Hurst OFFICE PHONE: OFFICE: T202 DIVISION PHONE: OFFICE HOURS: By Appointment khurst@dcccd.edu PHED 1164 CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Students are introduced to wellness related concepts and activities for the purpose of gaining knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate personal fitness level and to develop a personal lifelong fitness program. Activities include, but are not limited to: aerobics, circuit training, muscular development, flexibility, agility exercises, weight training and body composition (3 Lab.) PHED 1164 CORE COURSE OBJECTIVE: The objective of this Institutional Option of the Core Curriculum is to help students recognize the importance of maintaining health and wellness. Students will engage in physical assessments, various physical activities, and other health and wellness activities that will enable them to evaluate, design, and implement a life-long approach to maintaining health and wellness. PHED 1164 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the completion of the course, students should be able to: 1. To evaluate personal fitness levels and health behaviors within the parameters of fitness components. This will be assessed through written exam and pre and post test physical assessment. 2. To develop plans for and to demonstrate active participation in a personal fitness program for improvement in fitness levels and health behaviors. This will be evaluated through workout logs, portfolio and written exam. 3. Describe the relationship and the interaction of lifestyle and disease and the major issues that affect our health and wellness. This will be assessed through portfolio and written exam. 4. Understand the contribution of physical activity to overall physical, social, mental and emotional well being. This will be assessed through written exam and written assignment. 5. Identify methods and techniques for attaining lifelong fitness and wellness. This will be assessed through written exam and portfolio. 6. Demonstrate an understanding of basic nutrition principles, weight control, injury prevention and stress management. This will be assessed through portfolio, written exam and written assignment. CORE COURSE INTELLECTUAL COMPETENCIES: In addition to the innate physical aspects of this course, the following core intellectual competency will be

2 included as well: Critical Thinking: Students will apply sound fitness/wellness concepts to a personally designed program; may evaluate various exercise or diet programs for safety and validity; may evaluate data based upon fitness/wellness assessments; and make appropriate lifestyle choices to enhance and support a personal fitness/wellness program. INTRUCTIONAL METHODS: Lecture and laboratory. REQUIRED MATERIALS 1. Required Text: Title: FITNESS AND WELLNESS, Tenth Edition Authors: Hoeger and Hoeger. Publisher: Wadsworth, Cengage Learning ISBN: Attire: Appropriate workout attire must be worn. Jeans are unacceptable. LECTURES/DISCUSSIONS/LEARNING UNITS/LESSONS/CHAPTERS Orientation: This will provide the student with a general introduction to the course and textbook. Chapter 1: The Importance of Physical Fitness and Wellness: This chapter will introduce students to the importance of physical fitness and wellness. It also provides information about healthy life expectancy, physical activity, and skill related fitness. Chapter 2: Assessment of Physical Fitness: This chapter will introduce students to the importance of assessing their physical fitness. It also provides information on how to assess fitness levels as well as a wide variety of ways to do the evaluating. Chapter 3: Exercise Prescription: This chapter will introduce students to the importance of a well developed exercise program. It also provides information about intensity of exercise and tips for exercise adherence. Chapter 4: Evaluating Fitness Activities: This chapter will introduce students to the importance of utilizing a variety of cardiovascular exercises. It also provides information about metabolic equivalents (METS). Chapter 5: Nutrition and Wellness: This chapter will introduce students to the importance of nutrition to overall health and wellness. It also provides information about micronutrients, macro-nutrients, and eating disorders. Chapter 6: Weight Management: This chapter will introduce students to the importance of weight management and dieting. It also provides information about different mainstream diet programs, resting metabolic rate, and its effect on weight management. Chapter 7: Stress Management and Assessment: This chapter will introduce students to the importance of managing stress in one s life. It also provides information about how to manage that stress and identifying risk factors of stress. Chapter 8: A Healthy Lifestyle Approach: This chapter will introduce students to the importance of managing risk factors for Coronary Heart Disease and Cancers. It also provides information about preventable causes of death as well as ten simple lifestyle habits for fitness and wellness.

