BRING ON THE NEW YEAR Friends of Palmetto has been working hard to be ready for the new year. We hope you ll save the dates that we ve provided below and check often as you never know when something fun will be added to the list. If your still considering your New Year s resolution we ve made a few suggestions below. Look through the 2017 list of events, and attend as a volunteer for Friends of Palmetto Island Get your Dutch Ovens and supplies together and plan to camp and cook with Latanier Cookers! Incorporate the park into your new health program by hiking or trotting the trails, canoeing, biking and more. 3 Volume 7, Issue 1 Palmetto Pal s Paper Page 3 We ve receive approval to host the festival on park property again in 2017 and The Beau Young Band has agreed to play for us. The festival planning has begun, but we could use your help! We re looking for volunteers to serve as chairman and help coordinate a few areas of the event. Advertising Co-chair Entertainment (band hospitality) Logistics/Signage Merchandise sales Ticket Sales Volunteers Photography (take pictures and videos at event) Our first festival committee meeting is scheduled for Mon., January 16 at 6 p.m. in the meeting room at Palmetto Island State Park. Please contact us at if you re interested in helping us make our festival the best so far. Please consider giving us a little of your time! We know that the campground has been sold out for months. Cook off teams and Vendors, don t be discouraged! Friends has blocked sites for registered cook-off teams and vendors. We ll be posting registration information later in January on our web-sites and in February s newsletter. We suggest you check online reservations often for cancellations we ll be releasing unused sites on April 17.

6 Page 6 Palmetto Pal s Paper Volume 7, Issue 1 LATANIER COOKER S D.O.G. CHOW Each month we plan to feature the recipe of a dish cooked at one of Latanier Cooker s Dutch Oven Gatherings. This dish was prepared by Amy Callahan BBQ CORNBREAD 1 lb ground meat or turkey 1 onion, chopped 1 bell pepper, chopped 1 can creamed corn, drained 1 can diced tomatoes, drained 1 box Jiffy cornbread mix 1 egg 1/3 cup milk 1/2 cup BBQ sauce Brown meat. Mix in onion, bell peppers, corn and tomatoes. Cook until veggies are soft. Add BBQ sauce and stir. In a separate bowl, prepare cornbread batter as directed on box and pour over meat mixture. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes or until top is golden brown. 10 Dutch oven = 17 top/ 8 bottom or 12 Dutch oven = 19 top/ 10 bottom.

Thank you for all that you ve done for our organization. Park Hours of Operation: Gates are open 6am-9pm (Sun-Thurs) and 6am-10pm (Fri & Sat). Entrance station is open: 8am-5pm (Sun-Thur) 8am-10pm (Fri & Sat). All park sites close at 10pm on Friday, Saturday and days preceding holidays. Entrance Fees: $2 per person; Free for Seniors (62 and older) and children age 3 and under. Palmetto Island State Park has 96 camp sites, 6 cabins, 4 pavilions, 4 primitive backpack sites, 1 primitive group site and a meeting room to rent. Canoe rentals are $20 per day or $5 per hour. The Splashpad is open April-September, Tuesday Sunday from 8am to 8pm. For more information about the Park, visit call toll free or locally. Call for current Nature Center hours and Interpretive Programs not listed in this issue. Reservations for overnight accommodations at Palmetto Island State Park can be made online or through the Call Center at
