1 VOLUME 1!! ISSUE 7 ALPHA GAMMA SIGMA FC Students present at UCI s Honors Research Conference by Serena Porter What an amazing opportunity it was to be invited to attend the HTCC conference. I was shocked that I got accepted since this was my first time writing a research paper and abstract. I was nervous and excited for the day looming ahead of me. The HTCC conference gives students in the honors program the opportunity to submit their research and present it in front of other honor students and faculty. There is also a chance to win scholarships. There were three different sessions all broken up into groups of three to four people in each session. This allowed for about one hundred participants to present all in the same session. You could choose who to go see speak, and the rooms were small but could easily fit about 30 people. For me this felt like an amazing opportunity to be able to present my research and be a part of a conference. I also got to know some students from Fullerton College outside of my normal arenas. I tried my best to support other FC students in each session, besides my own session, to help give that support to fellow students. The whole day was full of encouragement, and even though I was extremely nervous to go when it was my turn, I feel that the build up was worse then the actual speaking. As Professor Balma stated after I was done, "You survived!" I lived through it and was glad that I did not let the opportunity pass me by. For those of you that will be returning next semester to FC I would encourage you to get into the Honors Program and participate in HTCC. You will not regret it and it will be one more thing that sets you apart from many other students. 2 AGS feeds Homeless, Rediscovers Childhood by Alex Milledge Alpha Gamma Sigma members have partaken in St. Angela Merici s weekly soup kitchen in the past, feeding local homeless families. This time, giving back to the community led AGS members to a trip down memory lane. The event was from 7 am 12 pm with eleven AGS members working in shifts, serving food and beverages to families in need. Seven members from AGS arrived early in the morning to help set up the event along with students from local schools. Tasks included setting up tables and chairs, wrapping utensils and setting up a kid area. AGS members were delegated several other tasks, such as bathroom duty, handing out juices, and playing with kids so their families could rest and enjoy a hot breakfast. Before the soup kitchen opened, AGS members passed the time coloring with the kids, putting together jigsaw puzzles, and playing with some of the toys that the church provides for the children of the local families. Members enjoyed puzzles and played board games such as the Ladybug game with the children, all the while experiencing the energy and joy of their childhood. Books were also among the entertainment for the kids, from titles such as Amelia Bedelia, Franklin, Little Bear, to A Chicano Christmas. As more families with children began to show up, AGS members continued aiding in service as well as entertaining the kids. The event allowed AGS to connect with the community and helped take some time out of a busy, midsemester crunch to serve local families. Wherever there is a need for those to serve juice and play with puzzles, AGS will readily answer that call.

3 TRANSFER CORNER CELEBRATING PEOPLE, CULTURE & THE EARTH What s the the Cadena/Transfer center this month? by Manee Burciaga The Fullerton College Transfer center is sponsoring the Transfer Awareness week starting April 16 through April 20th. The transfer awareness week is an opportunity for students to take advantage of many college workshops and events that will help you understand the transfer process. Workshops and panels such as, Transfer Exploring: CSU v UC. (I found this workshop personally helpful when it came for me to pick a CSU or UC school.) And the UC panel (where you can ask UC representatives questions about the campuses and the different requirements for each.) between workshops and panels the biggest event held that week is the College Fair, where admission representatives from UC, CSU, private and out of state universities answer questions regarding admissions and requirements. The workshops and the fair are open to all Fullerton college students, so swing by and take a look at different universities! Transfer awareness week is not the only major event happening this month at the Cadena/ Transfer center. The Cadena Cultural Center will be hosting on May 3 from 10 am to 2 pm is the Worldfest. The Worldfest, which is formerly known as the Festival of Diversity, will showcase cultures from different lands around the world, including Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Oceania. There will be art, dancing and performances showcasing each culture. The events that are hosted by the Cadena/ Transfer Center are there for us to take advantage of the many services and cultural events they provide for us free of charge. In more of a personal note, I have attended both the college fair and the Festival of Diversity (now known as The Worldfest) and I have had a helpful and wonderful experience. If you need more info about these events and many others please visit the Cadena/Transfer center or stop by between the hours of 8am-7pm M-Thursday and 8am-5pm on Fridays.

4 AGS Scholarships Make sure you apply for our AGS Scholarships! They are available to our members and considered rewards for all your hard work and dedication! Deadline: 5/2/12 Overall Outstanding Scholarship - $600 This scholarship shall be awarded to the applicant who has demonstrated overall dedication to the club, community service and their academics. Requirements: 3) 2 letters of recommendation (professor and professional/volunteer supervisor) Service to the Club Scholarship - $400 This scholarship is given to our most dedicated member (attends the most meetings, most events). 3) One letter of recommendation Community Service Scholarship - $300 This Community Service Scholarship is given to a member who has shown great commitment to community service, regardless if done with the club or outside the club. 3) One letter of recommendation Academics Scholarship - $200 The Academic Scholarship will be given to the member with the strongest academic dedication. 3) One letter of recommendation Who will pick the winners? The AGS Scholarship Committee composed of the President, the two VPs and three continuing AGS Members. Turn in: to our Student Affairs (Rm 223) mailbox or to ags@fullcoll.edu All applicants must be considered Active Members (have completed their community service and club point requirements).

You can earn up to 3 community service hours this way. AGS Cartridges and Cell Phone Fundraiser - Donate your used ink cartridges and cell phones for club points! 2 cartridges = 1 club point & 1 cell phone = 2 club Again, please contact the board if you fear you will not be done with your hours and points by the deadline, we are here to help!

6 Food for Thought The Coffee A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the coffee. Now consider this: Life is the coffee, and the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of Life we live. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee. When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee in most cases, its just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups... and then began eyeing each other's cups.
