3 directoripgt@ayurveduniversity.com Institute for Post Graduate Teaching & Research in Ayurveda In 1954 Govt. of India had started a premier research center for Ayurveda named as "Central Institute for Research in Indigenous System of Medicine (CIRISM)" at Jamnagar in the great building named 'Dhanvantari Mandir', which was built for housing the Ayurvedic Institutions. On 0th July, 1956 a Post Graduate Training Centre in Ayurveda (PGTCA) was also started in Jamnagar. These two institutions were amalgamated in 1963 and renamed as Institute of Post Graduate Teaching and Research (IPGT&RA). After establishment of on 5th January 1967, IPGT & RA became an integral part of university. This institute offers Post Graduate and PhD levels study in Ayurveda, Ayurvedic Pharmacy and Medicinal Plants. It is fully financed by Govt. of India and administered by university as per the Act 1965 and as per amendment made in 003. The work force developed by this institute forms the backbone of Ayurvedic Teaching, Research and Administration in India. In 1977, this Institute has been recognized as collaborative center of WHO for Ayurveda. Students from Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives, and Mauritius are studying in P.G. & Ph.D. courses. This institute has been honored by Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India, as number one institution of its kind in its internal rating and now it is also recognized as Collaborative Centre for Traditional Medicines in India by WHO.

4 Mission of the Institute To serve as custodian of classical Ayurvedic knowledge, endeavor to fine tune the available knowledge of classical Ayurveda to meet the global health care requirements by incorporating advances made in basic sciences. To serve as the centre of learning in all aspects of Ayurveda. To prepare highly skilled and competent resource persons for teaching and research in Ayurveda and to fulfill the global health care demand as well. Ultimate goal is to propagate Ayurveda throughout the world. Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Considering the growing popularity of Ayurveda, has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with many National / International Institutions with the intention to propagate Ayurveda globally. 6 Unique Achievements of the Institute Since inception, this institute has been engaged in teaching as well as research activities and has been attained unique achievements. Few of them are as follows: It is the premier Post Graduate and Research Centre of India for Ayurveda. The first Ayurvedic Institution to start short term regular Ayruvedic courses for Foreigners. The first and the only PG centre in Ayurveda having independent Pharmacology Laboratory and Animal House. First to start M.Pharm (Ayu.) & M.Sc. (Medicinal Plants) Courses. Ph.D. in Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Sciences and Ayurvedic Medicinal Plant Sciences. Department of Basic Principles: This department imparts knowledge of Basic Principles in Ayurvedic classics, history of Ayurveda along with Sharira Rachana and Sharira Kriya (Anatomical & Physiological aspects human body) and promotes researches in Ayurvedic fundamental principles like Panchamahabhuta, Tridosha and their applied aspects. Department of Dravyaguna: This department deals with the studies on identification, properties, cultivation and preservation etc. of different herbal resources and conducts trials to assess the pharmacological properties of the herbs. The department has developed a good herbarium having over 1000 drugs. Department of Rasa Shastra & Bhaishajya Kalpana: This department imparts knowledge on different aspects of drug development, information on drugs from metals, minerals, poisonous, marine, aquatic, animal resources and their utilization in diseased conditions etc. The department endeavors to revalidate and standardize different classical pharmaceutical procedures mentioned in the text. Department of Roga Nidana Evam Vikriti Vijnana: This department teaches and conducts studies in the subjects of Ayurvedic clinical diagnosis. Department provides basic medical services to the hospital and conducts

8 Department of Kayachikitsa: This department teaches general medicine, Rasayana and Vajikarana; provides basic medical services to the hospital and conducts research on various diseases like paralysis, sciatica, backache, joint disorders, bronchial asthma, acid peptic disorders, eczema, psoriasis, diabetes mellitus, colitis, dysentery etc. Department of Panchakarma: This department teaches and conducts studies in the subjects of Panchakarma and Manasa Roga and provides basic medical services to the hospital and conducts research on various aspects of the diseases. More than 0 clinical trials on the affectivity and standardization of various Panchakarma procedures have been conducted and various types of Basti, Vamana, Virechana, Snehana, Nasya etc. procedures and their role in the management of chronic disorders have been studied Department of Shalya Tantra: This department imparts training and teaching in classical surgical procedures and provides clinical consultation, surgical and para-surgical services to patients attending IPD and OPD sections of the hospital. The department is delivering Ksharasutra treatment (Potential Cauterizing Application), an unique classical promising therapeutic measure for ano-rectal diseases like Arsha (haemorrhoids), Bhagandara (fistula-in-ano) and Parikartika (fissure-in-ano) etc. The department also manages three more para- surgical units viz. Unit of Agnikarma, Unit of Raktamokshana and Unit of Asthi Sandhi and Marmaabhighata Chikitsa (Orthopaedic). Different conditions of Sciatica, Frozen Shoulder, Brachial Neuralgia, Osteoarthritis, Varicosity, Fractures, Dislocations, and Sprains etc. are managed in these units. Department of Shalakya Tantra: The Shalakya specialty, deals with the diseases of supra clavicular parts of the body, which includes ENT, Ophthalmology and dentistry. Significant studies have been carried out in the field of tinnitus, migraine, chronic rhinitis, dental cavities, dry eye syndrome, pyorrhea etc. Besides, the role of different Netra Kriya Kalpa (Specialized treatment procedures for eye) in various eye disorders like myopia, refractive errors etc. are also being carried out by this department.

