4 SAFEty I n t r a v e n o u s s a f e t y s y s t e m s Medicina manually retractable safety syringes The Medicina manually retractable syringe has been developed to help the healthcare sector adhere to the EU directive (2010/32/EU) on Prevention of Sharps Injuries. The needle is manually retracted into the barrel after use, protecting the end user from needle stick injuries. An estimated 61% of needle stick injuries occur after use and before disposal 1 The Medicina manually retractable safety syringe is available in a range of barrel sizes and can be used with filter or blunt needles. These can be removed after use and a hypodermic needle affixed for the administration of the fluid. Once the fluid has been administered, the plunger is depressed until a click is heard. The plunger is then pulled back, bringing the contaminated needle back into the barrel, until another click is heard. The plunger can then be snapped off preventing re-use of the needle. provides an alternative which requires little change in practices currently followed by health care workers. For patients who need intramuscular injections with longer needles we have introduced a 5ml syringe which has a longer barrel. The longer barrel will allow a 2 needle to be disposed of safely. The needle automatically retracts after use and reduces the risk of needle stick injury. The Medicina automatically retractable safety syringe is available in a range of barrel and needle gauge sizes. The syringe comes with a fixed needle and can be used in a variety of procedures such as intramuscular and subcutaneous administration of fluids. The fluid is drawn up and the injection is then carried out. After all the fluid has been administered, the plunger hits the bottom of the barrel and a click is heard. The needle then automatically retracts back into the plunger. The risk of needle stick is therefore reduced as the contaminated needle is no longer accessible. The needle and syringe are then discarded into any sharps container. The Medicina automatically retractable safety syringe is a safe alternative that adheres to the EU directive on Prevention of Sharps Injuries. We have also introduced two specialist Insulin syringes which have 30G 6mm needles. These are a 1ml syringe for up to 100 Units and a 0.5ml syringe for smaller quantities.

6 SAFEty I n t r a v e n o u s s a f e t y s y s t e m s Medicina Luer slip IV syringes Medicina has manufactured a complete range of Luer slip IV syringes that can be used with any standard, filtered or safety needle. The overall aim is to reduce the cost to the healthcare sector whilst improving patient safety. The Luer slip syringe is available in a range of barrel sizes: 1ml 3ml 5ml 10ml 20ml 30ml 60ml Sizes 10ml through to and including 60ml have an eccentric tip. This gives the end user a clear view of the entry site and allows the site to be entered at the correct angle. The flat plunger fits flush against the flat shoulder of the barrel, eliminating dead space to ensure accurate measurements are delivered to the patient. Medicina have printed the wording IV Syringe onto the barrel of each size of syringe, making the use of this product clear, therefore avoiding any confusion and improving patient safety. 7 I n t r a v e n o u s s a f e t y s y s t e m s SAFEty Medicina Luer lock IV syringes Medicina has developed a range of Luer lock IV syringes for use with IV extension sets, standard or safety needles and IV cannula. They are designed to be used on the most common types of syringe drivers. The clear print on the barrel of the Medicina Luer lock IV syringe ensures accuracy when drawing up fluid. The syringe is clearly labelled as an IV syringe, making it s use clear and avoiding any confusion. The Luer lock syringe is available in a range of barrel sizes: 1ml 3ml 5ml 10ml 20ml 30ml 60ml The Medicina syringe also eliminates dead space as the cone shaped plunger fits flush against the shoulder of the barrel of the syringe. This further ensures that the patient receives the correct amount of fluid. The Medicina Luer lock syringes have been designed to be used with the most common brand of IV syringe drivers. Medicina also offer a 60ml Luer lock insulin syringe. The red print on the barrel clearly displays that the syringe is FOR INSULIN ONLY. This is aimed to improve patient safety.

These needles have been designed to help with the drawing up of fluids that will be given to the patient intravenously, intramuscularly or subcutaneously. The use of blunt fill or filtered needles will improve safety to healthcare professionals and patients The use of a blunt fill or blunt fill needle with filter will improve the safety of healthcare professionals and patients by reducing the risk of needle stick injuries. Both types of Medicina blunt fill needles are available via all purchasing routes at competitive prices.

9 I n t r a v e n o u s s a f e t y s y s t e m s SAFEty Medicina disposable tourniquets The Medicina single use, latex free, quick release tourniquets are a simple and safe product for any healthcare professional to use for venepuncture or cannulation. Simply apply the tourniquet still allowing room for index finger and middle finger to fit between the tourniquet and the patient s skin. When the procedure is complete, the single handed release allows pressure to be applied to the venepuncture site as required. The tourniquet can then be removed and disposed of in the clinical waste according to local procedures. There are two sizes available, an adult size and a smaller tourniquet with more adjustment holes for paediatric use. A single use tourniquet will reduce the risk of cross infection.
