1 Polestar Pilates Asia Retreat 2016 Nexus - Making Connections RETREAT WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS PRE- RETREAT ADVANCED TEACHER COURSE FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT OUTCOME MEASURE Presenter: Dr. Brent Anderson and Shelly Power Duration: 8hr Alignment is a key principle in Pilates. It is essential for Pilates teachers to develop a keen eye and a deeper understanding of postural alignment and variances to assess what intervention will produce the greatest change in clients performance and overall outcome. Using the Polestar Function Movement Outcome Measure (FMOM), students will develop skills in static and dynamic postural assessment. This more elaborate screening tool, the FMOM, brings to light key anatomical landmarks to improve the teacher s eye in assessing symmetries and asymmetries that are common to many clients. Emphasis will be placed on how Pilates exercises can influence asymmetries. Students will refine their interpretation skills appropriate for their scope of practice and how to apply this information to design a safe and effective program or when to refer the client to the appropriate care provider. RETREAT CLASSES UP TO DOWN MAT Presenter: Sam Robinson Up to Down Matwork combines the strength and endurance from the matwork exercises with the functionality of the studio work. Participants will be taken through a flowing sequence where the body moves from standing up to lying down and everywhere in between. Participants will learn new transitions to take clients from Standing to lying on the mat in all planes of movement. Variations of equipment exercises will give new ideas for preparation of

2 the matwork repertoire. Upper and lower extremity weight bearing exercises will be used throughout. Movements from the workout could be taught as a mat class or as part of a studio session. MAT WITH CHI BALL Presenter: Kimberley Garlick Chi balls are a versatile and fun exercise tool that can make your core training even more effective. Give yourself a challenging workout with the deceptively simple looking prop. MORNING MAT Presenter: Mirko Turla Experience the ultimate in Pilates mat flow! The exercises are taught in a specific sequence to form a seamless routine that your clients will love! Mirko will also incorporate some floor drills from gymnastics for added challenge! TAI CHI PILATES Presenter: Shinji Nakamura You will experience an amazing "Standing integration" in this class. RETREAT WORKSHOPS WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER: Presenter: Shelly Power Duration: 4hr How hard should Pilates be? In this workshop, Shelly Power teaches you ways to use as much is necessary in your body to obtain efficient movement patterns. By using much

3 simpler information with your clients, they will have a better understanding of how they should be moving. She starts the workshop with a Mat class, then goes into a lecture where she breaks down each of the exercises. It's not just important for your clients to learn the choreography, they also need to learn the best quality of movement they can do. Objectives - Learn tips and tricks to help clients - Learn how to put these tips into practice on your own body - Gather information so you can find an ease with each movement This workshop was filmed at the 2013 Polestar Life Conference in San Diego, California. FABULOUS FASCIA Presenter: Alexander Bohlander Duration: 4hr The discovery of this decade - fascia as an active, powerful integrative and dynamic structure - and the training method of this century - Polestar Pilates, will be presented in union in this workshop with Alexander Bohlander. Learn about the qualities of this body tissue - Stability/Mobility/Sensitivity/Rebound and apply and connect it to the Pilates principles. In this workshop you will learn both, active movement integration and hands on therapeutic and non-therapeutic maneuvers to balance out fascia and lay the foundation for a healthy, healing, pain free body in movement. NEUROSCIENCE AND PILATES Presenter: Serafino Ambrosio Pre-requisite: None. Suited for Pilates Enthusiasts, Studio Clients, Polestar Students and s Neuroscience has taken big steps forward in the movement world. Do you know the new research? This workshop will give you many ideas on how to you your mind and body in ways to improve your teaching, to bring it to the 'next' level. PILATES AND MORE FOR LUMBO-SACRUM INSTABILITY Presenter: Alice Becker

