This is a 90-minute small group course focused on educating people new to barbell training on how to safely and efficiently train with free weights and barbells. Students will learn how to properly plan and organize a personalized strength training program for 6 weeks, as well as the ins and outs of the foundational barbell lifts, tips and tricks to get the most out of their training program, and develop skills needed for life long success under the bar. No previous experience needed. Class taught by experienced Strength Coach, certified as a United States Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach. All this for less than $10 per class! 3 Tai Chi (Adults 16 years & older) #31463 Fee: $90 Saturdays, 11:30 am-12:25 pm, WLA B115, 9/9-12/2, (12 wks.) Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art approximately 1,000 years old. It will be taught as an exercise that promotes whole body health. It consists of a series of slow, graceful movements that combine into what is known as the form. Tai Chi is practiced daily by millions of people all over the world. People of all ages can benefit from daily practice. Instructor: Martha Lois (new instructor) Qigong (Adults 16 years & older) #31464 Fee: $90, Saturdays, 12:30-1:25 pm, WLA B115, 9/9-12/2, (12 wks.) Qigong (Chi Kung) consists of self-healing techniques developed in China thousands of years ago. These healing practices combine the use of breathing, sound, movement and mind which, when practiced daily, may prevent illness, strengthen organs and help one regain vitality after an illness. Beginning golf emphasizes proper grip, stance, swing, proper club selection, shot making and etiquette. Additional expenses for bucket of balls and for green fees. Please join us for an invigorating hour of walking, stretching and core work! Instruction will focus on correct stretches to perform before and after walking, practice core strengthening, suggestions on proper foot attire and much more! This class will partner with the Recreation Department to achieve the 50 Mile Walk challenge. Equipment needed: Good walking shoes and a SMILE! Cardio Cycling is riding indoor stationary bikes in an organized setting. This class will begin with a gentle warm up and gradually include simulation of going up and down hills, time intervals, resistance, and cool down. Participants can make this class as easy or as difficult as they desire by adjusting the resistance knobs. A variety of music is played for appropriate type of workout. Aquatic Kickboxing incorporates the traditional kickboxing moves, adapted for the water. Swimming skills are not required. This class will utilize both ends of the pool so you must be comfortable in deep water. This is a fun, energetic and challenging class that can be adjusted for all fitness levels! This course is designed to promote health, physical fitness and recreational activities in the aquatic medium. Activities to suit both swimmers and non-swimmers. Emphasis on water exercises. Instructor: Rose Steinke Water Fitness (Adults 16 years & older) #31476 Fee: $165 Mon. & Wed., 6:30-7:25 pm, WRC Pool, 9/6-11/27, (12 wks.) Water Fitness is for both swimmers and non-swimmers. Water walking and aqua jogging plus shallow and deep water exercises will be taught. This total water fitness class will provide cardiovascular exercises, muscle toning and strengthening. Swim belts, gloves & ankle weights will be provided. Additional water equipment such as barbells, kickboards, hand paddles, noodles, etc. will also be used. It is a fun-filled exercise class performed in the shallow end of the pool, integrating Latin dance steps and aerobic exercise to Latin music! If you ve ever taken a Zumba class and felt it was too challenging, this class is perfect for you! Let s dance to fitness! Total body workout program plus shallow to deep water jogging with belts. Great exercise program for those who have joint problems. You do not need to know how to swim to participate in this class. This course is designed to provide cardiovascular exercises, muscle toning, strengthening, and flexibility in deep water. This is a great exercise program. If not comfortable in deep water, swim belts will be provided. This course is designed to provide cardiovascular exercises, muscle toning, strengthening, and flexibility in the shallow water. Great way to work out if not comfortable in the deep water. 5 Learn to Swim Program These programs will follow the guidelines stated by the American Red Cross and taught by certified instructors. Safe water skills are incorporated into each session. Parent/Child Aquatics (Ages 6 months to 3 years) #31469 Fee: $66 Tuesdays, 6-6:30 pm WRC Pool, 9/5-11/21, (12 wks.) Basic water safety skills for both parents and children, as well as learning how to effectively acclimate your child to the water, will be taught. Safety topics will be discussed and demonstrated. Parents must participate! Only register your child. 30-minute class. Maximum of 15 students. Instructor: Lynn Bauerschmidt Introduction to Water Skills & Fundamentals (Minimum age is 4 years old) #31470 Fee: $68 Tuesdays, 6:30-7:15 pm, WRC Pool 9/5-11/21, (12 wks.) This class will help students feel comfortable in the water, learning breath control, buoyancy and treading water with support. In addition, students will learn to be able to swim underwater and swim unsupported on front, back and side. Exit skill assessment. 45-minute class. Maximum of 10 students. Instructors: Yevhen Voronyuk Youth Swim Levels 3 & 4- NEW (Minimum age is 4 years old) #31520 Fee: $68 Tuesdays, 6:30-7:15 pm, WRC Pool 9/5-11/21, (12 wks.) This class will build on skills developed in the Introduction to Water Skills & Fundamentals class. Exit skill assessment. 45-minute class. Maximum of 10 students. Instructor: Lynn Bauerschmidt Adult Learn to Swim- NEW (Minimum age is 16 years old) #31478 Fee: $90 Mondays, 5:30-6:25 pm, WRC Pool 9/11-11/27, (12 wks.) Adult Learn To Swim is designed for people with little or no water experience. Class will help to provide an understanding of the basic skills required for swimming such as floating, kicking and breathing. The goal of this course is to get non-swimmers over their water fears, and swim at least half a lap using a proficient freestyle and or backstroke by the end of the course. Maximum of 15 students. 6 Private Lessons *For all private lessons: After registering, please call the Recreation Department at to set up a day and time for your private lessons. *Please Note: All personal training sessions are to be completed between 9/5 & 10/22 and 10/23 & 12/17. Wellness Coaching- NEW This is a one-on-one session with a certified wellness coach who works with you to create a wellness vision of how you want to be your best self. Then through conversation and planning long term and short term goals are set. During the weekly 60-minute sessions the goals are reviewed and new ones are set to keep you moving forward in health and wellness; initial meeting is 90 minutes. This is NOT personal training but coaching to support healthy behavior change. 7 Cuyahoga Community College Cancellation & Refund Policy Cancellations: You will be contacted by the Recreation Department if a class has been cancelled. Please make certain that, when registering, you include your current phone number or address. Refunds: Please contact the Continuing Education Department at (216) if you wish to withdraw from a class. You will receive a 100% refund, minus the 2.4% non-refundable service charge, if the college cancels a course or you withdraw one or more weeks before the class starts. An 80% refund, minus the 2.4% non-refundable service charge, applies if you withdraw after the first class and before the second class. No refund applies after the second class session. Community Membership The Community Membership Program is only available at the Metropolitan, Eastern, and Western Campuses. The membership gains you access to resources along with discounts on services and events, including the Recreation Centers. Memberships are non-transferable and non-refundable, and members must be 18 years of age or older to enroll, and they must present their IDs to obtain discounts. The membership can be purchased for $100 annually at the Metropolitan, Eastern, and Western Campus Enrollment Centers. Program 60 Through program 60, residents of Ohio aged 60 and older may register for regularly scheduled credit and non-credit classes on a non-credit, tuition-free, space-available basis. *Please Note: Program 60 does not apply to Private Lessons.
