I am Mary, the owner and author of Where I blog about the things I am most passionate about living a simple & natural living, healthy eating, homesteading, organization, faith and family life. 4 4 INTRODUCTION The concept of using herbal medicine is nothing new. In fact, it has been in use since before recorded history. The first recorded herbal study was written around 2000 BC by a Chinese Emperor named Shen Nong. Herbal usage spans the globe and it s estimated by the World Health Organization that eighty percent of people use it in one form or another. This is because herbal medicine works!

5 WHY ADD HERBS TO THE HOMESTEAD? First off, I am all about natural remedies and searching for preventatives rather than being reactionary especially when it comes to our health or that of our animals. I do believe that certain situations do call for a veterinarian's guidance and I am not opposed to treating animals with certain medicines when absolutely needed. So, why not try to prevent illnesses before they ever start? I truly do believe that natural living and homesteading go hand in hand. Note: I am not a medical professional, I am only sharing what I have learned through my homesteading experience and research.

6 First off, I am all about natural remedies and searching for preventatives rather than being reactionary, especially when it comes to our health or that of our animals. I do believe certain situations do call for a veterinarian's guidance and I am not opposed to treating animals with medicines when absolutely needed. Herbs are easy and inexpensive to grow and provide several different health benefits. They are equally beneficial to our health as well as for the health of our livestock. I find herbs valuable in building strong immune systems. Personal testimony: I began to research natural living while pregnant with my first child several years ago and began to truly appreciate the benefits of medicinal plants. Herbs can be used in so many areas around the homestead and I m always looking for ways to incorporate them into our natural lifestyle.

7 BENEFITS OF COMMON HERBS In this section, I m going to share the benefits of common herbs, their uses on the homestead. These herbs hold similar effects on both humans and livestock. In the section that follows, I will share recipes for you to include these herbs around your home. On our homestead, we use a variety of herbs including: Mint, Calendula, Plantain, Bee Balm, Lavender, Oregano, Basil and Garlic.

8 MINT

9 BENEFITS & USES Mint is a great multi-purpose herb. Use as a rodent and fly repellant and it aids in odor control. Mint makes a treat to your chickens during the hotter months; add Mint leaves to the water or create ice blocks with Mint for a little fun. Additional benefits: aids in respiratory health and digestive aid of chickens. Uses: add in and around the chicken coop, nesting boxes, runs and around the home.

10 CALENDULA

11 BENEFITS & USES Antiseptic and antimicrobial properties help heal wounds, cuts, scrapes, insect bites. Helps relieve and soothe eczema, psoriasis and other skin problems when applied topically. Increases blood circulation. Highly aromatic. Uses: great addition to nesting boxes and homemade salves, soaps and balms.

12 LAVENDER

13 BENEFITS & USES Antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties which also aid in minor burns and bug bites. Helps digestive issues, stress reliever, and headache soother. Increases blood circulation. Calming effect. Highly aromatic. Use in the coop, nesting boxes, homemade salves, balms and soaps.

14 GARLIC

15 BENEFITS & USES Natural pesticide and insecticide. Immune system builder. Anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic, anti-fungal. Laying stimulant for chickens and natural wormer for animals. Controls odor in the chicken coop and barn. Great overall healthy herb for livestock. Use in feed, water and treats.

16 OREGANO

17 BENEFITS & USES Beneficial herb to include in livestock feed. Strengthens immune system. Anti-fungal, anti-parasitic and antibiotic properties. Combats salmonella, e-coli, avian flu, infectious bronchitis. Helps strengthen respiratory health.

18 PLANTAIN

19 BENEFITS & USES Plantain is often considered a weed, but did you know that they contain many great skin healing benefits? Soothes insect bites and stings. Helps aid in healing of rashes, and other skin irritations. Contains high levels of minerals: calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and sodium. Also contains trace levels of zinc, copper and selenium. Great for goats & cattle!

