16 CHF is an abbreviation for Congestive Heart Failure. It is a condition in which the heart muscle becomes weaker than normal and is unable to pump enough oxygen filled blood to the rest of the body. This inefficient pumping causes blood and fluid to back up into the lungs and extremities. v

17 Shortness of breath with exertion or even when lying down flat Exercise intolerance, Tiredness Weight gain with swelling in the stomach, legs and feet Chest congestion v

18 ACE Inhibitors work by dilating blood vessels. Examples are Captopril, Lisinopril and Elalapril. Beta Blockers work by relaxing the blood vessels and heart and decreasing the stress on the heart. Examples are Coreg and Metoprolol. v

19 Diuretics are water pills that help your produce more urine which decreases the amount of fluid your heart must pump. Examples are Lasix, Bumex and HCTZ. Potassium Supplements potassium helps control your heart rhythm and some diuretics cause your body to lose potassium, so it is necessary to supplement with a pill. Example is K-dur. Aldosterone Antagonists are hormone blockers that help treat blood pressure and CHF. Examples are Aldactone and Spironolactone. v

20 In order to reduce your symptoms, it may be necessary to adjust your diet. There are several important changes that can be made that will greatly reduce your risk of increased problems from your CHF. Sodium restriction, fluid restriction, and adequate potassium intake will help improve your daily life and help stop the progression of your disease. Read your food labels! v

21 Reduce your sodium intake Salt attracts water, so it is very important to reduce your salt intake so that you reduce the amount of fluid your body holds on to. The American Heart Association recommends that you consume less than 1500mg sodium daily. v

23 Reduce your fluid intake- It is necessary to reduce the amount of fluid you drink because your heart is unable to efficiently pump and move that fluid, which leads to a backup of fluid in the legs, abdomen and lungs. It is recommended that you not consume more than 8 cups or 64 oz of fluid daily. 1 cup = 8 oz = 240 cc 4 cups = 32 oz = 1 qt = 1000 cc = 1 liter 8 cups = 64 oz = 2 qts = 2000 cc = 2 liters All fluid you drink counts as does any food that becomes a fluid when it melts (ie yogurt, pudding, jello) Notes: v