9 Department of Kaumarabhritya: This department deals with different aspects of pediatric problems and provides extensive services to the diseased children and looks into the maternal welfare. The department also conducts awareness camps in schools at regular intervals with special focus to check the growth and developmental disorders and carried out routine health status in children with special emphasis on diseases like worm infestation, anaemia and mental retardation etc. Department also has separate wings for immunization and Panchakarma procedures. Department of Stree Roga and Prasooti Tantra: This department teaches about Ayurvedic gynaecology and obstetrics. Department is carrying out significant research in the management of antenatal and postnatal care, common gynecological problems and diseases of children etc. Beside this, the department also runs special clinics for infertility and para-menopausal syndrome. Laboratories Pharmacology Laboratory: There is a full-fledged well equipped laboratory with qualified staffed. An animal house attached to this laboratory, fully meets the rats and mice requirement of the research work. At present the main areas of research are adaptogenic, immuno-modulation, hepato-protective, spermatogenesis enhancement and aphrodisiac activities evaluation of single and compound Ayurvedic preparations. Studies are also carrying out for evaluating anti-arthritic, anti-inflammatory, anti-cataract, psycho-neuropharmacological, hypo-lipidaemic, anti - ulcer and anti-diabetic activities etc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry Laboratory: This Laboratory is engaged in manifold activities like teaching and practical training, analysis of samples received from Pharmacy Department of this university for evaluating their standards, planning an execution of independent research projects, consultancy in the field of drug research; acquisition and dissemination of information in the area of medicinal plants are the other activities of the laboratory. Pharamacognosy laboratory: This laboratory is well equipped and having highly qualified and well experienced staff. It has facility for carrying out teaching and research on various aspects of Pharmacognosy of medicinal plants. The department has surveyed and collected Ayurvedic medicinal plants from different states of India including Gujarat, Rajasthan, UP, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

10 Pathology laboratory: Institute has a well-equipped pathology laboratory, which carries out the routine haematological and pathological investigations to support the diagnosis and researches. Laboratory is supported by qualified technical staff to carry out these tests. They also teach modern methodology of research to P.G. students. Emphasis is also laid on independent pathological and bacteriological research. Biochemistry Laboratory: This laboratory has facilities to carry out the routine biochemical tests pertaining to blood. This laboratory is supported by the qualified technical staff. Research is being carried out on enzymological aspects with regard to Ayurvedic drug composition. Microbiology Laboratory: With sanction of Govt. of India; a new research laboratory for microbiological investigation has been set up to help the research activities. 12 Hospitals & Patient Care Facilities Hospital of this institute with more than 180 bed indoor capacities provides treatment to indoor & outdoor patients. This hospital has nearly 70% bed occupancy. Nearly 18 specialties OPDs per day are being conducted daily and more than 800 patients attend daily OPDs. Free medicine and checkup facilities are provided to these patients. All the medicines provided to the patients are being manufactured by the pharmacy of Gujarat Ayurved University. The hospital also assists in research and clinical training of the scholars. Investigations like Computerized Radiography, Ultra Sonography facilities are available. Hospital has the support of well qualified physicians and is equipped with different specialized wings, operation theatre and maternity room, provides specialized treatments like Panchakarma, Trigarbha Kutir, Ksharasutra and Kriya Kalpa for the treatment for various diseases. This hospital has got fame among the patients of chronic and incurable diseases for successful management. Special research is being conducted on cerebral palsy and mental retardation in children and facilitates their treatment with an attached play house. RUDRA Software: The institute initiated clinical documentation programme by using RUDRA (Random Uninterrupted Documentation for Retrospective Analysis) with an intention to provide clinical evidence, in turn which gives credibility to the system. In the first phase, it has been implemented at IPD levels and soon OPDs also will be equipped with this system.

The teachers of IPGT & RA render their services at these Centers; Institute provides transportation and medicine facilities free of cost. This is the first time that Ayurvedic clinics are being conducted at all the three Defense wings.

