6 6 Try sport New sports for Tri-cycling Boxing Boxing is now one of the most popular fitness regimes out there and if it s a lean, toned, strong body you re after then this could the sport for you. Boxing is very much a high repetition work-out so you ll see tone rather than muscle. While it s not a self-defence lesson, by the end of the first class, you should be able to throw a solid punch. If you re not particularly fit then that s not a huge problem. Boxing is actually easier for a lot of people than running, especially for those with excess weight. Judo Judo has a variety of benefits for those who participate in the sport. It improves your strength, flexibility, balance and cardiovascular fitness. It s a very challenging sport but at the same time is very accessible to people of varying sporting abilities and to those with disabilities. Naturally, the sport also improves your self defence. Most of all, Judo is lots of fun and a great way to meet lots of new people and make friends. Social running This session is perfect if you are returning to social running, or just want to try it out. There is no pressure to perform, and BUAC (Birmingham University Athletics Club) will run the session with expertise, experience and knowledge. Jogging/running has great cardio benefits and aids with weight loss, improved cardiovascular health, improved bone health, improved mood and better co-ordination. After the course, you may want to join BUAC Cool Runnings Club (only 20) where there s the opportunity to take your running further by dipping into competitive racing for the University or externally. Coaching designed to give cyclists the skills and confidence to cycle on roads. This course is appropriate for both those thinking or taking up competitive/leisure cycling and those wanting to use cycling as a mode of transport. Participants must have their own bike and helmet and already be capable of riding. Tri-swim Swim coaching for either existing triathletes wishing to improve their front crawl stroke, or anyone looking to take up the sport. Advice will also be available on other training sessions available in the bike and run disciplines of the sport, as well as novice friendly competitive opportunities. Weightlifting Weightlifting is a great activity that everyone can enjoy. Far from being solely for adding muscular size and strength, it is something that can help to control bodyfat and fitness, lead to an increase in flexibility and bone strength, help manage and prevent many injuries and health concerns, and above all is fun! Learning the basic weightlifting movement patterns will have a large carryover into everyday activities and the vast majority of sports. Korfball This is a mixed gender game (4 males and 4 females on court) and has a tactical, fast moving nature. Players are in zones, and these positions change as play progresses. This is perfect if you want to try something new and could be a great pathway into the developmental side of UBSport s Korfball Club.
