2 BYU Hawaii Curriculum Proposal Number [16-07] Section 2 Overview (Support) Summary: We would like to make the following changes to the vocal curriculum, effective Fall Strike MUS Turn MUS 276 into one 2-credit course: MUS 276 English and Italian Diction 3. Sequencing. Here is the new sequence for the upper-division courses: MUS 276 F MUS 277 W MUS 278 S MUS 363 F MUS 364 S MUS 466 W MUS 467 S 4. Please strike MUS 105 as a possibility for the first two semesters of Individual Instruction. Explanation: 1-2. MUS 275 and 276: We offered MUS 275 and 276 separately as block classes this last year, but it makes more sense to have them combined, since Italian diction has more content than English. Combining the courses into one 2-cr. course will give us the flexibility to alter the proportions of these separate elements in the semester timeline. 3. Sequencing: We feel like we have enough students now to allow these courses to carry each year. This should help them graduate in a timely fashion, especially if they have to leave campus for missions, etc., and come back. 4. MUS 105: Please strike MUS 105 as a possibility for the first two semesters of Individual Instruction. None of us knew where this change from previous curriculum came from. 160R should be the only option for the first two semesters at 1 credit hour each. This should make the total credits for Individual Instruction 8 and the total credits for the major Profs. Belap and Glenn both agreed to these changes in the vocal curriculum. There are no known controversies about this proposal. There are no changes in graduation requirements, only an easier path to mapping these courses required for graduation. Teaching load: Melissa Glenn has taught most of the courses that will now be offered annually. She may not be able to help out with Music 103 (Music Fundamentals) as often now, but we can cover that with adjunct faculty. Mike Belnap s load can accommodate teaching Contemporary Vocal Methods (MUS 364) on an annual basis.
