3 Contents of the course catalogue This catalogue presents an overview of the modules (where the teaching language is English (unless all students are Danish speaking)) offered in the master s programme in Sports Sciences and Health at the University of Southern Denmark by research units at the Institute of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics. The structure of the master s programme The selection of modules and the composition of the study programme are subject to the following conditions: Modules described in the course catalogue can be freely selected within the framework of the master s programme curriculum you are enrolled on. Modules from other programmes may be included with the prior approval of the Board of Studies for Sport Science and Health at SDU The dissertation is worth 30 ECTS points. It can be expanded on request by applying to the Board of Studies 3

5 Moving in Old Age Course scope 15 ECTS points Course period 1 st quarter, autumn 2017 Special conditions The course is part of the basic course package. The course cannot be elected by students who have passed the course Elderly in motion previously. Skills developed Content description Ageing challenges both the world of sports and the policies of public health. More and more elderly people become active in various types of exercise and sport activities. At the same time, the public expresses increasing concern about serious health problems following with the ageing of population. The course focuses on these changes and on implied challenges: How to tackle future intervention in this field of sport and movement culture? The course combines a biological-physiological and a cultural-humanistic approach to the study of ageing and movement. With respect to human biology, the course looks at the normal physiological and biomechanical changes induced by ageing, age-related diseases and the impact of physical training. This part includes exercises with ergonomic tests, ADL measurement, PPT tests and programs of physical activity. From the side of humanities and social sciences, ageing is presented as a social and cultural process, and the student learns to study cases of ageing and bodily movement as well as interventions under the aspects of cultural history, cultural anthropology, and cultural psychology. Also, the student meets and interacts with elderly people in connection with bodily practice. The course thus qualifies the competences of interdisciplinary knowledge and of understanding the relations between theories and practice. The student trains ability to argue, analyze and reflect ageing and movement in an independent and critical way on an academic level. The student learns both to apply methods of biological test and measuring, and methods of case study and cultural understanding. Knowledge: The course qualifies interdisciplinary knowledge between biological science and cultural studies of ageing as well as the understanding of relations between theories and practice. Skills: The student trains ability to argue, analyze and reflect ageing and movement in an in-dependent and critical way on an academic level. 5

6 Competences: The student learns both to apply methods of biological test and measuring, and methods of case study, cultural understanding, and intervention. And to use these competences in a balanced way I future professional situations related to ageing. Forms of instruction, including language The teaching is comprised by a combination of lectures, text exercises and student driven presentations. In addition, the students will perform Lab exercises. The teaching language is English. Exam and grading The examination is a cross-disciplinary essay, not exceeding 20 normal pages. The paper is evaluated according to the 7-step scale. 7 Physical activity and health - the evidence for recommendation Course scope 15 ECTS points Course period 1 st quarter, autumn 2017 Special conditions The course is part of the basic course package There is a maximum of 32 seats available Forms of instruction The teaching language is English (unless all students are Danish speaking). Examination The examination will be a pages report written in two weeks. The student gets a text defining the topic and should search literature, sort it, give an overview and dis-cuss key articles. Internal evaluation, applying the Danish 7-scale. 7

8 Aerob Training and Transport of Oxygen Course scope 15 ECTS Module responsible Kurt Jensen Course period 2. quarter, autumn 2017 Special conditions Part of the elective courses Teaching language is English if foreign students take part in the course Contents The concept of oxygen-transport and aerobic training and the testing of these elements Limiting factors for aerobic performance including regulating mechanisms The effect of exercise and inactivity on aerobic performance Skills developed Knowledge: The student is able to Demonstrate knowledge about the concept of the chain of oxygen delivery, including ability to identify and characterise the different parts of the chain and their interaction Account for prevalent markers of aerobic performance at maximal work (VO2max, v- VO2max, Wattmax) and during endurance exercise at a submaximal level (LT, VT, AT, MaxLaSS, critical power, cycling efficiency, running economy) Account for the effect of exercise on aerobic performance Skills: The student is able to Describe and analyse the process of oxygen uptake at submaximal work (O2-kinetics) and maximal work, including ability to discuss regulating mechanisms related to aerobic energy consumption Describe and discuss the limiting factors during aerobic performance at maximal and submaximal work Competences: The student should be able to Test aerobic performance during maximal and submaximal exercise. This involves competences to evaluate 1) the technical completion of the test, 2) the result of the test compared to test-criteria and 3) the result of the test compared to existing material Acquire new knowledge on oxygen transport and aerobic performance through the reading of scientific literature and take a critical stand as regards the quality of the literature 8

