Course: Formulas 1 Date: December 2, 2009 Class #: 10 Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang : o Clear Heat toxins o o Disperse stagnation : o Heat in the blood Xi jiao Sheng di Shao yao Mu dan pi Clear Heart heat Nourish yin Disperse stagnation Suitable for people with bleeding tendencies nose, cough, etc. due to heat in the blood. Might also have Shen problems such as delirium, mania. This is because heat disturbs the Heart and the Shen is thus disturbed. You ll probably see a deep red tongue on these clients. Xi jiao is rhinocerous horn which is now illegal due to it s endangered status. We substitute water buffalo horn now but it s much milder and requires grams to do the same job that grams of xi jiao would do. Why disperse stagnation? Bleeding is blood coming out of the body. Blood that leaks inside the body becomes stagnation. This is bad news think clots, masses, etc. This is why you add in mu dan pi. Huang Lian Jie Du Tang : o Clear fire toxin : o Excessive heat in San Jiao Huang lian (chief) Huang qin Huang bai Zhi zi Clear Heart fire (and in Middle Jiao) Clear Lung heat (and Upper Jiao) Clear heat from Lower Jiao Clear heat from San Jiao Page 1 of 6

Huang lian is chief herb. This is a BITTER formula! It s for excessive heat, especially from Heart and also from Stomach. Heart dominates the exterior. If you see skin problems can also be Heart related. When you see skin problems, clear the Heart heat. Pu Ji Xiao Du Yin o Disperse wind o Clear heat toxin o Wind heat toxin in head, face Huang qin Huang lian Niu bang zi Lian qiao Bo he Jiang can Xuan shen Ma bo Ban lan gen Gan cao Jie geng Xuan shen Chen pi Sheng ma Chai hu Clear heat toxin Clear wind heat Clear heat toxin Clear throat Protect yin Move qi Disperse wind heat Look for swelling in the face due to heat toxicity. In the Chinese texts it says big head. Could be due to allergies, infection. Look for red tongue, yellow coat, rapid pulse. This is for a short term acute problem, not long term use. Niu bang zi also helps the throat. One of the things emphasized about this herb in Singles was it s ability to treat sore, red swollen throat. Sheng ma and chai hu should be dosed at small amounts. Page 2 of 6

Dao Chi San Important formula. o Clear Heart heat o Tonify Yin o Leach water o Excessive heat in Heart channel (and SI) Sheng di Mu tong Sheng gan cao Zhu ye (dan zhu ye) and tonify yin to control Heart fire Clear heat from Heart and SI Promote urination Clear heat toxins Harmonize Clear Heart heat Relieve irritability Because Heart is internally/externally related to SI, heat in the Heart channel will pass to the SI. Small Intestines function is to separate the clear from the turbid and pass fluids on in the liquid waste. If there is heat from the Heart the SI will pass the heat on with the liquid wastes and affect the Bladder. Urine could be painful, dark yellow, maybe even bloody. Long Dan Xie Gan Tang Very important and commonly used formula. Very effective for LV/GB heat. o Drain Liver, Gallbladder fire o Clear damp heat in the lower jiao o Upward disturbance of Liver and gallbladder fire o Damp heat pouring down Long dan cao Huang qin Zhi zi Ze xie Mu tong Che qian zi Clears LV/GB fire Drain damp heat Drain fire Clear damp heat Page 3 of 6

Sheng di Dang gui Chai hu Gan cao Tonify yin blood Guide herbs to LV/GB channel Harmonize Long dan cao, huang qin, zhi zi, ze xie, mu tong and che qian zi are all for evils. The remaining herbs are to protect the LV/GB channel and organ. Chai hu should be strong in this formula. One aspect of this formula is the going upward along the liver/gallbladder channel part. Mainly refers to eye and ear problems. Could be dizziness due to lv yang raising, headaches on the jueyin area. Eye is related to the liver might be swollen, red and/or burning eyes. Ear problems would be acute tinnitus type problem as well as discharge from the ear. Might be related to infection, but not necessarily. Remember the Liver also goes around the genital organs this would be the damp heat pouring down aspect. Still red, burning, swollen and discharge, but in the Lower Jiao. Men may have ulcers on the scrotum or penis; women may have yellow discharge with odor/smell due to the damp heat. STDs often manifest this way also. May also manifest as impotence caused by liver/gallbladder damp heat. Impotence can also be due to Kidney/Liver Yin xu and indeed that is more common (click to read all about it), but it can also be damp heat in the lower jiao. Also given for herpes. Don t give this formula long term. Even though there are some warmer herbs in it, overall this formula is too cold and bitter for the stomach. Zuo Jin Wan : o Clear LV fire o Descend rebellious qi o Stop vomiting o LV fire invading ST Huang lian Wu zhu yu Drain fire Balance huang lian Descend the rebellious qi Hypo pain, n/v, bitter taste, belching, epigastric focal distention, yellow coat/red tongue, very rapid pulse. Formula is cold in nature. Page 4 of 6

Xie Bai San o Clear LU heat o Relieve coughing, wheezing o Cough due to LU heat Sang bai pi Di gu pi Zhi gan cao Jing mi Clears LU heat Drain hidden fire Tonify ST Harmonize middle to support LU When LU has heat, qi goes upward/rebels causing cough/wheeze. Red tongue, yellow coating. This formula orginally designed for little kids, so it s not a strong formula. Also has the tonify/harmonize herbs which help the middle jiao to support the upper. Qing Wei San o Clear ST heat o o Accumulated heat in ST Huang lian Sheng di Mu dan pi Dang gui Sheng ma Clear ST heat Tonify blood Disperse heat toxin ST heat = toothache, gums bleeding/swollen gums, bad breath, dry mouth, dry tongue with yellow coating, rapid pulse. Huang lian is the #1 herb for ST heat. Doesn t take much 5g not uncommon. This is heat moving the blood recklessly. Dang gui also balances the formula. Stomach heat can also impair ability to taste. Page 5 of 6

Final next week 1 st part: MC covering whole semester from day 1 to today. Oy. 60 questions or so. 2 nd part: Remainder will be ingredients/indications just like the previous quizzes. Here s what that part covers: Indications (not function) and ingredients Xiao yao san o Jia wei xiao yao san o Hei xiao yao san Tong xie yao fang Ban xia xie xin Bai hu gtang Zhu ye shi gao Huang lian jie du Dao chi san Long dan xie gan Zuo jin wan Xie bai san Qing wei san Indications only Qing ying tang Xi jian di huang Pu yi xiao du Page 6 of 6
