The ojective of this experiment ws to investigte the influence of dietry supplementtion of ProGlucn on growth performnce, dirrhe score, nd gut permeility of wened pigs experimentlly infected with pthogenic F-8 E. coli. Wened pigs (n = 36, 7.69 ±.77 kg BW) were individully housed in disese continment rooms nd rndomly llotted to one of three dietry tretments with 2 replicte pigs in ech tretment. The three diets were nursery sl diet (control), nd 2 dditionl diets contining either or 2 mg/kg of ProGlucn in the sl diet. The experiment lsted 7 d [5 d efore nd 2 d fter the first inocultion (d )]. The inoculum used in this experiment ws F-8 E. coli, contining LT, ST, nd SLT-2 toxins. The inocultion doses were cfu/3 ml orl dose dily for 3 dys. The growth performnce ws mesured on d to 5, 5 to 2, nd to 2 post-inocultion (PI). Dirrhe score (DS;, norml, to 5, wtery dirrhe) ws recorded for ech pig dily. Frequency of dirrhe ws the percentge of pig dys with DS of 4 or higher. Rectl temperture ws mesured for ech pig dily fter first inocultion. On d 5 nd d 2, jejunum were collected from 4 pigs in the control group nd high dose ProGlucn group for trnscellulr nd prcellulr permeility nlysis. All dt were nlyzed y ANOVA using the PROC MIXED of SAS with pig s the experimentl unit. The Chi-squre test ws used for the frequency of dirrhe nlysis. No differences were oserved in growth rte nd feed intke of E. coli-chllenged pigs throughout the experiment. Pigs fed mg/kg ProGlucn hd lower (P <.5) rectl temperture compred with pigs fed the control diet on d 5 nd 7 PI. Inclusion of 2 mg/kg ProGlucn reduced (P <.5) frequency of dirrhe (9.26 vs. 7.9%) for the entire experimentl period nd decresed (P <.5) trnscellulr permeility on d 2 PI compred with the control diet. In conclusion, supplementtion of ProGlucn my enhnce disese resistnce of wened pigs, s indicted y reducing frequency of dirrhe nd gut permeility.
