2 case study(without insulin), carbohydrates counting, cases study, diabetes type 1 case study Complex case study: Renal failure +diabetes+ hypercholesterolemia + hypertriglyceridemia Weight management Carb counting, Type I diabetes Infectious diarrhoea Week Number 6: Cancer cases Type II diabetes +hypertension + Myocardial infarction Adolescent with eating disorders. Week Number 7: 7 th week evaluation/assessment, Cystic fibrosis Dyslipedemia, stroke, acute renal failure Calorie counting Weight management Week Number 8: Acute hepatitis Acute renal failure Chronic renal failure GERD Week Number 9: Liver cirrhosis, Acute & chronic pancreatitis Nutrition support+ cancer Elderly case study Week Number 10: Diabetes mellitus complicated with nephropathy case study Gestational diabetes, case study, childhood under nutrition Week Number 11: Week Number 12: Cardiovascular disease, case study, metabolic syndrome Hypertension, case study Heart failure case study Renal failure case study + renal failure or dialysis Adolescence obesity, case study Week Number 13: 12 th week evaluation/assessment Obesity, gastric bypass case studies Dysphagia diets + case studies on different types of dysphagia Elderly case with multiple nutritional deficiencies. Week Number 14: Cancer, esophageal cancer case study, Cancer colon case study with nutrition support Respiratory stress Acute hepatitis case study Week Number 15: Respiratory stress cases, Acute Pancreatitis with nutritional support case study End stage Liver disease case study
