NO CHILD SHOULD DIE OF DIABETES
THE PROBLEM There is an estimated 1 million youth under the age of 25 with diabetes in the world. In high income countries, children with diabetes have full access to the care required to lead healthy and productive lives. By contrast, in low resource countries, insulin and other essential aspects of care may be unaffordable or even unavailable. In these countries, many children and adolescents with diabetes die very quickly. Others struggle to survive with insufficient access to insulin, monitoring supplies and trained diabetes healthcare providers. Unable to control their blood glucose, they develop serious complications early in life, such as eye damage and kidney failure. In order to live a healthy and fulfilling life, a child with diabetes requires: Insulin injections 2-4 times per day Frequent monitoring of their blood glucose Practical, tailored diabetes education Expert medical care Approximately ,000 children and youth with diabetes are in desperate need of support. Since 2000, the IDF Life for a Child programme (LFAC) has been supporting the provision of the best possible healthcare, given local circumstances, to all young people with diabetes in developing countries, through the strengthening of paediatric services in these countries.
HOW LFAC OPERATES The IDF Life for a Child programme supports diabetes services caring for children and youth in developing countries, up to the age of 26. LFAC started in three countries in the Western Pacific. Fifteen years later, it has expanded considerably and is currently helping over 17,000 children in 46 countries worldwide. Main areas of support include: Insulin Syringes Blood glucose monitoring equipment HbA1c testing Diabetes education materials Health professional training Treatment guidelines Clinical research Vocational training Mentoring Research Infrastructure and capacity building.
LFAC commenced support in the Republic of Congo in Two diabetes centres provide extensive patient and family education to more than 100 children. In the past two years, the number of children and youth are steadily growing as mortality lessens. In Ecuador, LFAC together with the in-country implementing partner FUVIDA, Fundación Aprendiendo a Vivir con Diabetes, provides quality care and education for an increasing number of children in and around Guayaquil, the country s most populated city, whose families cannot afford care.
Chantelle (right) is 25. She lives in an isolated village on top of a hillside in one of the rural districts of Rwanda; five hours walk from the nearest health centre. She has had diabetes for 8 years. She and her mother get by through the skills she learnt at vocational school making scones in a simple oven, and growing vegetables. In 2002, LFAC commenced its support in Nagpur, a region in Central India. In close collaboration with The Dream Trust, LFAC currently helps 45 children and adolescents with diabetes living in impoverished circumstances. This young girl received a bicycle thorugh the Dream Trust to enable her to get to school.

HOW YOU CAN HELP You can support the IDF Life for a Child Programme s continuous efforts to give hope and a future to children and youth with diabetes in the developing world by making a one-off or recurring donation to LFAC. With US$1 a day you can provide full care for a child with diabetes. Larger contributions could cover full care for all children with diabetes in a specific country or a component of care (eg, insulin).
