What is this document about? In 2013 the CCG in Norfolk reviewed its Wellbeing Service. CCG Clinical Commissioning Group. This is a group of GPs who make decisions about health care in their area. To review to look at how things have gone. It did this because it wants to make a new service in By looking at the one it has now it can try to make the new one better. The Wellbeing Service is for people who have mental health difficulties like depression and anxiety. It helps people to keep doing their jobs. It also helps people to keep doing other activities that they like. The Wellbeing Service is not for people who have very bad mental health difficulties. 3

The CCG wanted to make sure that the Wellbeing Service is working well. It wanted to find out if it is helping people who use the service and their carers. It also wanted to find out if it would be a good idea to let more people use the service. At the moment there are some people with mental health difficulties who are not allowed to use it. It did this by talking to lots of different people: People who use the Wellbeing Service. Carers for people who use the Wellbeing Service. Doctors. Nurses. Other organisations that work with people who have mental health difficulties. We did this consultation from 4 November 2013 to 31 January Consultation asking lots of different people what they think about something. 4

We planned the consultation with people who use the service. We also asked people who do not know about the service to help. We did these things to find out what people think: We made a questionnaire. People could do it online on a computer, on paper, or as an Easy Read questionnaire. 287 people did this questionnaire. We wrote a document about the changes we want to make to the service. This could be read online or on paper. There was also an Easy Read version. We interviewed 61 people who use the Wellbeing Service. We had meetings to talk about what people think. Service users, their carers, and other organisations came to these meetings. We read letters from service users and their carers. We did a survey for 49 people who use other mental health services. They are people who cannot use the Wellbeing Service at the moment. We asked people from the University of East Anglia to put all this information together. They then looked at it to find out what most people think. 5

This document tells you what the University of East Anglia found. It also tells you what the CCG is going to do about this. This is an Easy Read version of the report. If you would like to see the whole report you can find it at If you want a paper copy of the whole report or want to ask any questions please contact: Rebecca Champion NHS North Norfolk CCG Engagement Manager Phone: nnccg.contactus@nhs.net 6

What you told us Not everyone thinks the same things. Some people really like the Wellbeing Service and think that lots of things are very good. Some people said these things are good: The staff. The therapies. The information given. The places and buildings that the Wellbeing Service uses. Some people said these things are not so good: 1. Communication Lots of people said that communication needs to be better. These were the main things people told us about communication: 7

If someone phones the Wellbeing Service and leaves a message, they should be called back. The Wellbeing Service should tell people s GPs what is happening. The Wellbeing Service should work better with other services. People who use the service need to be told what the service is and what it can do. There needs to be better advertising. If people do not know the service is there, they cannot use it to get help. 2. Assessments and therapies over the phone Some people think it is a good idea to use phone calls to do assessments for new service users. They also think it is good that they can get some therapies over the phone. Assessment when someone looks carefully at how you are and what might help you. They do this to make sure you get the help that suits you best. 8

But some people think this is bad. They think that all therapies and assessments should be done with the person next to them, not over the phone. 3. Waiting times Lots of people think they had to wait too long to get help from the Wellbeing Service. Some people said that after the Wellbeing Service had been told they needed help, it did not contact them. 4. Services Some people like group sessions. But more people do not think it is good to have therapies in a group. Lots of people think that 1:1 sessions are really good. They like them face to face and on the phone. People think that there should be more different therapies that they could have. People think that the service should contact them more often when they are waiting for treatment. 9

Lots of people think that their treatment stopped too soon. People think it would be good if there were support groups. These groups would be for people who have used the Wellbeing Service but whose treatment has finished. People think it is a good idea to advertise the service in lots of different places. This includes GP surgeries, therapy centres and community centres. People want to be able to use the service in the evenings and at weekends. We were told that it would be good if people could contact the service themselves if they need help. At the moment another health professional has to do this for them, like their GP. 10

What people who use other mental health services said The questionnaire was sent to some people who use other mental health services. These people were asked to take part because health professionals think the Wellbeing Service would help them. We asked them what they think about services they have used. We also asked them what they would like from a service in the future. What are services like now? The staff are good. Most people find it easy to get help from the service. But there are some people who have found it hard. Waiting times are too long. There is not enough support. Communication is not good. 11

What should services be like in the future? People told us they would like: To get help from the service by speaking to a nurse or doctor. Some would like to get help by speaking to the service themselves. They do not want to have to go through a doctor or nurse. Care that helps them with all parts of their life. And if they are getting care from different places for these places to work together better. Care near their homes and families. Support as well as treatment. What will we do with this information? The new Wellbeing Service will start in April This is when the contract with the old service ends. Before the new service starts the Norfolk CCG has to decide who will provide this service. Organisations who want to do this have to tell the CCG how they would run the new service. 12

There is a group to help the CCG make this choice. The group members are mental health service users and mental health support groups. It is their job to make sure that all the things we have found out in our consultation are shown in the new service. The group members will work with the CCG to ask questions to the organisations that want to run the new service. They will make sure service user views are heard in the new service. The Vision This is what doctors and nurses told us the new service should be like: A service that does its best to help people who want support to feel better mentally. To do this by making talking therapies available to people when they need them. To make sure these therapies are in places each person can get to, at a time that is good for them. 13

Our consultation has shown us that these are the same things that service users and carers want. It has also given us lots of other information to help us plan our new service. What we will do next We will give the report to all the organisations who may want to run the new service. They will also be able to read the full report. They will be asked to write a report about how they want to run the service. They will have to show how they have listened to what service users have said in this report. Service users will then say how good they think these plans are. Who took part in this consultation? Lots of service users and carers helped us with this consultation. These organisations also gave us their views and ideas: Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn 14
