Consumer Medicine Information DICLAX SR Diclofenac Sodium modified release 75 mg SR tablets 100 mg SR tablets What is in this leaflet Please read this leaflet carefully before you start using DICLAX SR. This leaflet answers some common questions about DICLAX SR. It does not contain all the available information. It does not take the place of talking to your doctor or pharmacist. All medicines have risks and benefits. Your doctor has weighed the risks of you using DICLAX SR against the benefits they expect it will have for you. If you have any concerns about using this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Keep this leaflet with the medicine. You may need to read it again. What DICLAX SR is used for DICLAX SR reduces inflammation (redness and swelling) and relieves pain and that may occur in the following: different types of arthritis including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and back pain other painful conditions where swelling is a problem for example following a dental or orthopaedic surgery. menstrual cramps (period pain) DICLAX SR tablets contain the active ingredient diclofenac. Diclofenac belongs to a family of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These medicines relieve the symptoms of pain and inflammation. They do not cure your condition. Your doctor may have prescribed DICLAX SR for another use. Ask your doctor if you have any questions about why DICLAX SR has been prescribed for you. This medicine is available only with a doctor s prescription. It is not addictive. Before you take DICLAX SR When you must not take it Do not take DICLAX SR if you have an allergy to: diclofenac, the active ingredient in DICLAX SR, or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in Product description at the end of this leaflet). other medicines containing diclofenac aspirin/ acetylsalicylic acid, other NSAIDs or any other pain relief medicines (such as ibuprofen or diclofenac). Many medicines used to treat headache, period pain and other aches and pains contain aspirin or NSAID medicines. If you are not sure if you are taking any of these medicines, ask your pharmacist. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to NSAIDs may include: Asthma, wheezing, shortness of breath, swelling of the face, lips or tongue which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing, hives, itching or skin rash, fainting. If you are allergic to aspirin or NSAID medicines and take DICLAX SR, these symptoms may be severe.

Do not take DICLAX SR if at the present time you have an ulcer (duodenal or gastric) or bleeding from the stomach or bowel. If you take it, your stomach problem may become worse. Do not take DICLAX SR if you have severe liver disease, kidney disease or severe heart failure DICLAX SR is not recommended for use in children and adolescents below 18 years of age, as there is not enough information on its use in this age group Do not take DICLAX SR after the expiry date (EXP) printed on the pack. It may have no effect at all, or worse, an entirely unexpected effect if you take it after the expiry date. Do not take DICLAX SR if the packaging is torn or shows signs of tampering. If you are not sure whether you should start taking DICLAX SR, contact your doctor. Before you start to take it Tell your doctor if: you are allergic to any other medicines, foods, preservatives or dyes. Your doctor will want to know if you are prone to allergies. in the past, you have ever had: o ulcers (gastric or duodenal) o other stomach trouble including severe attacks of indigestion o diseases of the bowel for example Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis o bleeding from your rectum (back passage) you have any of these health problems/medical conditions at the present time: o established disease of the heart or blood vessels (also called cardiovascular disease, including uncontrolled high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, established ischemic heart disease, or peripheral arterial disease), as treatment with DICLAX SR is generally not recommended. o established cardiovascular disease (see above) or significant risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, abnormally high levels of fat (cholesterol, triglycerides) in your blood, or if you smoke and your doctor decides to prescribe DICLAX SR, the dose must not increase above 100 mg per day if you are treated for more than 4 weeks. It is generally important to take the lowest dose of DICLAX SR that relieves your pain and/or swelling and for the shortest time possible in order to keep your risk for cardiovascular side effects as small as possible. o kidney disease o liver disease o a tendency to bleed o asthma, seasonal allergic rhinitis, swelling of the nasal mucosa (nasal polyps), chronic lung diseases or infections of the respiratory tract. o haemorrhoids (piles) or irritation of the rectum (back passage) Your doctor may want to take special precautions if you have any of these conditions. Tell your doctor if you have an infection at the present time. If you take DICLAX SR while you have an infection, some of the signs of the infection may be hidden for example redness, pain, swelling or fever. You may think, mistakenly, that you are better or that the infection is not serious. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant. Like most NSAID medicines, DICLAX SR is not

recommended for use during pregnancy. Your doctor will discuss with you the benefits and risks of taking DICLAX SR Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding or intend to breast-feed. DICLAX SR passes into breast milk. Like most NSAID medicines, DICLAX SR is not recommended for use during breastfeeding. Your doctor will discuss with you the benefits and risks of taking DICLAX SR. If you have not told your doctor about any of the above, tell them before you start taking DICLAX SR. Taking other medicines Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, including medicines that you buy without a prescription from your pharmacy, supermarket or health food shop. You should also tell any health professional who is prescribing a new medication for you that you are taking DICLAX SR. Some medicines may interfere with DICLAX SR. These include: Medicines used to treat heart conditions or high blood pressure, for example beta blockers or ACE inhibitors Corticosteroids, medicine used to provide relief for inflamed areas of the body. Sulfinpyrazone, a medicine used to treat gout Phenytoin, a medicine used to treat fits/seizures. Rifampicin, an antibiotic medicine used to treat bacterial infections Medicines known as SSRIs (used to treat mental disorders such as depression) Vericonazole, a medicine used to treat fungal infections These medicines may be affected by DICLAX SR, or may affect how well it works. You may need different amounts of your medicine, or you may need to take different medicines. Your doctor or pharmacist has more information on medicines to be careful with or avoid while taking DICLAX SR How to take DICLAX SR Aspirin, salicylates, other antiinflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen medicines used to stop blood clots such as warfarin medicines to treat heart conditions such as digoxin lithium, a medicine used to treat some types of depression diuretics, also called fluid or water tablets tablets used to treat diabetes such as metformin methotrexate, a medicine used to treat arthritis and some cancers cyclosporine or tacrolimus, medicines used to suppress the immune system trimethoprim, a medicine used to prevent or treat urinary tract infections certain class of antibiotics called quinolones How much to take Take DICLAX SR exactly as your doctor has prescribed. Your doctor will tell you how many DICLAX SR tablets to take each day. Your doctor will assess your condition and the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible duration will be prescribed. DICLAX SR comes in 75 mg tablets and 100 mg slow release tablets. Adults The usual daily dose of DICLAX SR tablets is 75 mg to 150 mg. Children and Adolescents DICLAX SR is not suitable for children or adolescents.

