2 Stress is part of life Stressors Are Everywhere ú Serious Illness ú Illness or Death of a Loved One ú Divorce ú Job Loss ú Many many others

3 Stress is everywhere Daily Stressors: ú Traffic ú Long Commutes ú Packed Schedules ú Work and Family Responsibilities ú Required Clinic Appointments ú Inability to Drive!!

4 Stress s effect on Epilepsy Ø Stress is one of the most commonly reported seizure triggers Ø Worry or fear activates the limbic system Ø Even happy stress can be a trigger Ø Stress can cause hormonal changes that can trigger seizures Ø Stress may cause missed medication Ø Stress may interfere with sleep

5 How does the body respond to stress? Stress is a normal psychological and physical reaction to the demands of life Fight or- flight response Your body is hard- wired to react in a way originally meant to protect you against perceived threats from predators and aggressors

6 How does the body respond to stress? The body's stress- response system is usually self- regulating. It enables your body to return to normal, baseline, once a perceived threat has passed Your heart rate and blood pressure return to baseline levels, and other systems resume their regular activities

7 The Body s Response, cont. When the stressors of your life are always present, it is easy to feel constantly stressed, tense, nervous or on edge The long- term activation of the stress response system puts you at increased risk of numerous health problems Anxiety Depression Seizures Other general health problems

8 Stress does not have to ruin your life. Change the Stressor Avoid Stressors Learn to say NO Change your environment Turn off the news Communicate needs and limits Manage your time: Prioritize the TO DO List

9 Take charge of your stress Change Yourself Avoid Catastrophizing Learn from Your Mistakes Reframe the Situation Look at the Big Picture Use Humor Stop Trying to Control the Uncontrollable

10 Be proactive in reducing stress and improving overall health. Slow down everything does not have to be done in one day Live in this moment stop and smell the flowers, look for the good things in life. Seizures on four days this month that means at least 26 days seizure free! Practicing Embodied Breathing

11 Alternative/other therapies coping with epilepsy Herbal therapy not everything natural is good for you. ú Colonics can be dangerous ú Some herbs react negatively with your seizure medication

12 Alternative/other therapies coping with epilepsy Diet therapy healthy eating has many positive effects: ú Ketogenic or modified Atkins diet ú Avoidance of caffeine ú Healthy weight improves self esteem

13 Other Therapies for coping with epilepsy Relaxation techniques ú Massage ú Acupuncture / acupressure ú Exercise - yoga, tai chi, walks, exercise reasonably ú Rest regular sleep habits ú Hobbies do something you enjoy

14 Acceptance & Commitment Therapy [ACT] Acceptance of the things about having epilepsy that cannot be changed You have epilepsy, you are not an epileptic it is not who you are. You are a unique individual with all of the experiences of others plus you may have seizures

15 Acceptance & Commitment Therapy [ACT], cont. Stay connected with the present. Don t spend time or energy focusing on the past or fearing the future. Let go of the struggle with your seizures and start creating the life you want. Focus on values and be in the present moment, while recognizing the possibility that seizures could occur.

16 Side effects that can effect you re here and now. Problems with cognition ú Slowing of thought processing. ú Issues with short term memory Fatigue sometimes even when you are getting enough sleep you feel exhausted. ú Your doctor might want you checked for sleep apnea ú You may simply need your medication adjusted

17 Related conditions Headache ú Muscle Tension ú Migraine ú Medication related ú Consistent use of over- the- counter pain relievers

18 Related conditions Muscle Ache ú Seizures often create sore achy muscles generally related to the seizure activity but sometimes the ache is secondary to a fall

19 Other issues to consider Insomnia Working conditions ú Avoid working around heavy moving machinery ú Avoid working at unprotected heights Driving No driving following a seizure Tennessee 6 months Kentucky 3 months

20 More considerations Bodies of water: ú If taking tub bath use minimal water ú Shower best if someone knows you are showering Open flames/hot items ú Potential for burns when times of altered consciousness

21 It is your life! You have seizures but you also have choices Take control of the things you can don t fight those you cannot. Learn from your experiences ú Things that work well repeat if appropriate ú Things that did not work avoid in the future. You are not alone!