3 Chapter 9: Relevant Questions & Answers about Fitness & Wellness: This chapter will introduce students to the importance of asking pertinent questions and getting proper answers about fitness and wellness. It also provides information about aging and exercise, exercising in heat precautions, and acute sports injury treatment. COURSE POLICIES I. Exercise Precautions: The basis of all good exercise programs is common sense. You will be guided through a fitness program that includes all essential components of a safe program, but there is an individual responsibility for following exercise precautions. If you have refrained from regular physical activity for a long time, have recently had surgery, are forty or more years of age, are obese, or have specific limitations, you are advised to consult with your physician before starting this program. Progress gradually and sensibly in your workouts, learn to read your body signs. Initially you may experience slight, temporary discomfort so be sensible about pacing yourself. If you are unsure about a particular discomfort or pain, ask a reliable person such as your doctor. If you experience chest pains, palpitations, excessive shortness of breath or wheezing, or persistent light-headedness, STOP EXERCISING. Consult with your physician before you continue with your exercise program. 2. Class Etiquette/Rules: You are required to be dressed in appropriate workout attire in order to participate in the workout. You are expected to be punctual. If you miss any portion of the class, you will not receive full credit. Please turn off cell phones and pagers; they are not to be used during class. 3. Attendance Policy: The development and maintenance of physical fitness is a progressive and continuous endeavor. Regular attendance is essential. Therefore, attendance and class participation is given major consideration in computing semester course grade. There is not a general "excused absence" policy. 4. Make-up Policy: It is your responsibility to consult the instructor following an absence to address any make-up concerns. A make-up for a written examination or assignment must be completed the class following the scheduled exam or due date; make-up exams will be at the Testing Center and carry a ten-point penalty. 5. Academic Honesty: It is you responsibility to adhere to school policies on academic honesty. If you chose to be academically dishonest, the first offense will result in the student receiving a zero for that assignment/ test/ project. A second offense will result in the student receiving a grade of F for the course. CLASS PARTICIPATION will constitute 30% OF FINAL GRADE (300 points). You are expected to participate to the best of your ability in every class meeting. This grade is related to your attendance and workout charts. The first absence will not result in a point reduction. Each subsequent absence will result in 10 points being deducted from this portion of your final grade. Three tardies and/or early departures constitute one absence. More than 20 minutes late is equal to an absence. 2. Four WRITTEN EXAMINATIONS will constitute 30% OF FINAL GRADE (300 points). These written exams will evaluate the knowledge you have gained from material presented in class and from the text. The highest point value for each exam is 100 points. Each exam will have a review for the exam. The lowest test grade will be dropped and the final will be comprehensive. 3. PHYSICAL FITNESS will constitute 10% OF FINAL GRADE (100 points). Fitness scores will be based on your FINAL General Fitness Assessment (GFA). Each of the following four components will be rated based on your final performance: CRE, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility. 4. WELLNESS PORTFOLIO ASSIGNMENTS will constitute 30% of FINAL GRADE (300 points). There will be multiple assignments during the semester that will comprise the Wellness Portfolio. They will relate to nutrition, exercise prescription, stress management, as well as other aspects of wellness. These will be discussed further in class. 5. FINAL GRADE DETERMINATION points= A = B = C = D <595 = F DROP/WITHDRAWAL POLICY: Withdrawing from a course is a formal procedure which YOU must initiate; the instructor cannot do it for you. You may do this in Admissions or Counseling. If you stop attending class and do not withdraw, you will receive a performance grade, which can result in an F. Students sometimes drop courses when help is available that would enable them to continue. Please discuss your plans with the instructor if you feel the need to withdraw. INTERNAL TRANSFER: A credit student may transfer to non-credit status after the refund period and on or before the final drop date of the semester. No student will be permitted to transfer after that date. Please consult with your instructor if you wish to utilize this transfer process. RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS: A student shall be excused from attending classes, or other required activities,

5 including examinations, for the observance of a religious holy day, including travel for that purpose. A student whose absence is excused under this provision may not be penalized for that absence and shall be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment within a reasonable time after the absence. A religious holy day means a holy day observed by a religion whose places of worship are exempt from property taxation under Section 11.20, Tax Code. A student who is excused under this section may not be penalized for the absence, but the instructor may appropriately respond if the student fails to satisfactorily complete the assignment or examination. Such an environment presupposes both rights and responsibilities. Disciplinary regulations at the college are set forth in writing in order to give students general notice of prohibited conduct. Students should be aware of disciplinary actions for all forms of academic dishonesty, including cheating, fabrication, facilitating academic dishonesty, plagiarism and collusion. FINANCIAL AID STATEMENT: Students who are receiving any form of financial aid should check with the Financial Aid Office prior to withdrawing from classes. Withdrawals may affect your eligibility to receive further aid and could cause you to be in a position of repayment for the current semester. Students who fail to attend or participate after the drop date are also subject to this policy. Please note: If you are receiving Financial Aid grants or loans, you must begin attendance in all classes before the certification date. You also must attend or participate after the drop date in order not to be marked as non-attending in the event that you fail the course. Do not drop or stop attending any class without consulting the Financial Aid Office. Changes in your enrollment level and failing grades may require that you repay financial aid. By Texas law, students may drop only six classes during their undergraduate career. IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING DROPPED COURSES: Section of the Texas Education Code applies to students who enroll in a Texas public institution of higher education for the first time in fall 2007 or later. This includes dual credit and Early College High School students. Based on this law, DCCCD or any other Texas public institution of higher education may not permit a student to drop more than six courses during their entire undergraduate career. All courses dropped after the official drop and add period for the course are included in the six-course limit, including courses dropped at another Texas public institution of higher education, unless it qualifies as an exception. Contact your college s counseling/advising office for further details related to exceptions. Policies and procedures for implementation of this law will be developed and published as soon as the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board finalizes its rules associated with this statute. Students affected by this law who plan to attend another institution of higher education should become familiar with the institution s policies on dropping courses.
