1 December 2018 Highdown Sport and Leisure Autumn Term Aspire & Achieve News Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who completed the Facilities Survey questionnaire that we circulated last month. The results have been incorporated into our bid to the ESFA for funding to refurbish the sports block. After our bid for funding failed last year, we have revamped our bid and are sitting with fingers and toes crossed that we win when the results come out in April In the meantime we will strive to maintain the building as operational as possible. We are still open over the festive season so when you feel the need to work off that Turkey and Mince Pies or Christmas Pudding then please do pop in to say hello to the team. It s traditionally a very quiet time in the sports centre so a good time to get in there and feel virtuous at the end of your workout. On behalf of the team, I would like to say thank you for your continued support of HSL and wish you a peaceful and relaxing break over the festive season. 3 Exercise of the month Instructions for Arnold Press 1. Sit on an exercise bench with back support and hold two dumbbells in front of you at about upper chest level with your palms facing your body and your elbows bent. Tip: Your arms should be next to your torso. The starting position should look like the contracted portion of a dumbbell curl. 2. Now to perform the movement, raise the dumbbells as you rotate the palms of your hands until they are facing forward. 3. Continue lifting the dumbbells until your arms are extended above you in straight arm position. Breathe out as you perform this portion of the movement. We recommend doing 10 repetitions, 2-4 sets. Benefits 1. Increases strength in shoulders and works all of the shoulder. 2. Helps with shoulder stability and mobility. 3. Strength in this movement can cross over into over overhead movements such as the overhead press and bench.

5 Yoga Classes - Kate Cullum Kate is a fully qualified yoga instructor with over 20 years experience teaching Vinyasa and Hatha yoga in and around Caversham and has specialist teaching qualifications in Sports Yoga. With a background in the design industry she brings a creative edge to her sequences keeping classes fun, friendly & relaxed. Students are encouraged to go at their own pace and classes are small so can be adapted to suit you and help you to get the most out of your practice. "My classes are all about making you and your body feel the best it possibly can, to be able to move like you used to!" With a strong focus on the breath & alignment moving through a series of dynamic standing sequences, through to core work and longer seated stretches creating strength & flexibility in the body before finishing with a deep, nourishing relaxation at the end. Classes: Tuesdays Saturdays each Members Section Congratulations to John Macphee John has been regularly attending the gym four to five times a week for a minimum of two hours since becoming a member in August. During the past few months while John has been a member at Highdown Sport and Leisure he has become significantly stronger in the weight room, reduced body fat, improved his core strength and can swim like a shark. For John s dedication and the work he has put into his fitness goals we would like to reward him with one month s free gym and swim membership for a family member or friend along with a one off voucher for free use of any of the HSL facilities of his choice.
