6 Aquatics Michael WATER AS THERAPY FOR Children WITH Autism Living with autism and developmental coordination disorder (DCD), 10-year-old Michael s gross and fine motor skills are taking a little longer to develop than those of most schoolaged children. Michael s mother, Laureen, says this delay makes it take longer for him to learn how to physically do things, but that it doesn t stop him from making a splash in the Aquatic Complex at the TLC. When Michael is in the water, it helps regulate him, Laureen said. It just does something really great for his body the water calms him. Laureen says Michael is enjoying Swim Kids 3, adding that while his form may not look as pretty as most swimmers at first, it just takes him a little more time to learn how to execute swimming techniques properly. She says it helps when instructors let him know what s happening ahead of time. Michael works well with the kids, but he likes to take the lead with the instructors, she said. He enjoys telling the kids what they should be doing and encouraging them. While Michael may need a little extra time to learn in the pool, he is quick to socialize with the aquatics staff before and after lessons. Laureen appreciates that the TLC staff are always so awesome with her son. Michael would hang out with the lifeguards all day if he could, she laughed. More than anything, Laureen says her son is just happy to be in the water. It s the calming effect that bobbing in the water has on Michael s body that helps him adjust to his surroundings and work on his motor skills with a little more ease. Aquatic Program Coordinator, Heidi Paul, encourages parents of kids with autism to introduce them to water at the TLC, as Michael s story is a perfect example of how aquatics can benefit them physically and mentally. Specialists have observed that many children with autism feel more at ease in water, which is likely due to the water pressure on their bodies that they don t normally feel on land, Heidi explained. Heidi adds that it s important for all children to be introduced to water at a young age for healthy development. Swimming is a physical activity that builds strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health for all kids, she said. It s an essential skill that, if started in childhood, can turn into a lifelong love of water that contributes to physical literacy and a healthy lifestyle. To learn more about our aquatic programs here at the TLC, turn to page 7 and be sure to register your little ones for winter/ spring swimming lessons. For children with autism who are uncomfortable in group settings, private lessons are also an option. Visit trileisure.com for more information. 16 Dryland Derek TLC Staff Builds COMMUNITY THROUGH Competition at the TLC If you have spent any time at the Fitness Centre in the TLC, you have likely seen Derek Galliford milling around the facility, whether he is working as a wellness representative, performing maintenance on the workout equipment, or making some noise at the SMS Equipment Lifting Platform. When he s not working at the TLC, Derek is hard at work organizing the annual Spruce Grove s Strongest Man event with fellow lifter, James Anderson, which brings together some of the Tri-Municipal Region s strongest men and women for a friendly competition that involves the art of lifting extremely heavy objects for sport. I ve been involved with the sport for six years, and in the Edmonton area, there hasn t been much for Strongman competitions, Derek said. The last one in Edmonton was held in 2012, so last year, James and I thought we should do up our own competition for the Tri-Municipal Region. With plenty of support from the TLC to host the event, Derek and James were able to recruit 14 competitors for the first annual Spruce Grove s Strongest Man competition in This success sparked a growing interest in multidisciplinary lifting across the Tri-Municipal Region, with more and more lifters appearing at the TLC. What s even more impressive about the 2015 event success, Derek adds, is the level of interest garnered by female lifters who wanted to get involved in this year s competition. Because our event was brand new last year, there weren t enough women interested to add a division, he explained. But when we announced this year s competition, we got bombarded by women asking if there would be a female division and we filled eight positions within two days. The number of competitors in 2016 s event doubled last year s turnout, and there was even a wait list for both the men s and women s divisions, which Derek says was unbelievable and super exciting. The support from the TLC has grown so much, which made it easier for us to get more sponsors this year, in addition to the amazing sponsors who supported us in 2015, he added. Already looking ahead to 2017 s competition, Derek says he wouldn t be able to organize the event year after year without the ongoing support from the TLC, not only as a venue sponsor, but as a facility that accommodates Strongman lifters in training throughout the year. The TLC is not your typical recreation centre, he said. The staff are forward-thinkers and have purchased good quality equipment in support of power lifting. Not all gyms support what we do; the TLC has always been supportive. STRONGMAN 101 According to Derek, Strongman is a sport in itself, bringing together all kinds of lifting techniques borrowed from power lifting and Olympic lifting to showcase their incredible ability to lift extremely heavy objects with flawless form. Instead of barbells, competitors press car axles. Instead of lifting weights, competitors lift cars. It s the ultimate strength sport. 28 Health & WELLNESS Strength and Conditioning at the TLC: MEET DR. JEFF CUBOS In sports, many overarching conversations revolve around outcomes: who won the game and who lost the game. However, here at the TLC, we want to remind young athletes that proper strength and conditioning should be their highest priority. This winter, the TLC is offering Strength and Conditioning programs that focus on athletic development and injury prevention for teams and individuals. Dr. Jeff Cubos, Chiropractor at Back on Track Chiropractic & Sport Injury Clinic, says proper strength training and conditioning can drastically reduce the risk of injuries in athletes starting at a young age. In the spring of 2016 at the TLC, Dr. Cubos helped run Girls in Motion, which was a Parkland School Division program that gave young female athletes tools to avoid knee injuries that, clinical evidence shows, are very common in school-aged girls. My role at Girls in Motion was to actively educate these girls on the importance of strength training to prevent knee injuries, he said. Several organizations have put together knee injury prevention programs, so I translated that into something meaningful for the girls to understand. Dr. Cubos involvement with Girls in Motion, along with his chiropractic experience, has made him a perfect fit for the Strength and Conditioning team at the TLC, which involves teaching young athletes about the importance of proper sport conditioning and development. Parents and children spend so much time and effort on the ice for hockey, or the field for soccer, and so forth, Dr. Cubos explained. But more often than not, the kids are not thoroughly prepared to withstand the physical demand of sports, so they ll get injured. The goal of Strength and Conditioning Athlete Development is to give sportsters the tools and training they need to perform at their highest potential while reducing the risk of sport injuries. Dr. Cubos says the TLC is committed to long-term athlete development, offering programs suited not only for school-aged kids, but also for athletes at all ages. The TLC doesn t just focus on the now, but throughout someone s entire athletic career, he said. They cater to children, young high-level athletes, professional athletes in the off-season, and even retired athletes who want to stay in proper shape.
