1 THE DEVOLUTION DIFFERENCE Working together to improve health and social care in Greater Manchester.

2 WHAT IS DEVOLUTION? In 2016, Greater Manchester took control of our own health and social care money so that we decide how we spend much of it, rather than the government in London. A year later, Greater Manchester got a Mayor and extra powers to make decisions locally to tackle wider problems that affect people s health and everyday life. Devolution paved the way to start conversations about our Taking Charge health and social care plan and what stops us leading healthier lives. Thousands got involved online, supported by hundreds of face-to-face conversations led by voluntary, community and social enterprise groups with Healthwatch. A better place with healthier, happier people We now get to decide what we spend our 6bn of health and social care money on, helping to make Greater Manchester a better place for everyone, with healthier and happier people. The challenge continues to be big; a lot of people still have poor health. We know it s better to stop people getting ill in the first place and the things that help people are jobs, good housing and connections including family, friends and access to services. Who makes the decisions? Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership made up of the NHS, local authorities, charities, voluntary, community and social enterprise groups, Healthwatch and others now decide how we spend our money. Plans are shaped together using local insight and ongoing local conversations across our region. Why is devolution a good thing? Two years after it happened, devolution is already changing lives in Greater Manchester for the better. Because decisions are now made right here, in Greater Manchester, we can do something about the issues that affect all 2.8 million of us things like helping children have the best start in life, improving our physical and mental health and helping us stay well for as long as possible. Devolution also helps us do things differently. Partners are working together to make sure we have consistent high levels of care across Greater Manchester, making it easier to share information and better ways of doing things. But changes do take time and all of us have a role to play to make positive things happen.

3 Here s just a few of the changes: WE RE CREATING BETTER JOINED UP SERVICES IN THE COMMUNITY Closer working with our partners including voluntary community and social enterprise groups and Healthwatch to: We re fighting cancer with: with lots of different experts working together, to stop people having to go to hospital when they don t need to. DESIGN SERVICES WITH including staff, carers and rarely heard people. INSPIRE AND EMPOWER THROUGH ACTIVITIES and cutting the need for medicines to treat depression, anxiety and loneliness. Supporting people with BETTER ACCESS }TO GPs by extending hours, including telephone advice and online support, and help for people who don t speak English. BETTER ACCESS TO TESTS WITH MOBILE SCREENING for example lung checks in supermarket car parks. MORE CANCER CHAMPIONS affected by cancer supporting each other in communities. HELPING 115,000 SMOKERS QUIT IN THE NEXT THREE YEARS where one in two would have died younger.

4 WE RE TEACHING YOUNG CHILDREN TO BRUSH THEIR TEETH Every 10 minutes a child has lots of teeth taken out in Greater Manchester. THAT S ONE JAM JAR FULL OF CHILDREN S TEETH EVERY 3 HOURS WE RE HELPING YOUNG GET TIMELY MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT including training teachers on mental health and having mentors in schools. WE VE SAVED 200 LIVES SO FAR in our top-rated stroke centres if you have a stroke you will now go to one of these centres. WE RE HELPING HOMELESS TO SEE A GP and get health and care advice. WE RE SPOTTING AND TREATING DEMENTIA QUICKER seven more people a day are diagnosed with dementia, and are getting the help and support they need. Talking to doctors and nurses by video link ENSURING PATIENTS ONLY GO TO HOSPITAL WHEN THEY NEED TO. If people do need to go to hospital, we are HELPING STAFF FROM DIFFERENT SERVICES WORK BETTER TOGETHER to give people a plan around the care needed to get them back home. These are just some of the things that we re already doing across Greater Manchester.
