2 UNDERSTANDING BLOOD SUGAR AND INSULIN Blood sugar is our main source of energy. It comes from the foods we eat, so some people have different levels of blood sugar in their bodies than others. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body change blood sugar into energy. This process of insulin turning blood sugar into energy is called metabolism. An increase in blood sugar can occur when your body does not respond properly to insulin. People with type 2 diabetes have blood sugar levels that rise higher than normal. High blood sugar can cause complications. How do I know if I have type 2 diabetes? Your doctor may measure your blood sugar levels in different ways to determine if you have type 2 diabetes: Blood sugar: A blood test will tell your doctor the amount of sugar in your blood A 1C: Measurement of average blood sugar level over a 3 month period. This tells your doctor how well blood sugar levels are being managed during that time period Over time, high blood sugar levels can contribute to complications such as high blood pressure, blood vessel and nerve damage, heart disease, and stroke. What can you expect when diagnosed with type 2 diabetes? When you re diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, your doctor will recommend a plan for you to get control of your blood sugar levels. This might include: A healthy diet and exercise Medication to treat your diabetes Goals for your A1C blood sugar levels If blood sugar goals are not reached, your doctor may add on one or more medications to help get your blood sugar under control. CYCLOSET is a once-a-day dose CYCLOSET (SY-klo-set) is a once-daily prescription medicine that may help lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes, when used with a healthy diet and exercise. It can also help you reach the goals your doctor outlined. You should take CYCLOSET only in the morning, within 2 hours of waking up. It s best to take CYCLOSET with food.
