A key parts of coaching are: 1) performer development; 2) performance improvement. So, it is important that coaches can determine the components of good performance.
Physical conditions Psychological skills Technical skills
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS (strength, speed, power, flexibility etc.)
PSYCHOLOGICAL SKILLS (emotional control, overcoming the feeling of fear, concentration, motivation, courage, selfconfidence, commitment etc.)
TECHNICAL SKILLS (in diving, the techniques of movements are directly assessed against a model of perfection!)
Technical errors Movements form Motion control Approach/ Hurdle Takeoff Flight Entry Time of effort Amount of effort Early Late Strongly Weakly
The simpler the dive, the wider the range of variability of ways of its execution. On the contrary, the more difficult the dive, the less this range. The law of the funnel for diving Spread of characteristics
Important note! There are tendency to think that coaching as monitoring, analysis and evaluation is simply about the identification of errors. This is not the case!
The coaching forms part of systematic process that provides a balance between confirming strengths and identifying errors.
Detection of errors Analysis Evaluation Feedback Final correction verdict
There is a tendency for coaches to see what they expect to see. This bias, which is often unconscious, inevitable reduces the accuracy of the coach s observation.
That is why the "new-eye effect" is so effective.
COACH FOCUS Observation, detecting errors, analysis, evaluation Posture (position and degree of tension of various parts of the body) Board/platform work (approach, hurdle) Takeoff (power, coordination, balance, control) Initiating of rotation (connection posture, movements for somersaulting and twisting rotation) Flight position (position of body segments) Flight work (head movements, repositioning in flight) Come-out (slowing and stopping rotation) Entry (body alignment, underwater movements)
POSTURE You never get a second chance to make a first impression (Will Rogers)
It's not just about the impression! Errors in posture can cause a lot of troubles in the takeoff and dive! UPPER BODY IN 4 MAIN TYPES OF POSTURES
1 Tonic neck reflex (cervical-tonic reflex) - regulates the extension / flexion of the corresponding muscle groups
BASIC STEPS FOR IMPROVING THE POSTURE 1. Stand slightly moving the gravity of the body forward. 2. Keep your heels touching and feet slightly rotated outward, knees straight. 3. Eliminate the diaphragm from the breathing process. 4. Widen your shoulders, pushing them down and back. 5. Take care of the symmetrical position of the shoulders, no twist to either side can be allowed. 6. Lift the chin, lengthening the neck. 7. Look forward on the far tip of springboard/platform, never down at your feet. 8. Pull-in the muscles in your tummy. 9. Tighten the muscles in your bottom and flatten your back. 10.Hold the arms down on each side of your body, with relaxed fingers together, elbows straight but not rigid, hands soft.
The device for training of body alignment
Error of posture The position of the head should ensure the visual focus to the far tip of the springboard or platform.
Board work. Error of approach. Throughout the approach, visual focus is the same as in posture: looking in the far tip of the springboard or platform with a slight lowering of the eyes approaching the tip.
Error of takeoff (arms movements in forward dives from springboard) Some divers, performing takeoff, moves his/her arms down too early or swings it up to the extreme upper position too late. The proper sequence and coordination: a) arms should be at the top until the beginning of the body's decline; b) it is necessary to keep arms in the lowered position about 75% of springboard way down; c) the remaining 25%, arms move up ASAP until the springboard reaches the so-called dead point or "point zero when springboard stops; d) arms should reach once again the extreme top position at the moment when the body is in the squat position before reaching point zero.
Arms should reach once again the extreme top position at the moment when the body is in the squat position before reaching point zero.
Catapult effect
The law of the "Catapult effect" The "point zero" is the only moment for the maximum effort in pushing away!
Error of takeoff (insufficient depth of the squat in back dives)
Connection technique in somersaulting dives Connection refers to the movements between the takeoff and the flight I II III IV VI
Stretch-reflex When performing movements, initiating the rotation, it is necessary to use a stretch-reflex. This reflex is expressed in the fact that the pre-stretched muscles have an optimal contractile effect. Optimal stretching leads muscle to the accumulation of elastic energy - exactly as when stretching the string in archery.
Forward twisting dives
Back twisting dives
Initiation of all twisting dives in C-position : THE LOGICAL COROLLARY AND PRACTICAL APPLICATION The correct basic somersault skills for twisting dives are: Somersault forward/inward - with a arch bend forward and the subsequent straightening Somersault back/reverse - with a arch bend back and the subsequent straightening
Role of toes The toes of the feet, leaving the surface of the springboard or tower, should be pointed. In this way diver includes the tactile sensations of the toes. Toes are the most sensitive, the balance stability depends on them.
Flight positions 1) There are no "half-positions" in diving, there are only exactly executed flight positions - full tuck and full pike! 2) Shoulders should be lowered in such a way that the neck is released from tension and lengthened.
The practical application THEORY OF EVERYTHING 1) All dryland exercises, feet first jumps, lineups and lead-ups should be performed using three positions: tuck, pike and straight. 2) All lead-ups for twisting dives (with feet first entry) should be finished using full tuck and full pike positions.
Time interval from the connection till the flight position should be as short as possible!
Come-out of somersaulting dives: legs and arms movements In all somersaulting dives: 1. Come-out should be initiated from legs (kick-out). Performing takeoff, is contrary. 2. Legs should move faster then arms. Performing takeoff, is contrary. 3. Arms movement are first directed towards the body, but not towards the water. These statements applies to both types of technique - straight-line-come out (once come-out) and grab-and-stretch come-out (come-out through angle).
Come-out of twisting dives: arms movements Twist begins with an asymmetrical movement of the hands - one hand rises, and the other hand descends. Come-out of twisting dives starts from the adjustment: the same hand rises, and the same hand descends.
The hands positions after the forward rotation
The hands positions after the back rotation
Always protect the diver's hand!
Tonic neck reflex (cervical-tonic reflex) - regulates the extension / flexion of the corresponding muscle groups
Divers, who showed a low result in preliminary competitions do not qualify for the final. Similarly, in the process of teaching: if the quality of the initial training is poor, if technical errors become memorized skills, then getting into the elite becomes impossible.
The problem is not just which errors get in, it s how do you get them out? Grossman's Law: Complex problems have simple, easy to understand wrong answers. (Murphy's Laws) Look for the cause of the error, rather than the outcome!
Stretching. Knees: Rotate your knees in a circle, keeping them together and bending down slightly.
Stretching Stretching the Major Muscle Groups Static Stretches Hamstrings: Hang down and try to reach your toes; don t push it. Keep legs and back straight. Just go down to a comfortable level for your