20 ADDITIONAL HERBS & BENEFITS Parsley is a laying stimulant and is high in protein; also freshens animal s breath when fresh. Bee Balm and Thyme help aid respiratory health. Marjoram and Parsley are egg laying stimulants. Sage, Cilantro and Tarragon are good for overall health. Red Raspberry leaf is a good pregnancy booster for goats. Echinacea is a great source to help boost animal immunity. Dried Nettle Leaf can be added to chicken and duck feed to increase niacin. Dandelion is a great source of calcium and an antioxidant. And it grows almost everywhere!

21 HERBS & LIVESTOCK USES This section contains many of the ways that you can use herbs for your homestead livestock.

22 DOSAGE FOR LIVESTOCK Many times, when you find an herbal remedy, dosage information is just a suggestion. In my opinion, it is best to start with the smallest recommended dose and build from there until you achieve desired results. I feel that a few leaves of fresh herbs added to nesting boxes and feed bowls per animal is a good starting place. I use about a small handful of mixed herbs for several chickens and for our goats. For human dosage, start with 9-15 grams of dried herbs per day and can be increased up to 25 grams until desired results are achieved. I believe that a good guideline for dogs is the same as human dosage. Goats & sheep are 1-2 times the dose of what you d give to a human and horses are 5-15 times the dosage of humans. Again, always start with the smallest amount and build it up.

23 HERBS IN LIVESTOCK FEED I suggest using herbs in the feed by: Add Garlic and any combination of: Oregano, Parsley, Bee Balm, Thyme, Marjoram, Cilantro, Sage, Tarragon, Dandelion and their greens to livestock feed. Just add a couple of fresh dandelion leaves to your livestock feed or you can follow the previous dosage guide depending on how many animals you are Cut up Garlic cloves and leave for grazing food of choice.

24 HERBS IN LIVESTOCK WATER Give your chickens fun treats during the summer months by freezing Mint in to ice cubes and adding it to their water. Cut up or smash up Garlic cloves and add it to livestock water and change out every couple of days. Brew up a tea of dried Mint, Dandelion, Oregano and Parsley and add it to your livestock s water bowls. Make chicken treat blocks for the winter months. (See page 35)

25 HERBS IN THE BARN Hang herbs in the coop and barn for a refreshing scent. Now if you ve been a keeper of goats for a long time, you know they will eat almost anything. So, I d recommend hanging out of their reach unless your intention is to let the goats graze the herbs. You can also spread herbs around the floor of the coop for your chickens to enjoy at their leisure. To help keep insects and rodents out, try creating an herbal spray. (See page 34) A couple of other herbs which are great additions around the home and barn are Citronella and Lemongrass. They help keep mosquitos, flies and other insects away.

26 HERBS IN NESTING BOXES/DUST BATHS Adding in herbs to your chicken s nesting boxes and dust baths are a great way to prevent disease and parasite infections. Also, helps aid in preventing mites and lice by adding to dust baths or creating a spray (see recipe section). Spread a few leaves of fresh herbs around the nesting boxes and dust baths and refresh when needed. Lavender provides a nice aromatic scent and is calming for chickens. Mint is great at keeping rodents and some insects away.

27 HERBAL RECIPES This section contains many great beneficial herbal recipes that we use and love around our homestead.

28 HOW TO DRY HERBS There are several different methods you can use to dehydrate herbs. Cut herbs after dew has dried from them. Tie them into a bundle with twine or a rubber band. Hang them upside down for several days until completely dry. Herbs can also be dried on a screen, such as an old window screen or a hanging herb drying rack. You can dry herbs in the oven at your lowest temperature setting. Lay herbs on a baking sheet and set on the lowest position in the oven. Rotate pan and flip herbs periodically. Once they are crispy, remove from oven. Use a dehydrator. Lay herbs on dehydrator trays and check on them periodically. Remove once herbs are crispy. Note: the amount of time needed using an oven or dehydrator will vary depending on the number of herbs and size you will be drying. It s important to check on them periodically to prevent burning the herbs.

29 HOW TO CREATE A TINCTURE 1. Add herbs to mason jar, filling about ¾ full. Note: if using fresh herbs, chop finely first. 2. Fill jar with alcohol of choice (see below for guide), be sure to cover herbs completely. 3. Store tincture in cool dark location for 6-8 weeks; give a gentle shake every couple of days. 4. Strain herbs from liquid using a cheesecloth and a sieve. 5. Tincture will last several years is kept in cool dark storage. Alcohol guide: proof vodka is good for most dried herbs and fresh herbs that are lower in moisture, ½ 80 proof vodka and ½ 190 proof grain alcohol is good for herbs that are higher in moisture. It s also good for berries and roots.

