For the past fourteen years she has taught beginning and advanced herb classes in the Midwest based on actual case histories. Lise s primary focus is on the most prolific plants available commonly called weeds, that insistently volunteer their nutrition and healing powers everywhere we walk. In 2010 and 2011 Lise taught at the University of Minnesota Center for Spirituality and Healing as a part of the School of Nursing curriculum for the Doctor of Nursing Practice. 5 Workshops The Art of Case Taking and Communication for Herbalists with Erin Piorier Working well with clients or friends and family is much more than knowing the herbal materia medica. This workshop will cover the elements of a consultation and effective, artful interview skills. We ll discuss everything from the forms and paperwork to how to how to maintain your boundaries as a practitioner. We ll pay particular attention to strategies for effective, directed questioning and eliciting useful information about symptoms, organ systems and history from your client. We will wrap up with an fun exercise analyzing cases taken from Erin s practice. The Cardiovascular System Reveals The Mind-Body Connection and Offers Insight Into Treating Emotions with Anita Teigen The cardiovascular system has a language all its own, and it provides us with insight and understanding into the mind-body connection. Through the pulse we can see if an individual has suffered shock or trauma at some point in their lives, and recognize if there are lasting physical and/or emotional effects. We can also find out if the person experiences anxiety, worry, circular thinking, or insomnia. Through the blood pressure, heart rate and circulation we can determine the basic terrain of the body and gain clues as to how to restore balance. From my point of view, the two greatest gifts that Chinese medicine offers us are a comprehensive diagnostic system, and the primary rule of treatment: "treat the pattern, not the disease." Our western herbal tissue states model, fleshed out by Matthew Wood, is based on similar concepts, but is expressed and applied slightly differently. In this class we will learn about the relationship between these two systems, get a brief introduction to Chinese pulse diagnosis, and find out about blood pressure diagnosis all within the context of understanding and assessing the emotions. In the final portion of the class, we will briefly discuss how to select herbs (western) to treat emotional conditions based on our diagnosis, and how to create an appropriate formula. Note: The concepts of this class may be a little overwhelming to the newer herbalist, however, the handouts and the skills that will be introduced will be practical and helpful to anyone who is or hopes to be prescribing herbs. Flower Essences, Chakras and the Energetic Body with Martin Bulgerin Because flower essences work primarily on psychological and energetic levels instead of simply on the level of the physical body, a different perspective is needed here compared to traditional herbalism. Instead of looking mainly at organ systems and physical symptoms, a language of emotions and subtle energy is needed to supplement the physical. In particular, the human energy systems of the aura and the chakras form a useful backdrop for talking about how remedies work, the healing effects they bring, etc. We will look at a number of essences from this energetic and emotional background, learning how to differentiate between closely related remedies based on this perspective. Herbal Basics: Salves and Plant Identification instructor TBA Herbal Medicine is accessible to everyone! Join us for a walk around the farm and learn to identify some of the many edible and medicinal plants that grow around us. Then learn the simple techniques to turn fresh herbs into oils and ointments. Participants will make their own infused herbal oil. $5 supply fee payable to instructor. Herbs for Winter Health with Lise Wolff Help your body heal winter's woes. Learn a variety of simple remedies and recipes to strengthen your body and work with colds, coughs, sinus infections, fevers and SAD. Let s Go Out Botanizing with Elizabeth Heck On this plant walk we will be looking for patterns in plant s flowers, stems and leaves to help us learn how to identify and group them. Related plants often have similar uses and their patterns can guide us to a broader understanding of plant actions. This class will include a brief introduction/review of basic botany and progress to an exploration of various plant properties. Focus will be on the most common plant families used in herbal medicine. Workshop descriptions continued on page 6 5
6 Workshops continued. Luscious Lotions: Handmade and Herbal with Erin Piorier You can make rich, fragrant handmade herbal products for your skin that aren t greasy or strong smelling from ingredients readily available from the local co-op. These luscious lotions can be for beauty and delight or they can be profoundly healing with the addition of herbal infusions formulated by you from dried herbs, infused oils or tinctures. We ll sample a variety of creams, share recipes and make a batch of cream together. Participants should bring a very small dry, extra clean jar or salve container to this class for their sample. Minnesota Herbs for the Musculo-Skeletal System with Lise Wolff Many local and available plants are incredibly effective remedies for healing and easing the pain of arthritis, sprains, strains, tight muscles, whiplash, bone breaks, repetitive stress injuries and so much more. Come learn what, where and how to use these effective and simple remedies. Plant Identification and Tincture Making This class will cover the ethical gathering and preparation of herbal medicinals. Class will begin with a plant walk, identifying edible and medicinal local plants and gathering material for making a tincture to take home. $5.00 supply fee payable to the instructor. Moving Qi with Essential Oils with Jodi Baglien Let your inner healer come out and play! Tension, beliefs, past trauma are just a few things that block our energy pathways and keep us stuck in old patterns that no longer serve us. We will explore how we can move energy in our energetic pathways (meridians) with essential oils, by exploring the eastern therapeutic concepts of essential oils. Choosing oils from their energetic qualities is a fascinating way to approach oil selection. Class includes making your own energetic essential oil blend and a intention setting meditation to program your blend. $6 supply fee payable to the instructor Plant Identification and Tincture Making Instructor TBA This class will cover the gathering and preparation of herbal medicinals. Ethical wildcrafting techniques will be emphasized as students prepare a tincture to take home for use in their own herbal repertoire. $5.00 supply fee payable to the instructor. 6
