4 The Diabetes Coalition of Mississippi partnered with the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the MS State Department of Health to host the 4th Annual Giving Diabetes the Blues Conference on November 3rd and 4th. The Conference was held at UMMC s Conference Center in Jackson, MS. Updates were given on reimbursement for diabetes programs, MSDH efforts, and Diabetes Coalition work stream efforts. Novo Nordisk sponsored the keynote speaker: Jay Hewitt, Type 1 Diabetic and Ironman Triathlon winner. 5 DIABETES AND HEART DISEASE SUMMIT The City of Natchez s Diabetes & Heart Disease Summit held on November 16, 2016 at the Natchez Convention Center was a partnered event with Humana, Novo Nordisk, the Diabetes Coalition of MS, Ornish Lifestyle Medicine, Healthways, and local YMCAs. This was a networking and educational meeting that brought together public health professionals from Mississippi and Louisiana who are vested in reducing diabetes and cardiovascular disease rates. Presentations were given on how to reduce rates of diabetes through the implementation of the following evidence based programs: the Diabetes Self-Management Education Program, the National Diabetes Prevention Program, and the Dr. Ornish s Program for Reversing Heart Disease. 6 Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP) Expanded Model Resource: CMS.org The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), on July 7, 2016, proposed to expand the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP) starting January 1, On November 4, 2016, CMS released the final rule in the 2017 Physician Fee Schedule. The Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP) final rule finalizes aspects of the expansion that will enable organizations, including those new to Medicare, to prepare for enrollment into Medicare as MDPP suppliers. Finalized policies include the definition of the MDPP benefit, beneficiary eligibility criteria, and supplier eligibility and enrollment criteria. Future rule making will address policies related to payment, virtual providers, and other program integrity safeguards. This is the first time a preventive service model from the CMS Innovation Center has been expanded.

8 EDUCATION RECOGNITION PROGRAM (ERP)SYMPOSIUM FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Baton Rouge, LA The Education Recognition Program (ERP) Diabetes Self-Management Education/Support (DSME/S) Recognition Symposium is an accredited healthcare provider continuing education program that will award physicians, physician assistants, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists and certified diabetes educators that attend 7.25 CMEs. The program s ultimate goal is to increase patient access to quality, evidence based, and sustainable DSME/S programs. The one day program will guide attendees through how to establish and maintain a DSME/S program that adheres to the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support. The program is designed for a dult learners. It is task oriented, and interactive and promotes networking and best practice sharing. Registration for this program will be available soon. SENIOR SERIES BOOTCAMP The American Diabetes Association has plans to work with CVS Pharmacy in implementing a Senior Series bootcamp workshop. The one time 3-hour workshop would cover topics focusing on nutrition, physical activity and medications. We are looking both for participating seniors along the gulf coast, as well as, CDEs or community health workers helping to assist with implementation. A stipend will be included. NATIONAL GET FIT DON T SIT DAY WEDNESDAY, MAY 3 National Get Fit Don t Sit Day is an opportunity for the Association to increase awareness of the importance of getting up and moving throughout the day especially at work. Another e-toolkit will be available for this national awareness day which provides a wealth of scalable ideas, tips and activities to inspire you and your colleagues to get moving for better health. 9 TUESDAY, MARCH 28 Alert Day is the Association s one-day wake-up call engaging the public to find out their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by taking the Association s 7-question Risk Assessment test. Free toolkits with information on how to disseminate specialized messaging around this day in all settings (corporate, organization, faithbased groups, etc.) and will be available on www. diabetes.org/alertday.
