Outreach Skipping Demonstration Team: Sample Coaching Session Plan Introduction The purpose of this sample coaching plan is to assist teachers/coaches to establish a demonstration skipping team at their school. It outlines a seven weekly session plan to help guide skipping skill development and progressively linking skills together to music to form a routine. This coaching plan aims to develop a skipping routine that has a variety of skills and is enjoyable to perform. Use the blank template provided to plan your own coaching sessions and build on the base routine illustrated. Sample sessions are around 60 minutes, but can be adapted to the time available. This resource is designed to accompany the DVD Jump Rope for Heart Outreach Deadly La Pa Skipping Crew, and skipping skills videos which are also available on YouTube through the Jump Rope for Heart Outreach webpage: This resource refers to the Jump Rope for Heart Music CD, which is provided to schools participating in the Jump Rope for Heart Outreach program. Alternatively, any upbeat music suited to dance routines is suitable. Additional ideas for developing skipping routine choreography can be found in the Jump Rope for Heart Outreach Teacher s Manual from pages The manual is also available on the Jump Rope for Heart Outreach webpage. Skipping routines can be performed by the team to a range of audiences consider how your team can be encouraged to perform for the school and other community groups.

Week 2 Activity Description and teaching tips Equipment Time Single Bounce Double Bounce WEEK 1 Single Long Rope (one for each group of 5) 20mins this is 2 rotations of the rope before the skipper lands LINK IN A MINI energetic music. The Jump Rope for Heart CD has some good options and they can work in pairs or small groups to build a mini-routine of 3-4 skills.
Week 3 Activity Description and teaching tips Equipment Time and Single Long Rope Refer to Weeks 1and 2. (Form groups of 5) The Link The Link (Form pairs) skipper A & B stand beside each other swapping handles with their inside hands. skipper A & B then place ropes behind them on the count Ready Set Go, A&B move both pairs of arms at the same time over their bodies to jump the ropes. Double Dutch Double Dutch jumper stands by the shoulder of one of the turners jumper moves diagonally from turners side straight into the middle of the ropes jump approximately 5cm off the ground (should be enough to clear rope but not lose balance or rhythm) keep feet together, knees slightly bent, single bounce jump up and down aiming to land in approx same spot each time make sure jumper is in the middle of the double dutch ropes and is facing one of the turners practice jumping in time outside the rope while you are waiting your turn x 2 per group 1 LINK IN A MINI energetic music. The Jump Rope for Heart CD has some good options and they can work in pairs or small groups to build a mini-routine. Aim to link at least 4 skills together, with at least one original skill idea from the students.
Week 4 Activity Description and teaching tips Equipment Time The Link Double Dutch Refer to Week 2 Single Rope x 2 Don t miss a loop Don t miss a loop (Form one large group) students follow in a domino motion following each other after each loop. students follow the shape of a figure 8. 1 BUILD energetic music. The Jump Rope for Heart CD has some good options and they can work in pairs or small groups to build a miniroutine. Aim to link at least 5-6 skills together in a sequence using single and long ropes, with at least one original idea incorporated. Each skill should be performed to at least a count of eight. 1
Week 5 Activity Description and teaching tips Equipment Time The Link Refer to Week 2 Don t miss a Loop Double Dutch Refer to Week 4 x 3 per group Side Swing Side Swing swing the rope to right side of body, left arm moves across the body and hold the right arm out keeping hands close together without crossing repeat the swing on the left side open arms out and jump repeat on left side of body 360 Turn 360 Turn the skipper is jumping forwards as they side swing to the right their feet begin pivoting moving around in a 360 direction attempt on right side repeat on left Triangle Triangle (Form groups of 6) 3 rope turners stand equal distance apart from each other with equal length ropes stand close enough that the ropes will touch the ground, but further enough apart that ropes won t touch each other all turners will move their hands at exactly the same time, turning their hands into the middle of the circle, in time to a double bounce count 3 skippers move between ropes BUILD energetic music. Begin to practice sections of the routine to get the timing and flow right. Share roles around so all are involved and break the routine down into sections (do a few skills in a row, 2-3 components work best). Once one block is mastered, move to the next. 2
Week 6 Activity Description and teaching tips Equipment Time The Link Side Swing Refer to Week 2 Refer to Week Turn Refer to Week 5 NEW SKILL Burpee Burpee do 2 jumps still holding the handles go into a squat position making sure that the rope is still in front of the body then stretch legs out not letting the middle of the body sink come back into a squat and continue skipping BUILD energetic music. Further practice sections of the routine to get the timing and flow right. Share roles around so all are involved and break the routine down into blocks. Once one block is mastered, move to the next. 3
Week 7 Activity Description and teaching tips Equipment Time Practice any variety of skills they have learnt Refer to previous weeks NEW SKILL Traveller Traveller (small groups) skipper A checks that they have a long enough rope to travel with i.e. must be able to fit over A and one other skipper. Generally Skipper A would be taller than skipper B and C. skipper A lines up beside B and C with A, B and C all jumping in time to a double bounce count without rope. skipper A says Ready Set Go and does a double bounce and travels behind Skipper B & jumps with rope going over Skipper B. skipper A leaves a basic jump between skipper B and C. line up more than 2 children, see how many can be travelled over without a miss. Long Rope Skills Practice a variety of long rope skills. Refer to previous weeks and/or encourage students to develop their own skill variation BUILD Begin to practice sections of your routine to get the timing and flow right. Share roles around so all are involved and break it down in to blocks. Once you master one block, move to the next. 3 By the end of this week, student should have a basic routine of at least 8 skills linked to music, that can be built on with further practice.