10 Physical activity and health in work life Course scope 15 ECTS points Course period 3 rd quarter, spring 2018 Special conditions The course is part of the basic course package The teaching language is English. Content description A number of risk factors that include bad postures and sustained low-level repetitive work, as e.g. computer work, are established for contracting work related musculo-skeletal pain. These types of exposures at work present increasing challenges for public health as the number of people suffering from work related musculoskeletal pain or are on sick-leave is constantly high in Europe. Physiological responses for those who have pain are important knowledge to increase our understanding. Physical activity at work and during leisure time has been suggested to offset these occurrences. Objectives and aims To provide the participants with knowledge on the current state-of-the-art in understanding the exposure-health outcome relation To discuss methods and models used in the research field of occupational health and their applications in relation to studies performed at the work place and in laboratory models To discuss to what extent and why physical activity impacts on prevention and reduction of work-related musculoskeletal symptoms. 12 Best Practice in Childhood physical activity and health Course scope 15 ECTS credits points Course period 4 th quarter, spring 2018 (3 weeks). Special conditions The teaching language is English. The course can also be included in an International study program: European Master in Health and Physical Activity (EMH&PA). The course is structured as an Intensive Program (IP) with a condensed teaching period that lasts three weeks. Objectives of the module The objective of this IP is to provide master level students with research based knowledge and insight on the field of health enhancing physical activity in relation to children. In this way, the students are enabled to use their competences achieved for the purpose of treating a variety of issues in an independent, critical and constructive manner. Competences When finalizing the course the students will be able to: Profession competences: Participate in the development and implementation of interventions and programs aiming at prevention and health promotion among children and youth. Communicate and undertake interdisciplinary initiatives on subjects, methods, and theories of special relevance for the area of childhood health and physical activity. Deliver high quality work in relation to the multidisciplinary area of childhood health and physical activity. Theoretical and academic competences: Analyze and assess the influence of core determinants of health enhancing physical activity in relation to children and youth. Carry out appraisals and counsel on the basis of best available evidence on the relative effectiveness of various health promotion and disease preventive interventions in relation to children and health enhancing physical activity. Identify best practice in order to develop and implement effective and sustainable interventions targeting the area children and health enhancing physical activity. Content of the Course: Dealing with best practice issues related to the development, implementation and evaluation of physical education and other PA initiatives targeting special populations (e.g. preschool children, ethnic and obese children) the program focuses on: 12

13 The academic rationale for the inclusion of sport, exercise, fitness and related health issues in the public health domain State-of-the-art scientific data on the physiological, epidemiological, psychological, sociological and social factors underpinning best practice issues in children s participation in PA and sport Methodological, ethical and practical issues which underpin scientific investigation and intervention in the field of child health and PA. Opportunities for students to obtain a European perspective on the general topic, and offer them tools to evaluate how policy issues differ between countries. An international, multi-disciplinary approach will be adopted. Work loads of the students (hours): 20 Preparation for the course (reading) 260 Preparation and lectures, workshops and presentations 140 Exam (Essay) Teaching methods/pedagogical issue: Lectures, seminars, practical workshops, student presentations and written exams. The teaching staff will have international scientific qualifications in core fields. Learning activities will be based on lectures together with project and case work and seminars. The ambition is to engage students in the organisation, execution and assessment of various educational sequences. E-learn: Study material and virtual rooms for discussions between students and students and staff, will be made available on the e-learn platform. Mandatory and/or recommended literature: PDF files of the literature will be available via e-learn platform. Examination: A prerequisite for taking part in the exams are participation in workshops and student group presentations The exams consist of two parts: - Passing a multiple choice test (internal evaluation) - Passing a written essay of no more than 28,800 units exclusive references (internal evaluation, applying the Danish 7-step scale) 13

14 Muscle function Resistance training Course scope 15 ECTS points Course period 4 th quarter, spring 2018 Special conditions The course is part of the basic course package Content description This master s programme focuses on the range of adaptive plasticity in muscle mass and neuromuscular function in response to resistance training, with special emphasis on aspects related to athletic performance, ageing, musculo-tendinous injury, disease and general fitness. Course load: 15 ECTS points; 40 hours of lectures (each lecture hour = 45 min), six hours of experimental lab work. Objectives and aims During the Course the Student is expected to achieve the following qualifications and skills: Academic qualifications Can discus adaptive changes in muscle mechanical function evoked by resistance training. Can discus adaptive changes in neural function, muscle morphology and architecture, tendon function and intracellular signaling events evoked by resistance training. Can discus age related changes in neuronal function, muscle morphology and muscle architecture, and to discus the effect of resistance training on these parameters. Can explain major molecular signaling pathways involved in muscle hypertrophy and atrophy. Can explain the effects of resistance training on various disease and pathology conditions (type II diabetes, hip replacement, tendinopathy, hypertension, muscle strain injury) Practical, Didactic Skills Can select and present relevant scientific literature related to the above aspects, and provide theoretical and practical teaching in this field. Can plan and supervise resistance training protocols within sports and exercise, in elderly individuals and clinical patients, and to prevent and rehabilitate various types of musculoskeletal overuse injury. Form of instruction Combinations of Lectures and student presentations. In addition, two Lab Exercises will be offered for those interested to participate (I. isokinetic dynamometry, II. force plate analysis and Notting Power Rig).
