1 Program Details The Louisville Symposium on Heart Disease in Women: Update on Treatment and Prevention is a oneday conference to address current guidelines and trends in the field of cardiovascular medicine especially as it relates to: Ischemic heart disease Valvular heart disease Heart failure Arrhythmias Congenital heart disease in the adult Cardiac imaging and diagnostics Therapeutic dilemmas in cardiovascular management in women The conference is designed to provide physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and the community with up-to-date information pertaining to the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease in women. Overview Cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart disease, hypertension, and stroke, is the number one killer of women in the United States. Long thought to be a disease primarily affecting men, CVD kills more women than men on an annual basis. In fact, more than 1 in 3 female adults has some form of CVD. Although heart disease is a multifactorial, complex disorder, it is preventable. Both patient and professional education about the prevention, recognition, and treatment of heart disease in women is essential and must be promoted across all health care disciplines encountering women in their practice. Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this symposium the participants should be able to: Identify emerging controversies in cardiovascular disease and treatments Apply current guidelines in the medical management of heart disease in women Review cardiac risk factors in women and opportunities for implementing new prevention strategies Describe the differences in risk, presentation, diagnosis, and treatment for women with atrial fibrillation Describe the trends, treatments, and intervention strategies of cardiovascular disease in women Cite emerging data in support of specific medical recommendations and surgical procedures in management of heart disease Utilize emerging novel approaches and strategies to treating heart, vascular, and valve conditions Understand the utilization of surgical techniques in the treatment of heart disease in women
