1 Risk Management & Insurance Ergonomics Program Fort Collins, CO (970) FAX: (970) Job Site Analysis (JSA) Date of JSA: 11/15/10 Name: Amy Job Title: Coordinator Reason for JSA: Preventative Phone Number: 491- Location: A205E Engineering Supervisor: Tom JSA Performed By: Frank Gonzales, CEES, CEAS Problem/Concerns/Complaint: The analysis performed was done so in order to determine risk factors for cumulative trauma disorders (CTD) (also called musculoskeletal disorders MSD) and to reduce or eliminate those risk factors which the current workstation or job tasks performed may present. Amy is experiencing pain in her neck, shoulder and eyes (headaches) at the time of the evaluation which she first noticed in She feels the problem may be caused by stress/tension and poor ergonomics. She has received treatment for her discomfort to this point and without the appropriate changes; discomfort may continue and lead to injury requiring further and more extensive medical treatment and possibly time away from work. Overall Amy has a decent workstation setup although there are a few areas of concern and areas which could use modifications in order to reduce the injury risk and possible causes of discomfort. With the appropriate changes to the workstation as well as the implementation of new ergonomic products which will be discussed below, Amy may see a reduction of discomfort. The appropriate changes will also help reduce exposure to injury risk factors which can eventually lead to a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD). The emphasis of the ergonomic evaluation or JSA is to try and reduce discomfort and injury risk by allowing Amy to sit as close to neutral posture as possible by making the appropriate workstation modifications. This will not only include changes to the workstation but to work habits as well (if it is deemed necessary). Neutral posture is the position/posture which is recommended that all individuals use when sitting and working on a computer or in an office environment. This posture is one that places the least amount of stress on the joints and muscles and reduces fatigue and strain on the body. Neutral posture also places an individual at the lowest risk for injury. During the evaluation exposure to injury all apparent risk factors are identified and recommendations are made to reduce or A Division of University Operations

2 eliminate exposure to injury risk factors as much as possible in order to allow Amy to work as close to neutral posture as possible. Recommended changes to work habits, work arrangement and overall workstation setup, etc, will be discussed further in this report. Type of Work includes: Office/computer related Work Hours: 8-5 M-F (1 month at CSU) Essential Functions: Computer Keyboard Mouse Phone Reading other than computer screen Referring from documents/data entry Writing Meetings 6.5 hours/day 6.5 hours/day 6.5 hours/day Duties listed are Amy best estimate of tasks performed on a daily basis. Not all job tasks may be listed. The functions listed above are done so in order to show duration of certain tasks. Tasks which are performed frequently and for extended durations can greatly increase the risk for experiencing an MSD. If other injury risk factors (force, contact stress, awkward posture, lack of recovery, etc) are also involved, this only increases the concern and risk that an injury may occur. Other tasks, although they may not be performed frequently and for extended durations can still create a substantial risk for experiencing an MSD. 3 Risk Factors that contribute to musculoskeletal disorders: Awkward postures/force/contact Stress/Repetitions (These injury risk factors in addition to others not listed will be identified as best as possible during the JSA. If injury risks are identified during the JSA they will be discussed below and corrected as best as possible. Recommendations to correct the problem(s) will also be discussed.) Desk surface too high forcing the keyboard and mouse too high. This causes awkward postures which may be a main contributor to discomfort. Poor chair being used, lacking adjustments, comfort and proper support for the back. The chair height is also too high which increases strain on the legs and hips and does not allow Amy s feet to touch the ground. The height at which the chair is placed is due to the high desk surface. Contract stress between wrists/forearms and desk edge Slight ulnar deviation (bending wrists toward pinkie finger) when typing. The monitor height is slightly high which causes awkward neck postures. When the chair height is lowered correctly, this will affect the monitor height more so. Other risk factors were not identified at the time of the JSA however may present themselves in the future at which point Ergonomics staff should be contacted for further help and evaluation to find an effective solution in minimizing or eliminating those risk factors. Recommendations (below recommendations are not mandatory however should be seriously considered): Purchase a new chair with proper support and adjustments. This will allow for better posture and increased lower back support. To avoid contact stress between the elbows and the arm rests of the chair, purchase gel chair arm rest supports as shown below. Purchase a height adjustable keyboard tray (as shown below). This will allow Amy to raise and lower the height of the keyboard and mouse appropriately in order to reduce awkward postures and discomfort and sit in the recommended neutral posture as shown below. o It is recommended that the keyboard and mouse are placed at the same height and orientation and when typing or using the mouse the elbows should remain

4 as close to the body as possible, in 90 degree angles with the shoulders relaxed and the forearms parallel to the ground, while sitting back completely in the chair. This position is the most comfortable and ergonomically correct position that will help avoid pain and potential injuries Try alternative ergonomic keyboards to help maintain neutral wrist position when typing. The ergonomic keyboard as shown below has a built in wrist rest which will help prevent contact stress and awkward hand/wrist postures. Concentrate on keeping the shoulders back and elbows close to the torso when typing. Lower the monitor to avoid awkward neck postures. This may require a new monitor given the current monitor does not adjust in height. Move most frequently used items as close to the body as possible to avoid constant reaching throughout the day. The phone, pens, pencils, staplers and other items used on a regular basis should be well organized so that the extended reach does not occur with great repetitions during the day. (This was done at the time of the JSA.) Maintain proper positioning when seated at the computer and concentrate on sitting back as far as she can in the chair. Avoid twisting and turning when doing paper work or performing writing tasks. This was reviewed with Amy at the time of the JSA. Take frequent breaks during the day away from the computer (at least one 5-minute break per hour). Sitting for too long can cause a problem because of the static posture being maintained. Sitting for long periods of time increases fatigue and strain on the body and does not allow for good movement of blood and oxygen to the tissues. Without adequate blood flow the body does not get the repairs it needs and when it is excessively damaged due to a number of issues (one issue being static posture) injuries can arise over time. This is one of the most important issues in office ergonomics. Even with a perfect workstation setup, static loads can take a toll on the body and it is crucial to get up and move around; get away from the computer. Perform stretches and exercises recommended by a physician or use the examples available on the website. These are several options that could be utilized to improve task efficiency and reduce musculoskeletal injury risk factors. It may be necessary to discuss other options depending on department needs and feasibility. Amy is recommended to try and/or purchase the equipment below and can also be found at the following website. Stretches and other ergonomic information can also be found at the website. The items shown below are examples of equipment being recommended for implementation but may not be the final product. CSU has a contract with certain vendors listed however alternative products can be researched and purchased if desired and assuming a contract does not exist with another vendor. However, the products shown below are of high quality and unless a specific item is desired the items being shown should be sufficient. Please contact EHS for more help with equipment and purchase if needed. Most vendors can take an order directly over the phone and can be called at the 800 number shown below. Not all items recommended may be shown below and additional equipment needs may arise in the future.

6 After interviewing Amy and observing her at work the above recommendations were made. These recommendations may help reduce current strain being experienced by Amy. These changes may also help prevent further aggravation of symptoms, as well as, promote a stronger recovery. When discussing the changes with Amy she appeared to be very open to trying out possible solutions. The above recommendations should provide Amy with an upgraded workstation while helping increase her productivity and efficiency in addition to lowering her injury risk.
