2 Functional Movement skills FMS represent locomotion, manipulation, and stabilization skills. Functional movement skills are the fundamental building blocks that allow for more complex and sports specific movement patterns. Also proven to have positive effects on lifestyles. Those with good FMS have more active lifestyles.
3 Dodgy Foundations??
4 FMS training should involve: Fun-based activities, Challenges competition personal achievement A motivational climate
5 Warm Up Ask Children to create pathways Involve joint mobilizers and stretches Increasing speed from walk to run Involve changes of direction Correct stopping techniques and turning techniques. Introduce bean bags for hurling specific Works on agility, coordination and strength.
6 Warm UP With use of hurls create hurdles include jumping e.g. grand national game Looking at landing techniques so begin with static jumps Landings should be soft with bend in knees e.g. emphasise need for kids to touch ground in front of them. Look for movement at knees. Prevent valgus knee action.
7 Purpose of a warm up Elevate heart rate Increase blood supply to the working muscles Increase muscle temperature Improve muscle and tendon elasticity Injury prevention
8 Speed Development Window of opportunity for speed development. Girls aged 6-8, boys aged 7-9. Development and activation of fast twitch muscle fibres. Running technique. Warm up games and skill development should involve speed development.
9 Players will be asked to: Advance through ladders with high knees, one foot in each rung. Jump through each rung, then every 2, or forward 2 and back one. Use of the arms to accelerate important Bound to the side of the ladders, on floor Complete different variations going sidewards through the ladders Each time players will continue motion after the ladders until they reach the cone.

12 Speed Development With or Without ladders Running w/high knees and arm movement. Jumping and hopping Looking out for: Correct technique Landing mechanics Ensure explosiveness is coming from the glutes.
13 Theme: Dribbling sheilding the sloitar Warm Up: Agility, Balance and Jumping Players in groups of 3 must come up with a sequence that has: Running Jumping Balance Each member of group must contribute idea. Midnight Select 3 taggers to be foxes, who move about hall on all fours, chasing sheep When sheep are caught, they turn into fox Last 3players to be caught will be chasers in next game Game 1: Dribble and steal Each child begins with a ball. As the game develops the coach gradually takes balls from the children. Those children who have no ball become stealers. Coach continues to withdraw balls to half the children have balls and half have not. Points awarded for each ball that is stolen. If your ball is stolen child with no ball then becomes a stealer while child with ball joins the dribbling team. Co-ordination Marching through ladders/ cones Begin one foot in each space Progress bunny hops trough ladder Mobilise: Mobilise: Arms, Trunk and Knees
14 Skill Development Game 2 KEY POINTS: Head Eyes on ball, with an awareness of other around you Hands Begin in ready position Place boss of hurl on the ground, thus ensuring a low centre of gravity. Feet Shoulder width apart, bend at knees and hips. Have front foot in line with ball Transfer weight from the side you are striking from e.g. striking from left, transfer weight from left foot to right foot 1v1 steal and dribble Children will get into partners. With their partner one child will act as the stealer while the other will dribble the ball. Child who steals the ball gets 1point and tries to maintain possession of the ball while their partner then becomes the stealer. 1v1 Steal, Dribble and Shoot As above children work with a partner who is trying to steal the ball from them. Child must hold possession of the ball for a time of 10sec before striking the ball against the wall for a goal NB If a player is experiencing difficulty use a shorter grip i.e. grip further up the hurl
15 Theme: Striking- responsibilities of the batter/fielder WARM UP: Spatial Awareness: Can you show me how to move through different levels at different speeds? How many speeds can you run at? Agility: Big Ball Bombardment 2 teams facing each other, leave a zone in the middle with a large ball. Players must kick their smaller ball at the larger ball trying to knock the ball into the other half. Bridges & Rivers Pair off, 1 child is a bridge, other is a river Rivers must go under all the bridges. Jumping: Partner Catch with Ball Partner holds ball up high to the side while partner runs and jumps to take ball. Mobilise all major joint(s) after each warm up activity Game 1: Keep the kettle boiled With a partner children will alternatively strike the sloitar off the wall. Points are awarded if child takes more that two touches with the hurl to return the ball against the wall. Children should be encouraged to use both sides when striking. Allow children finding it difficult to take more that the two touches and those better to take less. Goals can be placed at the wall also to increase the difficulty.
16 Skill Development Dribbling: Rob ball everyone has ball, 1 catcher must dispossess, when caught players must act as catcher until there is a winner. 1vs1 must try to keep ball off partner Looking for low hips stamina development ability to hold off opponent.
17 Skill Development Striking: 1 against wall dominant side then introduce non dominant side. 1 w/ 1 rolling the ball to either side and partner must readjust feet and body to strike back. Keep the kettle boiling 1 w/ 1 Goal Ball 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2.
18 Skill Development Game 2 KEY POINTS: HEAD: Eyes on the ball Head down when striking through the ball HANDS: Dominant hand grips the top of the hurl Other hand slides directly underneath dominant hand FEET: When striking from the left side, right foot should be in front Feet shoulder width apart Front foot should be pointed the way you want to send the ball to Skill Development: Children can begin by themselves striking the sloitar against the wall. Practicing off both sides 1w1 Children work with a partner rolling the sloitar on the ground. Children are encouraged to get their footwork correct upon striking. 1v1(gate goals) Children can then complete against their partner to score through each others goals. Encourage children to dribble right/left for four steps before striking to development movement and striking of both sides. 2v2 Match - Finish with a conditioned match. Introduce 2 touches only, to encourage striking. LEARNING OUTCOMES: To develop the striking technique using your hurl, Children should now be able to make decisions when required, in a field situation.

22 Strength Strength Squatting: Get children to squat down and Collect as many cones as possible Coaching Points: Straight line from head to hips Knees over feet and facing same direction as toes. Animal Walk: Get children to mimic the Movements of animals, moving on all 4 s, then 3 s develop it to see can they move while keeping their chest close to the ground. If back begins to arch to much get them to stop. Tug of war: using a rope/hurl Children try to pull each other From the mat to win a point Coaching points: Encourage children to have a wide stance and a low centre of gravity
