1 PED 145 Team Sports and Conditioning Spring 2009 Instructor: Professor Gengler Office: SHNCCK 206 Office Phone: Hours: Upon Appointment Tues 2:00pm-3:15pm, Thurs. 2:00pm-3:15pm This is a nearly all-weather outdoor course. While there will be some classroom sessions about fitness-related topics, we will be participating in team sports, engaging in fitness assessment, and participating in fitness activities nearly each time we meet as long as there is no lightning or other severe weather condition. I am certain there will be times when it is wet, cold, and/or windy. It is important to dress appropriately. Wear multiple layers of clothing, hats, and gloves to address cold and windy weather. A water-resistant (not waterproof or rubber) jacket helps to keep rain away from the skin. Prolonged exposure to sunlight has been linked to the development of skin cancer. Be certain to wear a sun block product with AT LEAST SPF 15 protection factor. Re-apply it frequently. This course may require outdoor activities that increase your possible exposure to ticks. Ticks may transmit Lyme and other diseases. You may decrease your risk of being bitten through the use of Permethrin or Deet tick repellants which may be obtained through garden centers, hardware, drug or sporting goods stores. Students should tuck their pants into their socks before being exposed to outdoor areas. Students should check themselves and others after outdoor activities. Also, see attached on ticks. If you are uncertain about whether the class will meet you can call the office at before noon. If there is no cancellation made by then class will be on. Many of the activities will be physically taxing. All students must be certain that they have eaten adequately during the day and have consumed adequate water. Water should be consumed prior to, during, and after active participation in physically demanding activities. Products that contain caffeine or alcohol act as diuretics and may deplete the body of essential fluid. It is very important to wear a good pair of footwear. This does not mean that they have to be expensive. A good shoe will feel comfortable and support your arch. Finally, if you have been sedentary for a long time, have physical or medical problems that may limit your ability to participate safely in this course, or are over 35 years old, you should consult with your physician before enrolling in this course. This class will meet 20 times. After the class has met 20 times, the course is over. This will allow course completion despite inclement weather. The student is required to attend each class meeting. Any absence beyond one absence will result in the student's final average and, therefore, grade being lowered 5 points. Each lateness or early departure is equal to one half of an absence. If you attend but are unable to participate for any reason, you will be marked absent. The fourth absence (or the equivalent) will result in the student failing the course. Students must be able to take their own pulse after each play session. The instructor may check the accuracy of the pulse at any time. If you have difficulty finding your pulse, consult the instructor for tips. Failure to accurately record your pulse will result in the lowering of the fitness assessment grade.

2 Students who have medical/physical or other chronic or episodic conditions that will prevent full participation in this course should withdraw from this course immediately. No one will be excused from participation. Smoking is never permitted during class time. This class is intended to be a safe learning experience. Any individual who demonstrates behavior that is dangerous to the safety of any individual in the course or that continues, despite warning from the instructor, to interfere with the instructional process may be withdrawn from the course by the instructor and receive a failing grade. COURSE OBJECTIVES: By the end of the semester, the student will: Develop beginning skills of a variety of team sports. Demonstrate and put to use the basic strategy principles involved in the game of SPORTS USED FOR THAT CLASS. Identify the rules of and strategies of a variety of team sports Improve physical fitness through a variety of sport specific exercises. Evaluation Policy: Active participation in playing & practice sessions 25% Active participation in fitness assessment 25% Final 25% Journal 25% Students must submit a photocopy of their up-to-date journal/assessment at the Tuesday class meeting each week. Failure to submit this assignment or submitting an improperly maintained log sheet will result in the final course average being reduced by 2 points each time this happens. Don t lose the journal/assessment paper in this outline. It has a value of 50% of your grade. Make a copy of it from time to time. In that way if you ever lose the original, you won t lose all your data. Attendance: The student is required to attend each class meeting. Inclement Weather: Classes will generally not be canceled for inclement weather unless there is lightning or extreme inclement weather. Inclement weather, even severe inclement weather, does not ensure that the class in canceled. If there is a question about whether or not the class is canceled, the student may call for confirmation. Students are expected to dress appropriately for each class. The order of the sports we participate in may change based upon weather conditions and court availability.