30 DIGESTIVE AID TINCTURE Ingredients: 1/2 cup dried Mint leaves ¼ cup dried Calendula flowers ¼ sliced fresh Ginger root Instructions: 1. Add herbs to mason jar and add alcohol. 2. See previous page for remaining instructions. 3 tablespoons of Fennel seed. Great for nausea, heartburn, indigestion and other digestive issues. To use: adults - up to 1 teaspoon of tincture taken straight or mixed in water as needed for digestive issues. Children-10 drops is usually sufficient. For morning sickness, ½ a dose is helpful. Always consult with your medical professional before using herbal remedies.

31 METHODS FOR HERB INFUSED OILS There are two basic methods for infusing your herbs in oils. 1. The traditional method add your dried herbs to a clean mason jar. Pour enough oil to cover the herbs by at least one inch and leave about an inch room at the top of your jar to allow for your herbs to expand. Place lid on top and give it a gentle shake. Place the jar in a cool, dark place for 4-6 weeks. After that time, strain your herbs with a cheesecloth and sieve. Make sure that you squeeze out as much of your oil as you can. Place the oils in jars and store for up to a year. 2. The next method is much faster when you re pressed for time and uses direct heat. Place herbs in a crock pot or top of double boiler and cover with olive oil. Make sure to leave an inch or two of oil above the herbs. Heat low and slow for about 2-5 hours, until the oils start to take the scent of the herbs. Allow to the oil to cool before straining the herbs. Use a cheesecloth and sieve to strain your herbs and store the oil in jars for up to one year.

32 HIPPIE HEALING SALVE This is an amazing multipurpose salve that we use around our homestead. It can be used to help aid in various skin issues including eczema, bug bites and stings, diaper rashes, teat/udder soother for your goats and cattle and so much more!

33 HIPPIE HEALING SALVE To make this salve, create an herbal infused oil (See page 31) with these ingredients: After the herbal infused oil is made, you will use the remaining ingredients to create the salve: 2 tbsp. dried Calendula 2 tbsp. dried Plantain 1 tbsp. dried Lavender 1/2 cup Olive Oil 1/3 cup coconut oil ½ ounce beeswax drops of Lavender essential oil Glass jars or tin containers to collect completed salve.

34 HIPPIE HEALING SALVE INSTRUCTIONS Before you make your salve, take the dried calendula and dried lavender to create an herb infused oil. (See page 31) Then follow the steps below: 1. Set up double boiler and begin boiling water in bottom pan and set to a low simmer. 2. Add in ½ cup of the herb infused oils (calendula, plantain and lavender blend) to the top bowl of your double boiler. 3. Next add in the coconut oil and beeswax. Allow both to melt completely and stir together. 4. Once your oils and beeswax have been melted and mixed together, remove from heat and stir in your Lavender essential oil. 5. Very carefully, pour into your jars or tins. Allow to cool completely before using or putting into storage. 6. Store in a cool, dark place and they should keep for about a year. Note: You can adjust the firmness of the salve by adding more or less beeswax.

35 HERBAL TREAT BLOCKS FOR CHICKENS Ingredients: 1 ½ cups of oil or fat of choice (I like coconut. I know some like to use tallow or lard for this) 1 cup of unsalted sunflower seeds 1 cup of scratch grains or cracked corn ½ cup of raisins Instructions: 1. Melt coconut oil on stove top. 2. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in remaining ingredients. 3. Pour your mixture into molds and allow to cool. I really like silicon cupcake molds for these. They just pop right out when they re cool. 4. These can be stored in your in fridge or freezer. 2-3 tablespoons of dried herbs of choice 2 garlic cloves, diced I will occasionally add in mealworms as a special treat for our chickens. Note: These are a great winter time treat, but are not recommended during warmer months since the coconut oil has a melting point of 76 degrees. You can play with the ingredients and substitute for chicken safe alternatives!

