JULY 2011 ISSUE Mike Warren Leads the Way as Children's Hospital turns 100 Years Old Children s Hospital celebrated its 100 th Anniversary this year with several events to commemorate the occasion. One of the first changes you may have noticed is a tweak to the familiar red ball logo and a change in the name from Children s Health System to Children s of Alabama. Take a look at the new logo. It keeps the familiar red ball design, but the silhouettes of children reflect a more current look. The name change is intended to strengthen the geographic identification of Children s as the hospital s national reputation grows. Children s Hospital President Mike Warren said that as we move into our second century of caring for the children of Alabama, changing the organization s name and logo better reflects the significant role we play in our state and throughout the country - it s a new mark for a new century. Along with these two big changes, you might have noticed another significant change to our website. The Children s website URL is now So many of the addresses you know at Volunteer Services and throughout the health system have changed as well. addresses are now the following: first name.last name@childrensal.org (example: frank.hrabe@childrensal.org). If you re on social media, our media outlets have been rebranded to include facebook.com/childrensofalabama, twitter.com/childrensal and youtube.com/childrensofalabama. 1

In the Spotlight! During June, the Child Life Fair was held in the lobby with a lot of kids having fun with some of our volunteers, clowns, and face painters. Ms. Kimberly from the "Lily Pad" did an outstanding job organizing the fair for the Child Life Department. We had a great time during our O'Charley's Dinner And A Movie event in June. Parents and children joined us in the Bradley to eat a great meal prepared and donated by O'Charley's Restaurant. Michael Savela entertained on the keyboard, providing wonderful relaxing music for the meal. We then we watched the "Secretariat". Thanks to a wonderful group of volunteers that gave a lot to make the first night a huge success. 2

A big thanks to the alumni from Rhodes College for sponsoring Fun Night at the Children's Harbor during June. Our very own volunteer Mary Tinkler is a member of the organization and assisted them in serving up a great night of fun for the parents and kids of the hospital. A great job to all of our volunteers. The Charity League sponsored Fun Night at Children's Harbor during May. Thanks to all members that helped make this event special for the children. They served over 20 pizzas to many kids and parents and called a great game of bingo. We had a special visit from Rob Garner & his mom along with several hospital clowns. Thanks to the Charity League of Birmingham. Since our last news letter, we had a special gift brought to the lobby of the hospital from Rob Garner. It was his birthday and instead of getting presents for himself he donated everything from his birthday party to the kids in Children's during May. He wanted the hospital clowns to give it away on room visits. Thanks Rob for having such a big heart and helping put a smile on a lot of children s faces! 3

Longtime Children s Health System volunteer Glen Rice retires from education with a lot of years under his belt. Glenn started as a volunteer with Children s in 1996 and has over 3,700 hours as a volunteer in the 4 th floor activity room. We hope he stays with Children s as a volunteer for a long time. We know the Mountain Brook School System will definitely miss him. Thanks Glenn! Ms. Vivian getting a hair cut and color from Jelly Bean and Giggles in the Volunteer office free of charge What a GRANNY!" Two special visitors greet Kathleen Did you step on the snake and not tell anyone? Or did you not even see the snake? In the electronic invitation to the 100 th anniversary events, the word snacks was replaced with snakes to see how many people caught this and said something. This is a way to test marketing materials to see if the recipients read the document carefully. Hopefully more people saw it than reported it. If you didn t see it, then you stepped on it! Congratulations to Billie Fay Massey who was the first to report it, and Janie Davis who was second. 4

Be Sun Smart The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to help protect against sunburn and skin cancer. An SPF of 30 screens 97% of UVB rays if applied properly. How much sunscreen do you need? About an ounce will usually provide adequate coverage that s roughly the size of a golf ball!! Skin cancers are increasing amongst young people, especially in women who have the propensity to sunbathe or use tanning beds. However, all of us of every ethnicity and skin type should be sun smart and protect our skin when exposed to the sun. Here are a few tips to reduce skin exposure: Seek shade or stay out of the midday sun between the hours of 10am and 4pm Apply sunscreen minutes BEFORE going outside. Pay particular attention to face, ears, hands, arms Reapply sunscreen every 2 3 hours and after swimming or sweating Wear a wide brim hat and clothing that covers your skin when possible Use sunglasses to protect your eyes Use extra caution near water, snow, and sand which reflect UV rays It is important not to burn and avoid tanning beds While sunscreen provides necessary protection, no sunscreen can shield 100% of the sun s UV rays no matter how high the SPF. Enjoy the outdoors this summer, but be sun smart and protect your skin. 5