14 Medical Camps in House in Rural Institute is regularly organizing medical camps rural areas for the benefit of public and also organizes speciality camps inside the hospital Facility Satellite O.P.D. s Medical camps organized Health survey of school's children WHO Collaborating Centre for Traditional Medicines (Ayurveda) Considering all the achievements of IPGT & RA in the field of Ayurveda, World Health Organization (WHO) has designated it as Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicines (Ayurveda), which are the only such Centers for Ayurveda throughout the world. During the period of designation; the institute is attempting to develop Ayurveda Health Promotion Guidelines, Standard Ayurveda Treatment Protocols for Lifestyle Disorders and Organized Orientation Training Programmes for Foreign and National Medical Professionals and to develop strategic measures to strengthen pharmacovigilance programme. Programmes & Activities - At a Glance With an objective of propagating Ayurveda at national and international levels, the institute has taken-up different activities ranging from literature survey, publications and organizing different ventures etc. 'WHO' Sponsored Activities: Pharmacovigilance for ASU Drugs: Department of AYUSH recognized the Institute as National Pharmacovigilance Resource Centre for Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani Drugs (NPRC - ASU) in India. The objective of this programme is to develop awareness regarding possible adverse drug reactions to ASU drugs. A three tier system involving One National, Eight Regional and Thirty Peripheral Pharmacovigilance Centers has been developed for proper compliance of the objectives. The national centre (NPRC) organizes CMEs at its Regional / Peripheral Centers frequently, so that the developments can be disseminated to the community. 15 WHO APW project to develop Clinical research methodology for Ayurveda has been prepared and submitted to WHO WHO APW Project on 'Standardization of Ayurvedic Clinical Terminology' The Institute has been identified by WHO country office of India as the nodal centre for developing research guidelines for Ayurvedic studies. Manual on simple Ayurvedic herbal formulations for common ailments has been prepared under APW scheme of WHO Country Office of India. International Catalogue of Ayurvedic Publications: has been prepared and published under APW scheme of WHO Country Office of India. More than 4700 titles of the Ayurvedic books published all over the world have been added in this catalogue. (Available on web site Projects Developed by the Institute for Dissemination of Knowledge: Digitization of Ayurvedic Manuscripts: The library of the University has a treasure of more than 8000 rare manuscripts of different subjects. Considering the importance of saving this traditional inheritance, an attempt is being made by IPGT & RA to digitize them. 16 Ayurgenomics Project: To identify genomic correlates with Prakriti in Healthy individuals of Gujarat, collaborated with CSIR and project on Ayurgenomics has been developed. This will be helpful in objective assessment of Prakriti Phenotypes in West Indian population of Gujarat. Training Programs and Extension Activities: Institute is continuously organizing various academic extension activities like CME, RoTP, OTP etc under the sponsorship of Dept. of AYUSH. Recently Govt. of India has asked to organize training programs for trainers. Institute is also organizing seminar / symposia / workshops on different subjects. 17 Hostels, Guest House Institute manages three hostels viz. Boys, Girls and International Scholars Hostels. Boy's hostel has 110 single bedded rooms and girl's hostel has 75 rooms. International Scholar's Hostel has 35 rooms for foreigners with facilities of air-conditioning and attached with a small pantry and other relevant basic requirements. Married PG / PhD scholars are being provided accommodation in vacant residential quarters. A guest house, which holds 35 rooms of different categories [VIP, AC, Non AC] is located in the campus is being maintained by the institute, which accommodates visiting guests. University Facilities for the Institute Medicinal Plants Garden University Campus has five flourished botanical gardens occupying an area of nearly 10 acres of land. These gardens have more than 150 medicinal plant species grown for teaching and training of students. Another big garden of nearly 35 acres has been located about 5 km away from the main campus and has more than 100 varieties of medicinal plants. Ayurvedic Pharmacy has an Ayurvedic pharmacy, which manufactures drugs as per classical formulations for the use of University Hospitals. On the basis of the experiences of physicians and researches done at, an Ayurvedic medical Kit of 30 drugs has been prepared, which contains formulations for the management of common ailments like cold, cough, fever, vomiting and diarrhea etc.

18 International Centre for Ayurvedic Studies (ICAS) Being a WHO collaborative centre for Ayurveda, the university has become a center of attraction for foreigners. The centre started a three month introductory course in Ayurveda in Since then students from the countries like Australia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Japan, Korea, Mauritius, Mexico, Nepal, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, USA, UK, Portugal, Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, Maldives, Germany, Bangladesh, Iran, South Africa, Latvia, Russia, Italy, Slovenia and Canada etc. have came to this University to attend various courses. Since 1998, the University has broadened its objectives and set a goal to popularize Ayurveda globally. Many new courses have been designed exclusively for foreign nationals. To coordinate all these activities and to provide exclusive information to foreign nationals, an International Centre for Ayurvedic Studies (ICAS) has been established in This center coordinates the admission of foreign nationals in various short-term and long-term courses and provides technical and administrative support to them. Till date 81 scholars in long term and 109 scholars in short term courses have been trained in Ayurveda. Central Library The central library of the University has a collection of more than 30,000 books on various subjects. This Library caters the needs of the students and also supplies books to the various departmental libraries. In addition to this, the library has a huge collection (about 7644) of rare hand written manuscripts, out of which around 500 belongs to Ayurvedic Science. Digitization: The institute initiated the process of digitization of rare manuscripts available in the library with an intention to enhance access, spread awareness and encourage their utilization for educational and research purposes. These digital formats of manuscripts are being launched on the website of university. IT Centre: Institute has a fifteen portal IT room with broadband facility for the use of the students and staff which with an intention to encourage to develop the skills of communication by using the computers, update the knowledge and collect information pertaining to their research projects etc.
