BULLETIN No. 39 1st December 2010 We hope you find this fortnights Bulletin useful. Remember your colleagues can now subscribe to this newsletter by signing up on the homepage of our website As ever, if you need any additional help then please contact News Route Map on course The SDU held a very successful Route Map workshop in London. More than 60 people from all levels of the NHS and other interested businesses took part to help share ideas and discuss what a sustainable health service would be like in the coming decades. This is part of a series of workshops which are working towards the Vision for Sustainable Health: A Route Map which will take place on the 1st Feb The event will lead to a series of steps which will help the NHS become a leading low carbon sustainable organisation. Website Thank you to all those of you who have been visiting our website and making use of the easy to access resources and materials. As you may know we have made the material a lot easier to find so please come and take a look, take part in our poll, ask a question, see the SDU s latest news and visit our RSS feed of relevant sustainability and environmental headlines.

HSJ Awards Sandwell Primary Care Trust has won the Good Corporate Citizenship Award at the annual HSJ awards The prestigious event was attended by around a 1000 guests from across the Health Sector so competition was tough in all the categories. The Good Corporate Citizenship award, with judges including the SDU, the SDC and Sir Muir Gray Director of Clinical Knowledge and Safety at DH, recognises organisations which deliver the core business of the NHS in a way that contributes to the sustainability of the communities and places that it serves. Highly commended in this category - the University Hospital of North Staffordshire The other finalists were: NHS Birmingham East and North NHS Knowsley Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Hospitals FT South West SHA Stockport NHS FT University College London Hospitals NHS FT Health and Social Care Awards At the recent Health and Social Care Awards Workington Community Services (NHS Cumbria) scooped the top Sustainable Health Award. The special award was in an overarching category which looked at the economic, social and environmental sustainability of all 18 finalists taking part in the awards ceremony. The judges, including NHS CEO Lead for Sustainable Development Sir Neil McKay and SDU Operational Director Sonia Roschnik, chose three finalists but Workington s health service team showed excellence in innovation and highlighted the organisation s commitment to sustainable development and carbon reduction. The other finalists were: Think Home First Project (Northamptonshire) North East Offender Health Commissioning Unit (NHS County Durham and Darlington). Find out more about the awards at:

BMJ Group Awards 2011 The BMJ Group Awards are asking for nominations for their 2011 awards. They are specifically asking for entrants from sustainable healthcare organisations. This award recognises a healthcare organisation that has gone beyond its core business to show outstanding and effective commitment to sustainable health care. Entries close on 4th January 2011 More information at: Consultations The SDU will be responding to the latest consultations on the future of the NHS in due course. Once we ve published our response we will let you know via the Bulletin. We hope you will find them useful when you formulate your own responses to the Department of Health. Our consultations can be found on our website: Climate Courses The Climate Outreach Information Network (COIN) has designed a series of courses to address the challenges facing organisations such as the NHS to meet national policy targets and legislation requirements with regard to climate change. The workshops are interactive, combining formal presentations with group exercises and discussion. The course gives participants the tools and enthusiasm for individual and collective efforts to tackle climate change and draws on the latest research on communications and behaviour change. Contact Marion Beaver on or marion@coinet.org.uk For more information about COIN go to the website:

Poll Results Topic: What level of importance is given to sustainability when my NHS organisation makes a decision? Thanks to those who took part in this fortnight s poll. Your insights into sustainability and the NHS are invaluable so please cast your vote. It only takes one click to complete. This shows that the majority (57% (38% + 19%)) of you who took part in the poll believe that your NHS organisations consider sustainability to a good degree when making decisions. However a significant proportion (43%) disagree. Operational Director of the NHS SDU, Sonia Roschnik says: This poll clearly shows that many Trusts in the NHS understand that making decisions with sustainability in mind is better for their organisation. It saves them money and it saves resources. However, other organisations still have work to do to fully appreciate the financial, social and environmental benefits that sustainability can provide. Due to the holiday season fast approaching we ve decided to leave our next poll question up for longer. We would like you to vote on the following: If you want to persuade NHS colleagues to take sustainability seriously which of the following motivators do you talk about most? Money Carbon Reduction Environment Health Impacts Regulation Reputation

International News Cancun With sub-zero temperatures and the first snow falls of winter, the more sceptical may be having second thoughts about global warming. But it s a hot topic in Cancun, Mexico as the Climate Change talks begin this week. UK Climate Change and Energy Secretary Chris Huhne said: We ve got this next fortnight to get the global climate talks back on track. This means making progress on issues such as financial assistance to help developing countries deal with climate change, tackling deforestation, bringing the promises made in the Copenhagen Accord into the formal UN process, and agreeing a system to make sure countries live up to their commitments to take action on emissions. A new report, compiled by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and launched ahead of the Cancun conference, finds that the pledges made at COP15 in Copenhagen last year will, if fully met, deliver 60% of the emissions reductions required to keep the rise in global temperatures under 2 degrees. The report draws attention to the 5 gigatonne emissions gap between where nations might be in 2020 and where science suggests they should be. If you are interested in further information then please see our RSS news feeds on the left hand side of our home page Regional News NHS Manchester NHS Manchester has written sustainability requirements into its cleanliness and infection control strategy. Along with requiring the most up to date cleaning technology available including new anti-microbial textiles and fabrics, NHS Manchester says that all its cleaning vehicles will be fitted with tracking devices. The location, speed and fuel consumption of each vehicle will be monitored minute by minute. This means they will be able to monitor the carbon footprint of the entire fleet via a carbon emissions report.

We will also demonstrate how sustainability can save your organisation money and improve quality and resilience. The NHS Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) event will be held at the Great Hall at Barts Hospital in London.
