10 Telomere shortening Telomeres are sequences of nucleic acids extending from the ends of chromosomes. Every time the cell divides, telomeres are shortened, leading to cellular damage and death. Telomerase is an enzyme that can repair and replace telomeres, found only in germ cells and cancer cells.
