Savithri Aromatic and Medicinal Plants Research Station (Kerala Agricultural University), Odakkali Asamannoor Post , Ernakulam District, Kerala Abstract Recently there has been a growing interest on herbal medicines and a higher demand for ayurvedic crude drugs in Kerala. In India, the Ayurveda system of medicine uses about 700 species of plants, Unani 400, Siddha 500, Emchi (Tibetan) 300 and modern medicine around 30 species. Forests have been the source of many of the medicinal plants, but the destruction and degradation of their natural habitats has resulted in the extinction of many species. Still now a majority of crude drug comes from the wild and only a limited quantity is procured from cultivated sources. In order to assess the variations in the quality of crude drugs in the market, a study on the market variation of four medicinal plants was conducted at AMPRS, Odakkali during The results indicated considerable variability in the quality of market crude drug samples. This is presumed to be due to variation in maturity, soil types and climatic conditions, mistaken identity of original species, admixture of adulterants and allied plants, difference in storage and handling, etc. Hence, for maintaining quality of the final product, it is essential that quality standards are evolved and enforced at raw drugs stage itself. 1. Introduction The present decade shows a resurgence of interest in the use of traditional medicines and plant-derived drugs. This return to nature has occurred mainly due to increased awareness on the undesirable side-effects of modern drugs. Moreover there has been an increased attempt from various agencies to conserve and practise our traditional medicines which are more eco-friendly and immuno-modulatory. Besides, modern medicines are found to be inadequate to treat ailments like diabetes, amoebic dysentery, rheumatoid arthritis and hepatitis. Medicinal plants assume special significance in preventive medical practices especially against aging, obesity, hypertension and depression. Though around 90 species are grown for medicinal purposes, very few are cultivated on commercial scale at present (Chadha and Gupta, 1995; Thomas, 1997). In each plant, a specific part or parts are identified to have medicinal properties and they are collected as 1

2 crude drug for medicinal use. The crude drugs thus collected comprise of whole plant 16%, roots 29%, rhizome 4%, bark 14%, wood 3%, stem 6%, leaves 6%, flowers 10%, fruits 10% and seeds 5%. Their therapeutical property depends on physiologically active chemical compounds produced in the plant as secondary metabolites like glycosides, terpenes, alkaloids, phenolics, steroids, coumarins, saponins, etc (FAO, 1993; UNDP, 1997; Walton and Brown, 1999). The demand of major crude drugs is growing substantially in Kerala. More than 90 % of the crude drug is collected from the wild. Unavailability of sufficient quantities of drug material results in substantial adulterations and substitutions. Preliminary studies have shown that considerable variation exists in the quality of crude drug samples of Alpinia, Curcuma, and Vanaharidra collected form various markets (KAU, 1998). It is hence felt worthwhile to have a detailed investigation on the characters of crude drugs available in the market. 2. Materials and methods The study was conducted at Aromatic and Medicinal Plants Research Station, Odakkali during to ascertain the variation in the quality of crude drugs of three medicinal plants viz. Curculigo orchiodes, Holostemma ada-kodien and Saraca asoca. Curculigo orchioides Gaertn.(Nilappana or black musali) belonging to the family Amaryllidaceae was a common plant in the backyard of every house in Kerala, but it is fast disappearing from the face of our surroundings. It is a small, geophilous herb, the tuberous rootstock of which is used as a rejuvenating and aphrodisiac drug. Holostemma ada-kodien Schult. (Adapathiyan or Jivanti) is a laticiferous twining shrub belonging to the family Asclepiadaceae. The roots are useful in ophthalmopathy, cough, burning sensation etc. Saraca asoca (Roxb.) de Wilde belonging to the family Caesalpiniaceae is a medium sized handsome evergreen tree upto 9 m in height with numerous spreading and drooping glabrous branches. Ashoka, the sacred tree of Hindus and Buddhists, possesses varied medicinal uses. The wellknown ayurvedic preparations are Ashokarishta and Ashokaghrita. Ashokarishta is prescribed in leucorrhoea, haematurea, menorrhagia and other diseases of genitourinary system of females. drugs of the three plant species were collected from the main markets of Kerala and adjoining states. Quality analyses were done using standard procedures (Sadasivan and Manickam, 1992) and the data were critically analysed and the extent of variation studied. 2

3 3. Results and discussion The results of the study on quality variation in market samples of the three plant species are presented below. Curculigo orchioides The data on mineral content of market samples of Curculigo orchioides is presented in Table 1 and that of proximate composition in Table 2. Table 1. The range of values recorded were ash %, crude protein %, fat %, fibre %, Starch %, glucose %, sucrose %, N %, P %. Holostemma ada-kodien Market samples of Holostemma tubers were collected from Muvattupuzha, Ernakulam, Trissur and Kottayam. On these samples percentage of ash, estimation of nitrogen, polysaccharide, crude fibre and NPK analysis were done. The results are presented in Table 3. Table 3. The contents of N and P was high in Ernakulam samples and 4

5 potassium content was high in Trichur sample. Among the quality parameters studied, maximum variation was seen in the content of polysaccharides. Saraca asoca Market samples of asoka bark were collected from Muvattupuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kottayam. Quality estimations such as ash, crude fibre and mineral nutrients (N, P and K) were undertaken. The data are given in table 4. Table 4. The greatest variation was observed with respect to the protein content ( %), Ash content ( %), Polysaccharides ( %) and crude fibre ( %). Nitrogen and potassium contents were highest in Ernakulam sample, while phosphorus was highest in Trichur sample. Saraca being a tree species, the raw drug available in the market vary widely due to variation in age, place of growth including soil and other ecological factors and extent of adulteration in the sample. Raw drugs come from different areas. There would be admixture of adulterants and allied plants, variation in maturity, difference in soil and climatic conditions, difference in storage and handling, etc. The variability in quality may further be due to the fact that nondescript materials are being collected as crude drugs from the wild. These indicate the nonuniformity of the crude drugs available in the market. This calls for evolving standards at raw drugs stage for maintaining quality in the final product. 5. Conclusion An analysis of the quality of crude drug samples of Curculigo orchiodes, Holostemma ada-kodien and Saraca asoca showed that large variations existed among samples in the composition of various parameters studied. More than 90% of crude drugs in the market comes from the wild and they are supplied mainly by unorganised and illiterate drug 5

6 collectors. The variations in the drug can be ecotypic, genotypic and chemotypic besides variations owing to harvesting period, method of drying and storage conditions, mistaken identification of plants and even due to mixing of adulterants and allied plants. If the entire crude drug market in the state is considered, the variation in quality would be enormous. This also implies that the quality of the ayurvedic preparations, the end products, cannot be maintained which may adversely affect the entire health care system in the long run. Commercial cultivation of medicinal plants and imposition of quality control measures would a viable proposition to ensure quality of the crude drug. More over, cultivation of medicinal plants has now become a remunerative enterprise owing to their ever increasing demand in health care programmes, mainly in the industrial production of phytochemicals, traditional medicines and in new drug discovery. Commercial cultivation will put a check on the continued exploitation from wild sources and serve as an effective means to conserve the rare floristic wealth and genetic diversity. 5. References FAO.
