2 Assignment Brief Centre no Qualification Unit 2 Start 8/3/13 Deadline 21/3/13 Assessor E Williams Assignment Title The Physiology of Fitness (P1, P2, M1) The purpose of this assignment is to: Investigate the body s response to acute exercise Scenario: Having gained a placement with a Health Fitness instructor, you will need to apply your anatomical and physiological knowledge to the practical activities and exercises. You will conduct practical assessments and explore how the body responds to exercise and physical activity. Task: Criteria Evidence 1. Either in a written report or in a discussion with your teacher: Research the musculoskeletal and energy system, and how it responds to a single bout of exercise. Include the following information: Increased blood supply, including micro tears. Increase in muscle pliability; increased range of movement. Energy systems: phosphocreatine; lactic acid; aerobic; energy continuum; remember to state how the energy systems contribute to exercise, as the exercise continues for a period of 30mins. 2. Either in a written report or in a discussion with your teacher. Research the cardiovascular and respiratory system and how they respond to a single bout of exercise. Include the following information: heart rate anticipatory response; activity response; increased blood pressure; vasoconstriction, vasodilatation. Respiratory system: increase in breathing rate (neural and chemical control), increased tidal volume. Remember to state how the cardiovascular and respiratory responds to exercise, as the exercise continues for a period of 30mins. Including the pre-exercise effects which occur in the heart 3. Explain the responses musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and respiratory systems have to exercise. Include: How the muscle responds to a single bout of exercise (blood supply and effects of resistance exercises including micro tears). Ensure you give reasons and provide the physiological evidence (collected in class) to clearly support your answer. Include: Hypertrophy, increase in tendon strength, increase in myoglobin stores, increased number of mitochondria, increased storage of glycogen & fat, increased muscle strength, increased tolerance to lactic acid. Skeletal system: increase in bone calcium store; increased stretch in ligaments; increased thickness of hyaline cartilage; increased produced of synovial fluid. Energy: Increased aerobic and anaerobic enzymes, increase use of fats as an energy source. 2. Either in a written report or in a discussion with your teacher. Describe the cardiovascular and respiratory systems response to long term exercise. Include: Cardiac hypertrophy, increase in stroke volume, increase in cardiac output, and decrease in resting heart rate, capillarisation, increased in blood volume, reduction in resting blood pressure, decreased recovery time and increased aerobic fitness. Respiratory: increased vital capacity, increase in minute ventilation, increased strength of respiratory muscles, and increase in oxygen diffusion rate. 3. During your practical lessons, you will work as a class to compile a 6 week training programme. You must include practical activities to show the adaptations of the cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal and energy systems to long term exercise. You will conduct practical assessments and explore how the body responds to exercise and physical activity. Task: Criteria Evidence 1. In a practical lesson, collect data from two different types of exercise to determine how different exercise effect the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory and energy systems, from the acute response to the long term effects of exercises. Your data should be recorded pre, during and post exercise e.g. resting heart rate. P5 Data collection sheet As with P5, but very limited teaching support. This will link P5 & M3. You must independently conduct the investigate (with no teacher support) M3 D1 2. Either in a written report or in a discussion with your teacher. Review the results collected by describing how the body responds to each type of exercise during the acute phases and the long term effects. Review the physiological data you gathered in P5 for the two exercises selected. Review the advantages and disadvantages encountered during data collection and describe the strengths and areas for improvement of the investigation. If you can explain your points, you will gain a merit. (As with P6, but very limited teaching support) 3. Links with P6/M4. The analysis needs to include the practicality of the exercise activities selected and also the advantages/disadvantages you encountered with the way in which physiological data was collected.
