Pg Photocpies of the chapter should be available on the unit. The book is also available for families from the Family Resource Library. 2. Adjunct resources, as required: (Indicate further required, referrals, notes on chart) - Appropriate medication pamphlets: List Below: - Antiepileptic Medications: Information for Parents (3A Handout & 3A web page) - Brain Injury Resource Box: List items Below: C. If the child has been diagnosed with epilepsy: 1. In preparation for discharge, the RN will compile the package entitled, Epilepsy Education for Families according to the following guidelines:

4 Page 4 All children who have been admitted to the unit with seizures will receive as per outlined. Any additional, as Appropriate Drug Information Pamphlets: - As per physician s discharge orders for medication. 2. The RN will review each of the sections of the Epilepsy Education Package with the family and address any questions they may have. The sections include: - First Aid for Seizures - Seizure Safety - Emotional and Psychosocial Issues - About your Child s Medications - Glossary of Terms 3. The RN will review relevant sections of the pamphlets included in the Education Package and address any questions they may have. (Indicate further required, referrals, notes on chart) 4. Adjunct Resources Available for Families: - Just Like you and me video (Available from the Family Resource Library) - Recognizing the signs of Childhood Seizures pamphlet - Epilepsy and the School Age Child handout - Thoughts on Parenting the Child with Epilepsy handout -

5 Page 5 receive as per outlined. Any additional, as Medical Follow-up: The child will require a follow-up appointment in the neurology clinic. The RN or unit clerk is to call local 2121 and notify the secretary of the need for a followup appointment. The secretary will coordinate with the appropriate physician and call the family with the appointment time within two weeks of discharge. If the family has not heard from the clinic within two weeks of discharge, they should be instructed to call the clinic. Medication : If the child is discharged on anticonvulsant medications: -Utilize all appropriate medication pamphlets. Review all sections with the family. -Record the names and dosages of all of the medications on the discharge sheet. Comments & Concerns (Indicate further required, -Record the last dose of all the medications were given and they are next due. -If on a medication titration schedule, complete a medication calendar. Review with the unit pharmacist, if available. Keep the original copy in the chart, provide a copy to the family, and send one copy to the Neurology Clinic. -If Rectal Valium, Rectal Paraldehyde or SL Ativan is required, please refer to the appropriate on-line Patient Flowsheets (Nursing web-site) and medication pamphlets (On-line from the Family Resource Library). Clarify if a test dose is required prior to discharge.
