1 Ashley Mitchell EDCP 320 Physical Fitness Scavenger Hunt: Rationale Cross-curricular education helps break down the compartmentalized nature of the contemporary education system and helps students make learning connections. Therefore, I decided to combine Social Studies and Physical Education to allow students to review and apply their knowledge of directions and maps. This activity is also designed to be fun, physically active, and encourage teamwork. The scavenger hunt will involve two grade 3/ 4 classes and occur near the end year at the end of the social studies mapping unit. The required exercises at each station/hiding place are ones that have been taught throughout the year through a combination of PE classes and DPA. In order to accommodate both classes the activity will take place after lunch, commence in the gym and conclude in the pod. Since the activity requires students to be spread out over the school grounds, grade 7 student leaders will be asked to assist at the different hiding places to ensure students are completing the exercises and allowing the teachers to travel between stations. The lesson would still be effective with only one class and without student leaders. However, the scavenger hunt would need to take place in a smaller area with fewer stations to ensure students are supervised. The Physical Fitness Scavenger hunt incorporates the three principles of learning that the British Columbia s Integrated Resource Packages are centered on (British Columbia Ministry of Education, 2006). Firstly, the lesson requires students to be active, both physically and cognitively. Secondly, the scavenger hunt takes learning outside which may help students that learn better from a hands on activity. Lastly, it allows

2 students to apply their own individual knowledge, and learn from their fellow team members (British Columbia Minstry of Education, 2006). Cross-Curricular Lesson Plan: Physical Fitness Scavenger Hunt Grade: ¾ Subject(s): Social Studies and Physical Education Social studies lesson: 8/10. Time: 60 minutes Prescribed Learning Outcomes: Physical Education (Grade 4): A6 participate daily (e.g., five times a week) in a variety of moderate to vigorous physical activities C2 describe fair play principles for participating in physical activity (e.g., respectful of differences, cooperative, accepting) C3 demonstrate leadership in selected physical activities Social Studies (Grade 3): A3 use simple maps to interpret and present information Objective(s): 1) Students will be able to use their directional knowledge to complete a physical fitness scavenger hunt. 2) Students will participate safely in a fitness scavenger hunt while working cooperatively in groups and following the scavenger hunt rules Materials/Equipment: - 8 Cards- laminated with specific exercises and instructions on each one for each station - 5 Basket balls - 5 Skipping ropes - 15 bean bags - 2 cones - 48 Scavenger hunt handouts and 48 maps of the school grounds with a compass rose (alternatively, one of each per group). Assistance: To ensure safety and promote leadership, there will a grade 7 student leaders will be at each station (8 students). The Lesson: Introduction This activity will include two grade ¾ classes. They will meet in the gym for a warm up and to go over instructions for the the scavenger hunt. Warm up: 5-7 minutes

3 Body Access prior knowledge: - Review directions with students Warm up game: NSEW - Use compass direction (North, south, east west) - I will call out direction; students will have to run in that direction. I will also call out different ways of moving- side step, hopping, skipping etc. to review methods of movement (PE Central, 2001) - (These movements will be used during the scavenger hunt. - Safety- Students will be reminded about the importance of controlled movement and personal space. 1) Explain scavenger hunt with to the students. - Give students handout and map and go over the rules that written on the handout ( See appendix 1). Check for understanding. Questions? 2) Briefly review previously learned exercises students will complete at each station. (See appendix 2 for sample exercise card with teaching cues and the 8 stations) - Since hiding spots will be placed all around the school, Grade 7 leaders will be at each station for safety, and to ensure the students are properly completing the exercises. Student leaders will also help with set up. Check for understanding. Questions? 3) Number off students into groups (Two classes, 48 students 8 groups of 6) 4) During the scavenger hunt, myself and the teacher from Division 3 will be walking around supervising students. 10 minutes 40 minutes Closure - Share answer with the class. - Group stretching - Discussion: Geocatching- great activity that gets you outdoors and is also like a scavenger hunt - Any questions? Extension Adaptation(s) 10 minutes Groups that finish early can design their own scavenger hunt The student with reading difficulty due to a visual impairment will have an enlarged map and scavenger hunt work sheet. All exercise cards at stations will also be on enlarged paper and teammates can help read.

4 Assessment Assessment will be formative. Students will be qualitatively assessed based on participation and ability to work as a team. See Appendix 3 for rubric.

5 Appendix 1: Handout Physical Activity Scavenger Hunt! Welcome to Division 3 and 4 Physical Activity Scavenger Hunt! Instructions and Rules: Before you begin, here are the rules that you must follow: 1) You will be divided into a team with 6 members. You MUST stay with your team and work together at all times. 2) Each group will be given a different starting clue. Use your map and knowledge of how to use the compass rose to find the next hiding spot. 3) The parking lot is OUT OF BOUNDS!! (There may be moving cars!) 4) You must complete the exercise at each station before you find the next hiding spot. 5) If there is another group using the equipment at the station when you arrive you must wait for them to finish before you begin. 6) When you have finished the exercise, turn over the exercise card record the letter(s) on the back of the exercise card on this handout 7) Use your map and your knowledge to find the next hiding spot. You must travel to the next location indicated on the back of each exercise card (ex. Skipping, walking, running, side stepping, hopping). 8) Once you have found all 8 stations return to the pod and unscramble the secret message. Remember to be safe, listen to the student leaders, work as a team, and have FUN! Station letters: Secret Message:

6 Appendix 2: Sample Exercise Card and Scavenger Hunt Stations Front of Card Lunge Station Congratulations on finding the lunge station! At this station you are required to do dynamic lunges around the entire basketball court. When you have completed this station, flip over the card and follow the next set of instructions. Figure 1 How to do lunges: Step 1: Start with your feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent. Step 2: Step forward with your right foot. Make sure your feet are still facing the same direction. Step 3: Keep your chest facing forward and your back straight, bend and lower your back knee towards the floor, raising your back heel off of the floor. Make sure your front knee does not go past your toes Step 4: Bring your back leg up to your forward leg. Step 5: Repeat with your left leg, travelling forward. (TeachPE.com, 2014) Back of the card Great work! You must skip to the next station. Directions: 1) From the basketball court skip north beside the parking lot (Remember the parking lot is OUT OF BOUNDS. 2) When you ve reach the front of the school skip to the East. 3) Your next location will be at the tree furthest to the east. A
