2 The Functions of the Circulatory System Respiration- delivers oxygen to the cells and removing carbon dioxide Nutrition- carries digested food substances to the cells of the body Waste Removal- disposes of waste products and poisons that would harm the body if they accumulated Immunity- helps protect the body from disease Cellular Communication- the circulatory system provides a mode of transport for hormones Thermoregulation- the circulatory system transports heat (can both warm and cool body)

3 What is in the Circulatory System The heart is an amazing organ, it beats about 3 BILLION times during an average life. It is a muscle about the size of your fist. The heart is located in the center of your chest slightly to the left. Its job is to pump blood and keep the blood moving throughout your body. It is your job to keep your heart healthy and there are three main things you need to remember to keep it healthy. 1). Exercise 2). Eat Healthy 3). Don t smoke

4 Blood The blood is an amazing substance that is constantly flowing through our body. your blood is pumped by your heart. Your blood travels through thousands of miles of blood vessels. your blood carries nutrients,water,oxygen and waste products to and from your body. A young person has a gallon of blood. An adult has about 5 quarts. Your blood is not just a red liquid but rather is made up of liquid, Solids and small amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Blood flows up and down

5 Blood cells There are to cells Red Blood cells and Blue Cells. Red Blood cells are responsible for carrying dioxide. They pick up oxygen in the lungs and transport it to all the body cells. After delivering the oxygen to the cells it gathers up the carbon dioxide and transports carbon dioxide back to the lungs where it is removed from the body when we exhale. White blood cells is an important component in our blood system. It helps the body fight off germs. White blood cells attack and destroy germs when they enter the body. When having an infection your body will produce more white blood cells to help fight an infection.

6 Platelets Platelets are blood cells that help stop bleeding. When we get cut we have broken a blood vessel and the blood leaks out. In order to plug up the holes where the blood is leaking from the platelets start to stick to the opening of the damaged blood vessels. As the platelets stick to the opening of the damaged vessel,fibers and other blood cells help to form a plug to seal the broken blood vessel. When the platelet plug is completely formed the wound stops bleeding, we call, it a scab.

7 Plasma Plasma is the liquid Parton the blood. The plasma carries blood cells and other components throughout the body. Plasma is made in the liver.

8 Working with other systems The circulatory system works closely with other systems in our bodies.like for example it supplies oxygen and nutrients to our bodies by working with the respiratory system. Another system is the urinary system. It happens in the kidneys, blood from your heart goes to the kidneys through the aorta. The kidneys dieter the blood and then sends it back to the heart in a vein called the vena cava. The digestive system is another connection to the circulatory system. In the small intestines, the nutrients are absorbed from the bonus using the villi. The nutrients go into the blood stream and is then, transported around the body.

Then goes through the pulmonary value into the pulmonary artery 5). Enters the lungs 6). Passes through the left atrium 7). Goes into the left ventricle 8). Gets into the aorta 9). Enters the rest of the body The Path That Blood Takes Superior Vena Cava- vein which returns blood to the heart from the head, neck, and both upper limbs Inferior Vena Caraa vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the lower body to the heart Aorta- the main artery of the body, supplying oxygenated blood to the circulatory system

Artery-a vessel that carries blood high in oxygen content away from the heart to the farthest reaches of the body. Vein- a blood vessel that carries blood that is low in oxygen content from the body back to the heart. Capillaries- distribute oxygenated blood from the arteries to the tissues of the body and to feed deoxygenated blood from the tissues back to into the veins.
