1 Basal Rate Testing: Your provider has recommended that you complete one or more basal rate tests. These worksheets will help you in testing your pump settings and making small changes to make sure your blood sugars remain as close to your normal range as possible. Meeting the goals in this worksheet takes a bit of effort, so plan on several days of strict blood sugar testing and meal times. In order to test your basal rates, follow the steps in these worksheets. The goal is for your blood sugar to stay within 30 mg/dl of your blood sugar range over the period of each test. Be patient with the process, it may take a few days to determine the basal rates that are right for you. To test your basal rates it will be important that you keep the same schedule on the days you are testing. Do not do basal rate testing if you: Cannot calculate the correct bolus insulin for what you are eating. Try not to eat high fat foods, as these foods may cause higher blood sugars later than other foods, making it hard to calculate the correct bolus. Are going to participate in strenuous exercise, unless it is exercise that you do every day. Have an illness or infection. Please bring the results with you to your next office visit. If you are confident, feel free to make these basal rate changes before your next visit. Basal rates should be checked at least a couple of times per year, and more often when your blood sugars seem to be unstable. While we will not go into specifics here, you may need to set and verify different basal rates depending on what shift you are working, whether you exercise or not, and the phase of the menstrual cycle, for women. Most of you will want to take one test at a time. However, if you can go without eating two meals in a row, you can do two steps of the basal checks together. For example, you can merge the overnight and morning basal rate checks and not eat your bedtime snack or breakfast.

Overnight 1 (usually 2-3 AM: ) Repeat test again tomorrow night with Overnight 2 (time _) Repeat test again tomorrow night with Overnight 3 (time _) Repeat test again tomorrow night with Before Breakfast (Eat breakfast!) Check your blood sugar, you are finished with basal rate testing. Eat and take breakfast bolus and any necessary correction bolus. Contact your
