4 The latin word spiritus means breath. In every tradition around the world, breath is directly linked to spirit and to life. Respiratory System Primer The respiratory system is divided into the upper and lower respiratory tracts. The upper respiratory system consists of the organs located above the thorax. This includes: Nose, Pharynx, Larynx, part of the trachea. The lower respiratory system consists of: Bronchial tree and Lungs. Did you know? The average adult takes 20,000 breaths per day By the time you reach the age of 70 it's estimated you've taken 600 million breaths. Approximately, 1500 miles of airways are present in human lungs. If all the alveoli in both lungs were flattened out, they would be almost as big as a tennis court! Mucus is a vital substance made by the air passages. Mucus traps inhaled dirt and bacteria and also moistens the airways.
5 Respiratory System Primer Common Respiratory Health Issues: Allergies An allergy is a specific reaction of your body s immune system to a normally harmless substance. Allergies set in when your immune system misjudges a harmless protein, interpreting it as a threat. 40 million Americans (approx. 1 in 6) have experienced indoor/outdoor allergies (pollen, pet dander, mold, dust mites ) Pollen allergies are mostly caused from plants that don t have showy flowers, such as trees, weeds, and grasses. Symptoms of pollen allergy include runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, congestion of the nose, and red and watery eyes.
6 Respiratory System Primer Common Respiratory Health Issues: Bronchitis Acute bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes, the major airways into the lungs. It may be caused by a variety of bacteria and viruses. Infections Such as influenza and pneumonia Asthma A respiratory condition marked by spasms in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing. It usually results from an allergic reaction or other forms of hypersensitivity.