How to take it DICLAX SR tablets should be swallowed whole with liquid preferably after meals. Do NOT crush or chew the tablets as that will destroy the special coating of the tablet (tablets have special coating to stop them dissolving until they have passed through the stomach into the bowel) How long to take it Do not take DICLAX SR for longer than your doctor says. Taking DICLAX SR for arthritis will not cure your condition but it should help to control pain and inflammation. It usually starts working within a few hours and a full effect reached after several weeks. Taking DICLAX SR for period pain is usually only needed as soon as period pains begin at the beginning of each menstrual cycle and continued for a few days until the pain stops. If you take DICLAX SR for more than a few weeks, you should make sure to visit your doctor for regular check-ups, to ensure that you are not suffering from unnoticed unwanted effects. Ask your doctor if you are not sure how long to take DICLAX SR for. If you forget to take it If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when you are meant to. Otherwise, take it as soon as you remember and then continue taking it as you would normally. Do not take a double dose to make up for the one that you missed. If you have trouble remembering your dose or you are not sure what to do, ask your pharmacist for some hints. While you are taking DICLAX SR Things you must do If you become pregnant while taking DICLAX SR, tell your doctor immediately. Ask your doctor and pharmacist before you start taking any new medicines. Tell your doctor if, for any reason, you have not taken your medicine exactly as prescribed. Otherwise, your doctor may think that it was not effective and change your treatment unnecessarily. Tell your doctor if you feel the tablets are not helping your condition or your condition is getting worse Ensure you attend all your scheduled doctor s appointments so your progress can be checked. Blood test may be ordered from time to time as this will help to prevent unwanted side effects. Tell your doctor if you have established heart disease or significant risks for heart disease. Your doctor will periodically re-evaluate whether you should continue treatment with DICLAX SR, especially in case you are treated for more than 4 weeks. If, at any time while taking DICLAX SR you experience any signs or symptoms of problems with your blood vessels or heart such as chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurring of speech, contact your doctor immediately. If you are going to have surgery, tell your surgeon and anaesthetist you are taking DICLAX SR as NSAIDs can slow down blood clotting. If you get an infection while using DICLAX SR, tell your doctor. DICLAX SR may hide some signs of an infection which may lead you to think, mistakenly, that you are better or that the infection is not serious.

Tell all doctors, dentists and pharmacists who are treating you that you are taking DICLAX SR. Things you must not do Do not take the following medicines while you are taking DICLAX SR without first telling your doctor. Those include: aspirin (also called ASA or acetylsalicylic acid) other salicylates other forms of diclofenac any other NSAID medicine If you take these medicines together with DICLAX SR, they may cause unwanted effects. If you need to take something for headache or fever, it is usually okay to take paracetamol. If you are not sure, your doctor or pharmacist can advise you. Do not stop taking DICLAX SR tablets or change the dose without first checking with your doctor. Do not use DICLAX SR to treat other complaints unless your doctor tells you to. Do not give DICLAX SR to anyone else, even if they have the same condition as you. Things to be careful of Be careful driving or operating machinery until you know how DICLAX SR affects you. As with other NSAID medicines, DICLAX SR may cause dizziness or blurred vision or drowsiness in some people. Make sure you know how you react to DICLAX SR before you drive a car, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous if you are dizzy or light-headed. In case of overdose If you take too much (overdose) If you take too much DICLAX SR, you may experience vomiting, bleeding, diarrhoea, dizziness, ringing in the ears, convulsions (fits). Immediately telephone your doctor or the National Poisons Centre (telephone 0800 POISON or ), or go to accident and emergency at your nearest hospital, if you think that you or anyone else may have taken too much DICLAX SR. Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning. Side effects Tell your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible if you do not feel well while you are taking DICLAX SR. DICLAX SR helps most people with pain due to inflammation, but it may have unwanted side effects in a few people. All medicines can have side effects. Sometimes they are serious, most of the time they are not. You may need medical treatment if you get some of the side effects. The elderly are more likely to get side effects from medicines. If you are over 65 years old, you should be especially careful while taking this medicine. Report any side effects promptly to your doctor Ask your doctor or pharmacist to answer any questions you may have. You may not experience any side effects so do not be alarmed by the list below. Tell your doctor if you notice any other effects. Do not be alarmed by this list of possible adverse effects. You may not experience any of them. After taking DICLAX SR Storage Keep the tablets in the original container in a cool dry place. Do not keep your tablets in the refrigerator. Heat and dampness can destroy some medicines.