4 In this workshop, the exercise repertoire is directed towards facilitating pelvic-lumbo stability and control. We will explore movement possibilities on the Pilates equipment (Trapeze, Chair and Reformer), plus mat exercises on small apparatus. A combination of these methods and their equipment, offers powerful resources on restoration of body intelligence and core control efficiency, plus maintenance of harmonious movement, for populations that suffer or had suffered from lumbo-sacrum pain or instability. RUNITY FUNDAMENTALS Presenter: Juan Nieto Pre-requisite: None. Suited for Pilates Enthusiasts, Studio Clients, Polestar Students and s Running continues to be one of the leading and growing forms of recreational exercise. This also means there are an increasing number of injuries caused by improper form and unhealthy habits developed through faulty running mechanics. Runity provides training skills that assess and enhance running performance so that more people may enjoy running for longer with less risk of injury. Objectives: 1. Understand the characteristics of efficient running techniques 2. Know the biomechanics of running (kinetics and kinematics) 3. Understand the functional requirements needed to run 4. 5 PROGRAMMING FOR A PREGNANCY MAT CLASS Presenter: Catherine Gianitto Duration: 4hr This workshop is aimed at beginner level matwork instructors who are now ready to add pregnancy classes to their repertoire. It will outline the common guidelines for working with the Pregnant client in a small group class matwork environment. It will show how to modify the Pilates matwork exercises for the Pregnant Client as well as introducing some new exercises to assist their posture and changing body shape. Obstetric and Gynecological guidelines will be discussed so that you have a good foundation to exercise pregnant clients safely. MOVE ON THE OOV Presenter: Kimberley Garlick Prerequisite: Suited for Pilates Enthusiasts, Studio Clients, Polestar Students and This active class will apply the Polestar Pilates Matwork repertoire to the OOV. We will look at how the OOV can work effectively and safely for all body types by adjusting the positioning for each individual in; supine, sitting and prone. Students will also learn how to identify faulty movement patterns within themselves and their clients. The class is an intermediate level, it will be challenging, interesting and enjoyable while challenging your dynamic stability. OPTIMISING REFORMER WORK FOR THORACIC MOBILITY Prerequisite: Polestar Comprehensive or Reformer Graduate (or equivalent from a recognized school) Brent Anderson is back with his tips and techniques to maintain your healthy spine when working on the Reformer. Practice exercises like "the typewriter," knee circles and some wonderful exercises for thoracic mobility. In this class, Brent looks at returning to movement after dealing with restricted breathing due to illnesses like bronchitis and pleurisy THE PELVIC FLOOR IN OUR PILATES COMMUNITY

6 At the 2015 PMA Conference in Denver, Colorado, Brent Anderson and Hadar Schwartz tested their theories about the pelvic floor. They used two ultrasound machines to show the relationship between the pelvic floor and the diaphragm, and how the pelvic floor responds best to natural breath. Join Brent as he shares the findings and his conclusions with regard to pelvic for activity in our Pilates teaching CUEING THE NERVOUS SYSTEM In this unique workshop taught by Brent Anderson you will learn the importance of cueing the nervous system rather than muscle systems and how to provide the best possible experience for yourself and your clients. In this workshop Brent will highlight the following: 1. Changing our focus from maximal recruitment of muscle to one of minimal recruitment. As much as necessary as little as possible or in different terms, movement efficiency. 2. Using images of space and direction rather than muscle contractions in our cueing 3. Remembering that our body is always adapting, often in a negative way. Our clients always will need external feedback from us. In other words never assume that because it was taught once that it is there to stay. SITTING IS THE NEW SMOKING It is time to increase the public s awareness of the pathologies of sitting. Anderson will take you through the steps of human development and where we have gone astray in our social expectations in school, work and home. Learn easy steps to overcome the negativity of sitting. Sitting is a greater part of our life now than it was 100 years ago when Joseph Pilates developed Contrology. Let s take a careful look at what exercises in the existing Pilates repertoire can battle the effects of prolonged sitting. Lastly, Anderson will discuss the aspect of client behavior outside of the studio or clinic and how to successfully coach behavior change and avoid getting stuck sitting.
