13 What does AED stand for? Chapter 5 AED AED s the chance of survival from cardiac death! How the heart works The heart is a M The heart has chambers A sends electrical impulses; heart muscle contracts The heart has a normal sinus rhythm When heart rhythm is interrupted it causes sudden arrest. Two types of electrical interruptions: Ventricular fibrillation (v-fib) Ventricular Tachycardia (v-tach) electrical activity is c. Very r electrical activity
14 ***ALWAYS PROVIDE UNTIL THE DEFIBRILLATOR IS AVAILABLE**** AED CHARACTERISTICS Analyzes the heart r Determines and advises the need to s Delivers electrical s to a victim in c arrest. Can reestablish the heart rhythm and will generate a pulse AED S have many common elements On/off button Cables and pads (e ) Analysis capability D capability Prompts to guide the user Battery operated
15 How to use the AED 1. Turn unit on 2. Apply AED pads to bare, d chest 3. Make sure cables are attached to the AED 4. Turn unit o 5. Stand C and let AED analyze the heart rhythm 6. Deliver a s if indicated 7. Perform C for 2 minutes 8. Repeat Analysis 9. Repeat S and C if needed SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS Water remove victim from water and d the chest Children/Infants Use pediatric P Medication Patches Remove patches and w Skin Implanted Devices Avoid putting electrodes over Pacemakers
