Acupuncture in the Chiropractic Practice

Define and describe Shen and its role in health and the five element system Identify common conditions in which Shen plays an important role Explore acupuncture treatment protocols for addressing common Shen-related presentations in the chiropractic clinic

Straight from Giovanni Maciocia: The word "Shen" can be translated in many different ways From a grammatical point of view, it can be a noun, adjective or verb. Mind Spirit Consciousness Vitality Expression Soul Energy God

The shen resides in the heart Heart and mind can be used somewhat interchangeably in TCM The eyes are the windows to the shen We assess shen very quickly by seeing how bright the eyes are

Thanks to Maciociaonline

In all three philosophies (Daoism, Confusionism, and Buddhism), all emotions are thought to disturb the placid pond of the shen This is due to the tendency toward excess in emotions Even joy is considered disruptive to shen This is the concept of overstimulation In the west, our entire lives are often built of overstimulation!

The ability to reach out and connect The Shen reflects the human need for connection When we see healthy Shen, we see a person able to connect fully with the world around them

Disturbed Shen looks like stress-related conditions Irritable Bowel Syndrome/Bowel Disease Migraine Tension headache Anxiety/depression Chronic pain SO many more!

Du 24: Courtyard of the Spirit GB 13: Shen Root Ht 7: Spirit Gate Ren 17: Chest Center Ren 6: Sea of Qi

24 year old male Chronic digestive distress, tends toward loose stool but can occasionally be constipated as well Symptoms have been there forever Aggravated by stress

TCM diagnosis: Spleen qi deficiency with liver invading spleen Tongue: pale, puffy; Pulse: empty, soft, wiry Wood attacking Earth Treatment strategy: Tonify spleen qi; smooth liver qi Sp 6, St 36, Ren 12, Bl 18, Bl 20, Liv 2 or 3 ADD some points to calm and nourish the Shen Du 24, GB 13, Ht 7, Ren 17, Ren 6

Unbalanced diet Too much raw food Irregular eating Rushed eating Eating while upset Working/studying late into the evening Overthinking, rumination, pensiveness

42 year old female Unilateral episodic headache Photo/phonophobia Self-limiting in nature Symptoms began with menses Aggravated by stress

TCM diagnosis: Kidney yin deficiency/liver blood deficiency Tongue: red, without coat; Pulse: thin Treatment strategy: Tonify spleen qi; smooth liver qi Kidney 3, Ren 4, GB 20, St 36, Ren 12, Bl 17, Bl 18, Bl 23, Liv 2 or 3, GB 40 ADD some points to calm and nourish the Shen Du 24, GB 13, Ht 7, Ren 17, Ren 6 NOTE: We generally don t needle the head in migraine headache Strategy is to draw energy down and anchor it

Unbalanced diet Irregular eating Overwork Insufficient rest Blood deficiency (heavy period, severe illness, pregnancy/childbirth/nursing

11 year old female Bilateral ear pain of insidious onset Began one day while swimming Pain is constant but worse with swimming 5 months duration with no relief Has seen multiple specialists with no diagnosis

TCM diagnosis: Blood deficiency OR stasis Qi deficiency OR stagnation Channel obstruction Treatment strategy: Build and move qi and blood 4 Gates, St 36, Ren 12, Lu 7 ADD some points to calm and nourish the Shen Du 24, GB 13, Ht 7, Ren 17, Ren 6

Could be the difference between making your treatment effective or not Gauge the constitution of your patient Deficient/depleted? Robust or excess? Ensure your patient is warm and comfortable enough to relax fully!

One size does not fit all For adults, allow 25-30m Some with a strong constitution can tolerate longer Kids can have brief treatments Seconds for babies 10-15m for preteens If an adult can t tolerate 25-30m, then you can augment intensity
