1 10 GOOD REASONS WHY STUDENTS OWE IT TO THEMSELVES TO SHAPE UP TUTOR GUIDE THE BACKGROUND Science has now proved that getting and staying fit is an essential part of living a longer, happier, more successful life. In a health sense being fit looks after your immune system and helps prevent all sorts of potential problems long-term. In a student sense being fit and participating in activities and sport is good for everything from academic performance, through self-esteem and body image, to career and life prospects. THE BIG PROBLEM Ask most kids at primary school what their favourite lesson is and they ll reply PE. But by the age of 16 young people start abandoning exercise and sport. Back in the day many would have been leaving school at this age and going and doing quite physical jobs they stayed naturally fit. Modern living is altogether more sedentary, We have even stopped walking and cycling to get around. According to Dr William Bird MBE lack of exercise has reached epidemic proportions amongst teenagers. ZERO TOLERANCE FOR OSTEOPOROSIS Girls and female teachers under the age of 30, should be aware of this increasing problem. The Prognosis for girls is particularly bad exercise builds bone density which helps combat osteoporosis, the so called Whispering Death. Statistics show that 50% of women suffer from osteoporosis at the age of 50. In the UK over 14,000 people die every year from the complications of a broken hip due to the disease that s 1 every 20 minutes. New research shows that girls of 16 who do not exercise already have a 12% depletion in bone density. TUTORIAL TIPS Ask if the group can give you 10 reasons why it s important to be active and stay fit - normally even those who participate in sport won t be able to. In most groups there will be some sporty ones and more non-sporty ones. It s important to establish that this isn t about competitive team sport it s about looking after your body. That includes dancing, walking to college, walking the dog, playing table tennis with your friends, discovering the gym, doing a workout video at home. But it s also about exam performance, skin, body image, self-esteem, your UCAS form and heaps of other things. THREE BIG END POINTS 1. It s never easier to be active than when you re at college or Uni 2. So it makes sense to make sure you re healthy and fit it gives you a competitive advantage 3. So what will you do about it? THE BIG ASK THE IMPORTANT GOAL IS TO COMPLETE 30 MINUTES OF ACTIVITY 5 TIMES A WEEK
