4 Our Chief Formulator Early on in my clinical practice I recognized that each of the world s herbal traditions shared key principles and unique insights for wellness that could benefit my patients. These principles became the foundation for the concept of Planetary Herbology, and later Planetary Herbals. That was more than 40 years ago, long before there was a burgeoning herbal products industry. At that time, Echinacea, North America s most popular immune support herb, had not been widely used since the 1930s, and Ayurveda s ancient and legendary Triphala, as well as the highly regarded adaptogen Ashwagandha were nowhere to be found in the American marketplace. My early introduction to Ayurveda, Chinese, and Native American herbalism opened up a whole new world of understanding health and wellness that was light years beyond the Western orientation that dominated. The primary goal of both Ayurveda and Chinese herbalism is to utilize herbs, not only to address symptoms when needed, but also to create formulas that support the underlying system that allowed the health issue to arise. By strengthening the entire system, a more real and lasting state of health is attained. As I began to integrate the principles of these three key global herbal healthcare traditions into my work with patients I learned what herbal formulas were effective. From there, I developed the concept of Planetary Herbology and a passion to bring clinically derived formulas that embrace the world s herbal wisdom to the Western population. This was the birth of Planetary Herbals. An integral part of the Planetary Herbals vision was to also broaden our impact by bringing the most clinically effective formulas of other herbalists to a wider audience. This approach remains in contrast to many herbal concoctions found on the shelves today. Too often research departments have no experienced clinicians working for them, and the herbal formulas they create are often based on a single herb research study, a popular historical factoid, or sadly, what is most profitable. 64 Excipients At Planetary Herbals we carefully select our commonly used excipients to ensure our products only contain high-quality, vegan excipients known to be safe. Dietary supplements commonly contain inactive ingredients known as excipients. Excipients are used in healthcare products for many reasons, including helping to bind the beneficial ingredients into tablets; minimizing the effects of humidity or light; helping the material flow during encapsulation; keeping the product s active beneficial ingredients stable; and sometimes to improve taste. Whether it is a tablet, capsule, or soft gel, it is likely you ll find one or two necessary excipient ingredients listed under Other Ingredients on the label. As with all ingredients, if a customer has a known allergy or sensitivity, we advise they read the label to make sure it is the right product for them. Acacia Gum (vegetable): Commonly known as Gum Arabic, is a viscous substance exuded from the tropical acacia tree. In its dry form, it is primarily used as a binder in the wet granulation process, but also as a dry blend binder. Agar (vegetable): Agar is a gelatinous material prepared from seaweed and is used as a tablet-binding agent or as a thickening agent in liquids. Colloidal Silicon Dioxide: A naturally occurring form of the mineral silica, colloidal silica is used to improve the flow ability of ingredients for proper compression. Dibasic Calcium Phosphate: A commonly used filler, dibasic calcium phosphate is an inert, naturally occurring mineral. Cellulose or Vegetable Fiber (also known as microcrystalline cellulose): Cellulose is the main constituent of plant tissue and vegetable fibers, purified and broken down into smaller particles. Cellulose is used as a binder, filler, and a disintegrating agent for rapid disintegration of tablets. Cellulose also improves the hardness and compressibility of tablets. Modified Cellulose Gum (vegetable): Another form of cellulose, modified cellulose gum is also used to support tablet disintegration inside the body for improved bioavailability. Fructose: Fructose is a natural sweetener that occurs in a large number of fruits, as well as in honey. Guar Gum (vegetable): Guar gum derived from the seed of the legume plant, Cyamopsis tetragonoloba, is used as a tablet binder, as well as a thickener in liquids. Magnesium Stearate (only vegetable sourced): Stearates are salts or esters of the natural fatty acid stearic acid, which is derived from vegetarian palm oil. In this form, stearic acid is combined with magnesium although it also can be combined with calcium (calcium stearate) or zinc (zinc stearate). Stearates are most commonly used to support the flow of ingredients, helping to eliminate the potential loss of beneficial ingredients during the tableting process. Maltodextrin (vegetable): Derived from corn, maltodextrin is used as a carrier, binder and filling agent. Mannitol (fruit): A naturally occurring sugar-alcohol found in plants. Used as a sweetening agent for chewable tablets, it may also be used in conventional tablets as a binder. Sorbitol and xylitol are also natural sugar alcohols with similar properties. Potassium Sorbate: Potassium sorbate is a white crystalline powder with anti-microbial properties. It is one of the safest and most commonly used excipients. Simethicone: Derived from silicon, the second most abundant element on earth, simethicone is used to support the flow of ingredients during the tableting process. Sorbitol (fruit): Sorbitol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol found in a variety of fruits and is commonly used as a sweetener in chewable tablets, powders, liquids, and most frequently in syrups. Stearic Acid (vegetable): Stearic acid is a naturally occurring saturated fatty acid that is found in many natural plant oils (primarily palm oil), and is commonly used in dietary supplements to support ingredient flow during tableting process. Tragacanth Gum (vegetable): Gum of the thorny southwest Asian shrub, Astragalus gummifer, tragacanth gum is used as a tablet binder. Xylitol (vegetable): A naturally occurring sugar-alcohol, xylitol is found in the fibers of many fruits and vegetables, and can also be extracted from various other plant sources, including fibrous materials like cornhusks and birch.
