1 INACTIVITY PANDEMIC SUMMARY SPORTS & FITNESS INDUSTRY TRADE EDITION An Analysis Of Physical Activity Trends
2 Highlights Inactivity Pandemic September 2017 SPORTS & FITNESS INDUSTRY TRADE EDITION Here are the Big Stories from our Inactivity Pandemic Report Kids inactivity trends are a big problem See the negative overall trends (pages 4-7) and how kids are becoming more and more inactive. In fact, USA kids are ranked 47 th out of 50 countries in children s fitness. The sports & fitness industry must change these trends it is the present & future of the industry. 2. Kids team sports trends have some up but play occasions are a huge concern (page 7) While we have more casual participants, we are losing core participants. Play occasions are down 19% in 5 years. Leaders in team sports must find ways to convert casual participants into core participants & make experiences more fun and engaging for kids & adults. 3. The shift from core to casual participants is deadly for sales revenues (pages 9-10) Active people spend more on sports products and services than less active people. Sport & fitness participation trial programs are needed connected to great retention programs. The experiences for sports & fitness activities needs to be better, fun and engaging. 4. Americans plan to spend less on key business categories but will spend more when they get active (page 12-13) This is probably attributed to being less committed to active lifestyles but the high cost to play, compete or to be active may be getting too high. Page 13 show is pays to get people moving. Active people spend a lot more! 5. Physical education is the roots of all physical activity & gets kids active outside of school (pages 16-17) - To get more kids active, we have to go where all kids are & not just the few that want to be active. This is in schools Kids who have PE are 2-3 times more likely to be physically active outside of school. Adults who had PE when they were in school are half as likely to be inactive as adults. 6. Getting America active is a great way to increase fandom (pages 18-21) If sports leagues or governing bodies want to increase fandom, help turn around the Inactivity Pandemic. Start by getting kids more active through school-based programs. We have a whole generation of kids who are sedentary.
