2 APPI HEALTH GROUP - EDUCATION LTD Course Overview APPI offers courses which cover the following subject areas: activities that enhance knowledge and skill in examination, evaluation, prognosis and planning, intervention, re-examination, prevention, and outcomes in physiotherapy. clinical interventions/evidence-based models, and philosophy and principles of physiotherapy. Programme design, evaluation and modification process: The programme is designed by our founder, Mr. Glenn Withers. Glenn is an award winning Physiotherapist from Australia who founded the APPI following a postgraduate scholarship from the Australia Physiotherapy Association. Today Glenn chairs the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Exercise Therapy in the UK, is a government advisor to the sector skills council on health and exercise, a published author and internationally renowned presenter. Glenn investigated the quality of teaching of Pilates in 2000, and from that developed the specific APPI Methodology that we teach today. Glenn compared the Pilates teaching principles and exercises with the relevant peer reviewed studies of the time to relate the use of Pilates to rehabilitation. Using the research of some of the worlds most renowned educators and researchers of muscle function, movement retraining and fascial anatomy, the APPI methods was evolved. The method is a step-bystep programme that teaches a client how to use Pilates based exercise to recover normal function. The programme is continually monitored by Glenn and his team of Master Trainers from around the world. APPI has 8 Master Trainers from 4 different countries that review the latest literature and movement retraining concepts on a 12 monthly basis. All programmes, manuals, lecture content and printed materials are then updated and distributed. All educators then attend update training days with Glenn and the Master Trainers to be informed of any changes, updates or changes in philosophy. Proposed Education Activities 1. Description of course content APPI s Pilates for Rehabilitation Matwork level 1 foundation course provides rehabilitation professionals with essential, fundamental knowledge to begin offering Pilates for Rehabilitation exercises to their clients recovering from back pain and other injuries. Drawing upon relevant clinical research, APPI s Matwork level 1 course provides an evidence based approach to teaching Pilates in the clinical setting. Attendees will learn a variety of beginner level movements addressing lumbopelvic and spinal stability, postural education, correct movement patterning and body awareness. This highly practical 2-day Pilates course arms attendees with the necessary skills to incorporate their new knowledge into practice as soon as they are back at work the day following the course. Completing Matwork 1 is the first step to becoming an APPI Pilates matwork instructor and precedes Matwork level 2 and Matwork level 3 in APPI s Pilates Matwork Certification Series. Designed by Australian physiotherapists for physiotherapists and equivalent degree therapists the APPI Pilates Method presents the most recent research relevant to Pilates and teaches, a realistic framework of Pilates exercises to apply in the clinical setting. The 5 Key Pilates elements of the APPI Pilates approach are taught to develop solid foundations for Pilates teaching. Recent research on spinal and pelvic stabilisation is reviewed and applied to the APPI beginner series of Pilates movements. Sixteen movements for training lumbo-pelvic, scapulothoracic and cervical stabilisation are learnt through observation, self-participation and practice teaching. Discussions of clinical application of the Pilates movements occur at the time of their teaching to provide participants with the understanding to be able to teach these exercises to patients and clients after the course. Case studies are reviewed and participants have the chance to design and discuss their own treatment plans. A guided workshop on Pilates imagery assists participants in generating the skills required for effective cueing. 4. The APPI approach Glenn & Elisa Withers The APPI curriculum is designed by Physiotherapists, specifically for those working in the field of rehabilitation, therefore pathology, normal movement patterns, neuromuscular timing and neural pathomechanics are addressed in relation to each exercise. The traditional Pilates repertoire is broken down into clearly defined levels to ensure a standard, gradual progression towards normal functional movement. Scientific evidence on segmental spinal stabilisation and on pelvic stability forms the theoretical foundation for the APPI curriculum. Methods of learning APPI courses are largely practical and interactive. The APPI recognises that individuals learn differently, therefore, its courses include practical sessions (whereby participants are experiencing, observing and practice teaching), assessment workshops (of the deep muscular system), Pilates classes (enabling individuals to enjoy the Pilates experience), case study workshops (to establish clear clinical decision making), workshops on verbal, visual and auditory cueing as well as structured lectures.
