2 Consultation Transitions Barking & Dagenham Progress Project Introduction to Barking and Dagenham Progress Project : B & D Progress Project is a voluntary sector partnership initiated in July 1998 by five local agencies. DABD B & D Crossroads PACT B & D Mencap Society CIIIL The project was established to support disabled children and young people in Barking and Dagenham and any agencies working with them. It attempts to bring together agencies so that resources can be best used and services can be improved. Introduction to the Young People s Development Forum : A key feature of the Progress Project is to involve the young people at every level, which is why the YPD Forum was established. The Forum currently has 17 registered members who meet monthly to discuss different issues that are relevant to their lives. They may be subjects either that the group have identified as important or that we have been commissioned to gain feedback on. The forum is truly inclusive, and finds innovative ways for disabled young people to give their opinions and express themselves. We also aim to be a model of good practice in that the opinions of the young people and their development are paramount and the process is transparent. Introduction to the Transitions Session : The Local Authority has recently contacted the Progress Project to get involved with the design of a new ClickStart wiki site. This is hoped to make the Transition process that bit easier for disabled young people by making their journey more Person-Centred. This approach has already been adopted by the London Borough of Havering, the London Borough of Newham, and the London Borough of Redbridge, with all of the other London 2

3 boroughs soon to follow suit. DABD are also making a ClickStart wiki site, as are Connexions and local colleges. As the young people have also stated how important Transitions are to them, the session was opened up to include some of their updated opinions about the Transition process, as many of their circumstances have now changed since the last time we consulted on this topic. The plan was to have an initial explanation of who Lisa O Dwyer is and open up the subject of Transitions, and then to ask, and gain feedback on the following questions: What tabs can we have on the front page on the website to make this accessible to young people? What would you like information about on the website? Young person s views on the person-centred approach at meetings they go to. Structure of the session : The question posed had to be translated into a session that would be accessible, relevant and enjoyable for all the forum members. To achieve this, part of the session was delivered to the group of young people by Lisa O Dwyer herself, so that she could ask the relevant questions and answer any difficult questions the young people may ask. Following this, the subject of Transitions was built upon during the rest of the Forum session allowing the group members to digest the questions given and answer in their own time. This enabled all members to understand the aim of the session and the topics to be discussed. 3

8 Conclusions : The feedback in this report evidences that once discussions start about unfamiliar topics, the young people are able to think of themselves and others. It proves that when adequate structures are put in place young people whatever their abilities are able to comment on subjects that are relevant to moving on within their lives. In the case of this session those structures involved adequate support staff, and a central person asking all of the questions, small group work and time allowances for the group to answer questions in their own time. Looking at the results as a whole, they followed 3 main themes: ClickStart Wiki Site It was suggested that on the front page there should be no more than 5 or 6 tabs, displaying the most important information that young people would need to know about the Transitions Service including How to Complain as a few of the young people have had bad experiences with the service in the past, and couldn t find a complaints procedure to follow. It is portrayed in the feedback that the young people would like this website to be a one-stop shop, showing information about all aspects of their lives. It is apparent that they would like the site to educate them on things to do with growing up i.e. how to pay for things, how to access Heath Services, and how to buy their first car! It is also shown that the young people would also like this website to be a central portal to LBBD, showing What s on in the Sports community that they can access, and what s going on in and around the borough. Attendees at the meeting The young people have clearly stated that they generally have no choice in who goes to these meetings with them, and that sometimes they may not feel comfortable with who gets to go in with them. They also stated that they may not know all of the people attending the meeting, which can sometimes make them feel uneasy. There is also a general consensus that the young people see the person that talks the most during the meeting, as the most important person at the meeting. This is normally a professional at the meeting, who gives the young person and their family the information they need to make an informed choice about their future. Only a minority of the young people in the group said that they are the most important person in the meeting with the emphasis being on the fact that they are there because they want to learn about what the professional is saying about them. Participation Young people like talking at these meetings, which makes them feel empowered when putting their views across. They affirmed that they feel much happier when everyone is smiling around the table which puts them more at ease, helping to calm their nerves. The young people generally feel able to put across their views and opinions effectively 8

9 in these meetings, especially by talking, although the person who preferred to use pictures and drawings to express himself, felt it hard to put his thoughts across during the meeting. The majority of the young people felt that the meetings they have attended in the past didn t need improving, but they also felt that they themselves could get a lot more involved in the meeting. This included having the confidence and selfesteem to be able to talk more to the other people in the meeting, as well as having the discipline to join in even if they didn t want to or didn t like the people in the meeting. This conclusion will be extremely helpful in planning and improving the current Transitions Service provision, as it is now apparent what disabled young people want from the service as a whole. It was suggested during the session that the young people can be involved at every stage of the ClickStart project, and to help build the website itself. They have expressed an interest to take part in this, as well as being involved in other changes to the current system to make it more user friendly.