36 HERBAL BARN SPRAY My two favorite options for creating an herbal spray are either Lavender for the intense aromatic scent or Mint for the insect and rodent repelling properties. Other herbs that smell lovely and would make a great spray are Rosemary, Citronella or Lemongrass. 1. Take a few leaves of your choice herb, crush it with your fingers and place in a jar. Add either white vinegar or witch hazel to your jar, making sure to completely cover your herbs. 2. Place jar in a cool, dark location for about 2 weeks; making sure to give a gentle shake every couple of days. 3. Strain out the herbs and pour into a spray bottle. 4. Spray around the home, barn and coop as needed. I like to concentrate on entry ways and base boards.

37 EASY HERBAL SUGAR SCRUB Ingredients: ¼ cup herbal infused oil of choice (I like Lavender or Mint) ¼ coconut oil, melted 1 ½ cups of sugar 2 tbsp. honey drops of essential oils of choice (I usually add Lavender or Mint) you can start with less and add more to your preference. Instructions: 1. Add all ingredients to a mixing bowl. 2. Work it together until thoroughly mixed and evenly combined. 3. It will have the texture of wet sand. 4. Add to an airtight jar. I like using these decorative mason jars. This sugar scrub is awesome to use after a hard day s work in the garden or around the homestead!

38 LOOSE LEAF TEA BLENDS Floral Herbal Tea: Combine 5 tablespoons dried Rose petals, 5 tablespoons dried Chamomile flowers, 3 tablespoons dried Mint leaves, 3 tablespoons dried Lavender buds. Combine all ingredients and store in glass mason jar. To brew: add1 tablespoon of tea mixture to 1 cup of boiling water; let steep in tea strainer for 5 minutes and enjoy. Elderberry Immunity Tea: Combine 5 tablespoons dried Red Raspberry Leaf, 3 tablespoons dried Echinacea. Combine ingredients and store in a glass mason jar. To brew: add1tablespoon of tea mixture to 1 cup of boiling water; let steep in tea strainer for five minutes. Stir in 1 tablespoon of Elderberry syrup (page 39) and 1 tablespoon or raw honey, sprinkle with dash of cinnamon powder. Enjoy. Simple Mint Tea: Add 1 cup of boiling water to 1 tablespoon of dried Mint leaves. Steep in a tea strainer for about 5 minutes and enjoy.

39 ELDERBERRY SYRUP Ingredients: 2 cups of whole Elderberries 6 cups of filtered water 2 inches of fresh Ginger, sliced 2 sticks of cinnamon 1 1/2 cups of raw, local honey Totally optional, but sometimes I ll add a little more organic ground ginger and cinnamon to taste at the end. Instructions: 1. Add Elderberries, ginger, cinnamon sticks and water to a large pot; bring to a boil. Immediately reduce heat to a simmer. Partially cover with a lid and allow to simmer for approximately minutes. Or until the liquid has reduced by half. 2. Strain out the liquid into a large bowl. I usually use a sieve, but you can use a cheesecloth over a strainer. Whatever works best for you. Discard elderberries, ginger and cinnamon sticks. 3. Add honey to your syrup and the ground spices if you re using it. Mix well. 4. Pour into glass mason jars or something similar for storage (glass is best). Store in the fridge. 5. This can be kept for a couple of months, but should be used up within three. 6. Use 1-2 tablespoons several times a day whenever you feel like you need immune support.

40 ADDITIONAL RECIPES Natural Flea Collar - Mix 3 drops of Lavender essential oil to 1 tablespoon of water and spray your pet s collar. Reapply every 5-7 days as needed. Rose Geranium essential oil works to repel ticks. Anti-itch Spray - Following the barn spray recipe (page 36), only replace with Chamomile. Spray topically to your animal s skin to relieve itch. Lavender & Mint Dry Shampoo (for humans) - Combine the following: ½ cup arrowroot powder, ½ cup of cacao powder, ¼ cup baking soda, 1 tablespoon of dried Lavender flower powder, 10 drops each of Lavender and Mint essential oils. To use: sprinkle a little on the crown of the head and massage in. Brush out any access.
